Jim's Tourney Series #9: Elements Battle [abandoned]

Postby jimfinn on Wed Jun 08, 2011 7:48 pm

So I came up with a new idea: How about a series of 64 tournaments, of varying format and on varying boards, each with a theme? The winner of each gets to participate in the GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP, a NCAA basketball style tournament, with predetermined settings for each matchup! Win more than one, find yourself on multiple bracket lines and more chances to win it all. The winner of tournament 1 will get first pick of the 64 slots, tournament 2 second pick, and so on. Some tournaments will have teams, some singles. Some have Fog related settings, some Spoils settings, some on certain boards, some on any board.

Info about the Grand Finale and about the Series is available here: viewtopic.php?f=89&t=140939

This tournament will begin around June 20th, depending on the number of players signed up. I reserve the right to start it sooner if the number of players is getting higher than I think this can handle. Signup in thread with a mark attached to your name (one of the twelve words in all caps below). All games are auto/sequential. Spoils/reinforcements/fog vary and are listed in the three capital letters after the map name.

Elements Battle
This tournament is based on the card game Elements. For more information, see elementsthegame.com Each player begins with 100/100 HP. Some basic terminology is defined below (feel free to read or skip to the heading Tourney info)
Brief Definitions
Heal ā€“ Increase your current HP, but not to a value higher than your current max.
Grow ā€“ Increase your current and max HP.
Poison Counter ā€“ after every game, you take one damage per poison counter on you, even if you win.
Vengeance Counter ā€“ if you are defeated, deal one damage per vengeance counter you currently hold to your opponent, and lose one vengeance counter.
Mark ā€“ Increases the likelihood that a specific element will be chosen. Each player may only have one mark, but it may be double, tripled, quadrupled etc.

In this tournament, each player begins with 100 current and 100 max HP. In each round, you will play against one opponent on one of the 12 elemental maps. If you win, you get to choose from the effects that are available within that element. When you sign up, choose a ā€œmarkā€ of one of the 12 elements. The more living players wearing a specific mark, the more likely that element will be played in any given round, though any of the 12 can still appear. Every 5th round will be a "rainbow" round in which the individual head to head matches do not have to be on the same element, but are each chosen independently.

The 12 elements and their effect choices are listed below

ENTROPY - Madness, NCF

Dissipation Shield ā€“ the next three negative effects used against you take only 50% of their original power.
Purple Dragon ā€“ Deal 10 damage to your defeated opponent.
Chaos Seed ā€“ An effect from all possible effects in all elements is randomly chosen.

DEATH - Halloween Hollows, ECF

Arsenic ā€“ Deal 2 direct damage and one poison counter. If your opponent loses any of their next three matches, they gain an additional poison counter for each defeat.
Poison ā€“ Give your opponent 2 poison counters.
Bone Dragon ā€“ Deal 10 direct Damage
Flesh Spider ā€“ Deal 3 damage, and gain protection from dragons for 3 battles.

GRAVITY - Space, OAS

Graviton Fire Eater ā€“ deal 2 damage for every Fire mark on a living player to your defeated opponent.
Colossal Dragon ā€“ Deal 7 direct damage
Black Hole ā€“ Destroy the mark of up to 3 players you have defeated.

EARTH - World 2.1, ECS

Stone Dragon ā€“ Deal 8 direct damage
Stone Skin ā€“ Grow by 5 times the number of Earth marks on living players.
Gnome Rider ā€“ Increase your mark by one of the type you are already wearing, or switch your mark.
Earthquake ā€“ Gain 3 vengeance counters; this effect can be doubled or tripled if your mark is doubled or tripled but you may not gain more than 9 in a single battle using this effect.

LIFE - Woodboro, ECS

This seems interesting but confusing. For example, are you only eliminated if you reach 0 HP. Doesn't that mean that we could theoretically reach Round 50 if people were to use non-damage effects. Also what does it mean in Black Hole when it says destroy your opponent's mark. Does that mean that you pick another mark, you are out, or you have no effects when you win?

Yes it could go a long time if people do not damage, but for example fire only has damage dealing effects. You choose an effect from the mark you just won on the map of, not of the mark you carry. Also poison, vengeance, etc. should help the tournament speed up. Note also that each element has a dragon, which can usually put a pretty serious hurt on a defeated opponent.

If you have no mark, you are still alive and can use effects, but your mark does not make your element of choice appear more frequently (nor do you count towards those effects which require specific numbers of marks to be used). You can gain a new mark from any of the choose a new mark options.
