Duk, you asked for an essay, my man, and I'm not getting college credit for this tournament. =)

Does only one person get credit for answering the trivia?

So, as per Wikipedia, John Deighton, also known as Gassy Jack, was a Vancouver bar owner back in the 1800s. His nickname came from the stories he used to tell, kind of a Vancouver Samuel Clemens. The area around his bar is known as Gastown today. He was the inspiration for a 2007 album by the Evaporators called Gassy Jack and Other Tales.

The music is actually not that bad, and again, these guys are pretty much run-of-the-mill Vancouverites, including an appearance from a member of Alpha Flight.

Dal Richards is a musician and a big-band leader in Vancouver. He's a legend in jazz and swing, and at 92, he still performs and hosts a radio show. Here's one of his performances, courtesy of YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0EDTZFuup0

As a Boner myself, I dig jazz and swing, and I can chill to this man's music all day long. Thanks for the hookup, Duk! (However, I could do without the white dude singing the blues. Please.)

Here's another clip of a 2010 performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pMuZxJL38k&NR=1

Leo Obstbaum was the design director for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He died unexpectedly in August 2009 at the age of 39 (I suspect Dukasaur had a hand in his early demise).

The VAN gets its gas from Deighton, Richards swings the CO(u)VER over Ostbaums Medal to get the metal van covered and you have covered Vancouver.

Well, you didn't pull it off. Still, 20 points is pretty good! You've had a good run there.

Worked 10 hours Monday, 15 on Tuesday, 15 on Wednesday, 10 on Thursday

Now I know it's not exactly the Bataan Death March or anything, but it's tiring in its own way..:-)

Anyway, if it will improve your opinion of me, I woke up after only 3 hours and 45 minutes of sleep and came and finished the job.

As punishment for doubting me, you can go join your Nuclear game now.... :P

Update... in the wee hours of Friday morning, April 29, 2001

Dukasaur wrote:Leaving the St. Lawrence behind, we fly across three time zones to Canada's west coast, and the city of Vancouver. 40 players will arrive, but only 30 will go on to the next city. The rest will go out to the Island and enjoy picking mushrooms in the park!

I PM'd all the map creators to ask their suggested settings for these maps, although only about half answered me. shakeycat* was one of those, and her suggestions for this map are Escalating Automatic Foggy Terminator, with not less than four players and preferably more. Consequently each player will play in:

One 4-player Automatic Escalating Chained Foggy Terminator game
Two 8-player Automatic Escalating Chained Foggy Terminator games

All three Terminator games score 1 point for each kill, 1 extra point for winning the game, 2 extra points for being the last non-winner terminated, and 1 extra point for being the 2nd last non-winner terminated.
And for balance we go to the other extreme from shakeycat's suggestions:
One 1v1 Manual Nuclear Adjacent Sunny Standard game, 3 points to the winner.
5 points awarded for the "colour and flavour" bonus. (Superseded... see C&F updates here.
Maximum possible: 28 points

*Note: for those who haven't noticed, not only is shakeycat one of the mapmakers who sent me suggested settings for her map, but she is also the only one who accepted my invitation to come and play on it. Thank you one more time, shakey, for honouring us with your presence! The rest of you say "thanks for a great map!" to shakey when you meet her in your games.

All Phase Two games have been created and invitations sent out.

One final reminder: very few people thus far have attempted the C&F task. Theoretically the deadline has passed, but we have been very lax with this concept of deadline, so if you get your submission in soon it will in all likelihood still be accepted. I would strongly urge everyone to take a shot at it, particularly those who came in close to the bottom of the pack and are in danger of elimination!

It stands as an unchallenged icon for the future of journalism! I'm told the NFB is planning a documentary using your essay as a basic outline for the script.

Perhaps this is a bit late to bring up, but why does the last non-winner get 2 points, and the winner also gets 2 points (1 for the win and 1 for the final kill).

Well, if you go back to Montreal, the standard games were scored as follows:
Dukasaur wrote:Each of the standard games scored by ranking: 6 points to the winner, 5 points to the 2nd place finisher, etc., all the way down to zero points for the first person eliminated.

My first thought was to score the Terminator games by kills only, but then I thought, "no, they're somewhat different but not entirely different from Standard games." So, that system is meant to be a bit of a bridge to the way the Standard games were scored. Not a true compromise, but a segue perhaps.

I realize it's a segue, but player 2 scores the same as player 1. In Escalators, it's most likely that the final kill is not player 1's only kill, but the last player eliminated shouldn't get such a large bonus. It is probably too late to change it now, but for future that scoring system has a slight flaw.

It's like saying (in a standard game): the winner gets 10 points and the second place player gets 10 points. Then 3, 4, 5, 6 get 9,8, 7, 6. While I agree that 2nd should get more than 3rd, I don't think it should get the same as 1st.

Well, it is possible for player 2 to score the same as player 1, if player 2 is his only kill, but that only happens once in a while. In most cases, the winner will have several kills.

Nonetheless, you're right. It is a flaw. Rather than reducing player 2s bonus, I think if I did this again I would increase the bonus for winning. I won't change it in this tourney (I've done enough tinkering with the C&F points; I don't want to start tinkering with the game points too.) but it's definitely something to keep in mind for future tournaments.
