Why does the rest of the World hate Venezuela?

Postby ksslemp on Sun Nov 05, 2006 9:19 pm

Also known as the "Does that Dictator ever change his clothes"? thread The question is directed at the Venezuelan Gov't, NOT the people of Venezuela!!!!! I probably shouldn't have said "Hate", maybe "Dislike Immensely" is more appropriate? This is to all foriegners and Venezuelans who think they know why Venezuela is so hated. Please only post one reason at a time and i will try to answer them all. This is related to the "Does Venezuela need a revolution without a Dictator" topic so post accordingly.

I wasn't aware that Venezuela was hated by anyone other than Bush. Didn't they wholesale fuel oil to the NE during last year's massive snowstorms for bottom-barrel prices (pun not intended)?

I always thought of them as groovy people.

Anyone's better than the ME. I don't like to generalize but the way they've raised oil prices just bugs me.

Incorrect once again, The US is constantly thinking we are better than the UN's laws and feel we have the obligation to step on their toes.

The UN doesnt want outside interferance in a country unless it threatens them. We forsee the need, and therefore, intervene before all hell breaks lose.

No, the U.N. is an irrelevant organization that is bereft with corruption and that passes totally meaningless resolutions. They don't have the will to take any kind of stand on priniciple which might require a use of force. This emboldens renegade nations such as North Korea and Iran since they know they can ignore the U.N. mandates without consequence.

An organization dedicated to preserving the constitution? Yep, real anti-American, you sure got them pegged.

Affirmative Action?

I thought that was a policy, not an organization. My mistake.

UN?

An organization that has delegates from all over the world. Oh, I forgot, America is whole world!

Thank you Jay, you certainly opened my eyes!

An organization dedicated to attacking religious freedom- except Islam of course and tearing apart our constitution? Yep, real anti-American, you sure got them pegged.

Affirmative Action?

I thought that was a policy, not an organization. My mistake. Policy used by organizations...yet another rip in the flag.

UN?

Engel v. Vitale Decision: It is unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official school prayer and require its recitation in public schools, even when it is non-denominational and students may excuse themselves from participation.

Do you know why? Because the government is not allowed to dabble in religion. Even if they celebrate all religions, that still becomes a state religion. It's none of the government's business what private citizens believe in.

Are you saying they should pass laws requiring prayer? What about making church attendance mandatory? If you can do one, you can do the other.

And need I remind you that it's the Supreme Court, not the ACLU, that makes the final call. If you want to blame an organization for the degradation of "religious freedom" then maybe you should argue against the Supreme Court.

Policy used by organizations...yet another rip in the flag.

I'm against affirmative action, but I can respect why it was started. It was actually started to prevent race from becoming an issue before it was gutted and turned into this "You have to hire so many minorities" nonsense. It's not a rip in the flag so much as a rip into common sense:
"We're against racism and using race as a barrier against hiring certain people, so you have to hire this many minorities because that's different than what we're against!"

We actually agree on this point Jay, I believe the apocalypse is at hand.

An organization that is utterly useless and my tax dollars fund.

Your tax dollars fund the UN? I thought each individual member funded the UN through dues. Sure, our (The USA) dues come from tax money, but do you know how many other delegations attend the UN?

190

Yep, our tax dollars fund 1/191 of the UN. What a ripoff! Well, we certainly could funnel that money elsewhere.

Perhaps adding to our defense budget? Let's make it an even $500 billion, 466 is such an ugly number.

Nah, they're still closed.

Well, you certainly aren't helping to open them. At a very young age I was taught to ignore strong points of view that weren't my own in order to see things objectively (or as objectively as a thinking person can see things).

Though we do agree on Affirmative Action, so they're at least partially open.

EDIT: Damned typos, maybe I should be sleeping...

Not 1/191. According to this chart the US gives 25% of all UN contrabutions.

the rest of the world doesn't hate Venezuala. Across much of Latin America Chavez is a popular figure. Here in the UK he has many supporters too.
At the end of the day you must learn to differentiate between a country/nation, its' people, it's leaders and its' political system. Just because you agree/disagree love/hate a political leader is not a valid justification for taking a stance on an entire population.
Personally, I've always gotten on well with every Venezualan I've ever met - but then I've only ever met one. Is this enough to base a viewpoint on an entire population? Obviously not.
So do I love/hate Venezuala? It's a ridiculously irrational question.

Dude, that chart is a little out of date (The only years on it are 1983 and 84). It mentions the USSR for f*ck's sake!

There are 191 member nations and each one has to pay dues, that's how I arrived at my figure just in case you were wondering.
