New update! V-3

I'm hoping I could get a few gameplay comments. even though there aren't any territory names, this should help a bit.

Stuff done:
Added all the borders.
Changed the colors of the bonus icons.

Stuff left to do:
too much to list....

Territory count:
115 winter territories (the cold ones)
28 territories in the starting village.
20 bonus territories.
which means a grand total of 163 territories :D

*note*
the yellow marks show where the rest of the bonuses belong. I haven't had time to create all of them, but the yellow shows where they will eventually go.

------------ v ORIGINAL POST v ---------------

Ok guys, if you remember how Oasis started out with the random graphics previews, this map will be starting out about the same way. Just so I can get a better idea of what you guys think about graphics, gameplay, etc.

Here are the basics of what the map will finally become:
---Its snow-themed. set up basically reverse of Oasis.
---Players start in the middle, in a big village. no set starting positions. Random deployment across the entire village.
---Everything else starts neutral.
---bonuses surrounding the villages, scattered around like they were on Oasis. Big bonuses are farther away than small ones, to provide lots of gameplay challenges. Travel far into the snow (that has a -1 decay on it) to collect bonuses.
---To make the bonuses easy to understand, there will be colored markers on the map for each bonus. For example, a red mark might represent a 1 army bonus. Orange might represent 2 armies, etc.
---All snow territories have a -1 decay on them. bonuses and territories with houses on them have no decay.
---Traditional gameplay. Just eliminate all of your opponents to win.

And same as Oasis, this map comes with a story. Its simple, but at least its something. I think it'll need some changes, though.
In the dark of winter, a small quiet village has erupted into violence.
With food and fuel running low, the villagers are getting more desperate,
looking for a way to survive. The fighting won't end on its own; your only
choice is to eliminate all of your opponents in order to return to peace.

I'm hoping the graphics can eventually be a step up from Oasis. Or at least equal to it. I have learned a lot from developing Oasis, and I hope I can manage to avoid most of the problems I had last time.

I like the general idea...but I'd like it even more if you made it in a similar theme to Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush. The Tramp (Charlie) travels to Alaska to take part in the Klondike Gold Rush. The "Big Bonuses" you speak of, could be the Goldmines, and lugging back your gold to the village through the snow is both tiresome and dangerous (thieves), and thus perhaps fitting for the decay. Though I know you like fictional lands, I'd love to see something similar to the Historic idea. :)

Sorry Andy, I'm too much a fan of fantasy maps to do anything historical.
I'll probably include a gold mine or two in the map, though. That is a good idea to use as a big bonus.

Well even if it isn't historical, if it is marginally similar...I'd be happy. :) Especially if there was a Charlie Chaplin or Tramp reference. ;)

I'll throw in some mines in the top left corner.
Gold, Silver, and Iron, most likely.
I might change the story a bit to say that you need to collect food and resources to support your family in the fight. I don't want references to Chaplin or Tramp, though. I want this to fit the same fantasy setup that Oasis has.

Anyone else have comments on gameplay?
I'd like to keep this as a purely fictional setting, unless the rest of you guys agree with Andy and want something different.

In other news, I've thrown together a quick sig banner to get more attention to this thread.
Nothing new in the image. its straight from that preview I showed you.

What if someone played a 1vs1 game, and they started next to each other, what is stopping whoever goes first in a seq game to just eliminate his opponent and win the game in mere seconds?

If there is something I have not read which means this cannot happen then sorry

It will be done like Oasis, where there are lots of territories to start on. So in a 2 player game, each person would have 8 territories to start. which would be near impossible to eliminate on the first go.

I'm going to try and pack 24 territories into the village where people start. so then even in an 8 player game, each player would start with 3 territories.

An alternative name I though of: Tundra.
Not sure if it's what you're going for, but maybe...

I don't remember my geography well enough. do tundras have snow on them? If they do, then that would be a good name.

This is what I think of when I think of tundra, and I'm pretty sure it's accurate. At least far north in the winter.
It seems like this would fit your map, the only problem might be the lack of precipitation. According to wikipedia, tundra (arctic tundra, as opposed to alpine tundra) climates are usually almost desert-like. Most of the ice you see is a layer of permafrost. Your snow decay thing could nevertheless work though, as it's still bloody cold :P
So I dunno. Up to you of course. But I like it :)

There's a part of me that's giddy at the thought of having our first map with the potential for cannibalism, while another part of me thinks we're better off staying clear of that topic entirely.

Too late, I mentioned it.

sounds like it would work. I'm going to wait for a few other people to comment on it, though.
I think I prefer the name Glacier. Tundra to me just sounds cold and grey and empty. at least thats what I think of. I'll wait for a few more comments, and I just made a sig that calls it Glacier. I wouldn't mind waiting a day or two before I change it...

that looks pretty good man, can't wait to see the whole thing

maybe you could name it... blizzard or something like that, because isn't a glacier just a giant piece of ice floating in the water?

Giant piece of ice yes. But icebergs are in the water. Glaciers are on land.

glacier wrote:an extended mass of ice formed from snow falling and accumulating over the years and moving very slowly, either descending from high mountains, as in valley glaciers, or moving outward from centers of accumulation, as in continental glaciers.

iceberg wrote:a large floating mass of ice, detached from a glacier and carried out to sea.

tundra wrote:one of the vast, nearly level, treeless plains of the arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America.

I think I'm most leaning towards glacier still. Tundra sounds too grey and boring and iceberg wouldn't work for this kind of map.

lol. didn't read that one.
blizzard is a good suggestion. better than tundra, at least.

Only problem is that the sky is clear on the map. blizzard usually means that its hard to see because there is so much snow blowing around.

apart from that little issue, it could be a good name.
