Welcome Comrades to the 75th edition of the Dispatch
This is our Diamond or Platinum Jubilee Issue, depending on whose rules you apply!
Apparantly Victor's escape from the hippo's basement was short-lived. The hippo's henchmen recaptured Victor within days and so far we have not been able to discover his new place of internment. We did receive a coded message, something about Father Guido Sarducci and Linda. Our best cryptographers are on the case; we should have further updates as the weeks roll on.
On a more serious note,
Viceroy63 has decided to part ways with us. I would like to thank Viceroy for the work he did here. Although he wasn't with us for a long time, his work output during that time was enormous. The first Executive of the newly-launched Strategy section, he faced the daunting task of creating something where there had previously been nothing. Viceroy wrote articles both in quantity and of quality, and he will certainly be missed.
DoomYoshi now steps up to the plate and will attempt to keep the Strategy section rolling along. Please join me in wishing DoomYoshi the best of luck in this task!
In this issue, we feature the Interrogation of Safariguy5, and an issue chock-full of other articles. Down in the Platoon report,
QuickSilver again produces our only bilingual column. Every now and then I have a look at it and challenge myself by trying to read the French version. In Cartography,
Koontz1973 proves his dedication to CC by interupting his vacation and posting an article anyway. The OSS features Viceroy63's last article. In War Games, DaveH continues his demonstration of how to almost completely automate the running of a tournament.
In CC news, Whac-a-Mod is almost done, with only a handful of games still in progress. For those who are impatient to see an (interim) score, check out:

The big eye-opener for forum watchers is
Mr Changsha 's thread in GD,
Why CC's Membership is (actually) Declining . For those of us who have long struggled with finding an explanation for CC's decline, this is, I think, the most plausible and coherent theory put forward thus far, and deserves some consideration.

The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News After a very tense LYLO scenario in Beach Mafia, Town managed to lynch the last scum. Well played game on all sides, which featured 2 mafia factions.Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements. Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 An interesting role is discussed this time. The Tree Stump What is It? The Tree Stump is a role that will lose all abilities and voting powers except the ability to vote. This is different from a lynch because a player who is Stumped does not end the day. The player can only post in the game. Usually a Tree Stump occurs either when a player breaks some condition or when a player declares himself a Stump or is forced to by an impending lynch.Example Bob is a Tree Stump. To avoid a lynch, he Stumps himself. His character is removed from the game but he can still post and provide input. How to Play this Role Tree Stumps are almost always Town roles. Depending on the player and the ability the character had before the stump, stumping oneself may allow the player to continue to help town without voting. A good player can still offer advice and perspective on future cases.
show: Interrogation of safariguy5
Q. Dear safari, why does the newsletter only interview their department's mods lately? Well we decided to interview the newsletter execs to promote our new Strategy Section. Also, it's been on our to do list for awhile. Q. Do you think that Pirlo or agentcom would make good interviews? They probably would. If anyone has any good suggestions for interview candidates, please PM me. Of course, the person has to accept the interview for it to actually happen. Q. If you were a Pokemon, what Pokemon would you be? Definitely Squirtle. Specifically this one: Q. If you were a Teletubbie, which Teletubbie would you be? None of them, I would be the baby in the sun. Teletubbies live and die, but the sun is forever. Q. If you were a Muppet, which Muppet would you be? Animal. It must be great to not give a flying f*ck what other people think of you. Q. Are you a man or are you a Muppet? Depends if someone has their arm jammed up my butt. I'd hope I would be a man most of the time though. Q. If you are a man, would you consider yourself a Muppet of a man? If you are a Muppet, would you consider yourself a really manly Muppet? Probably not a muppet of a man. To the best of my knowledge, my skin color is way too ordinary to be a muppet. It's hard to get more manly than wearing leather vests and a spiked collar if I was a muppet. Q. If you could eliminate the existance of one thing (large or small) in the world, not just destroy it but completely edit reality so that one thing didn't exist and had never existed, what would it be? I'm going to avoid the popular answer of Hitler and go with mosquitoes. They serve no beneficial role to man and they constantly annoy the heck out of me. When I go to a tropical environment with my family, for some reason, I always get bit the most. It's like I have ambrosia running through my veins or something. Q. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest - how much do you cringe when Sully a) asks you a questions? b) mods a mafia game? c) plays in a mafia game? d) gets a power role in a mafia? e) gets the godfather role in a mafia game? a) Depends what kind of question. If it's a math question, I mutter silently under my breath. Probably a 6. 4 for any other type of question. b) 8. For some reason, Sully made these really weird roles in one game and made me the rolecop. I had no idea what any of the things meant so I was basically useless the entire game. If you're going to make unique roles Sully, being a rolecop is very unhelpful. c) 3. Not too bad, because worst comes to worse, always suggest lynching Sully on Day 1. That means I get to live at least one more day. d) 4. Also partially dependent on which power role he gets. I'd hope he'd make a semi competent doctor but I would absolutely cringe if he got vig. He'd probably kill more townies than mafia over the course of the game. e) 1. Nonissue, as Sully will usually make some scummy statement and get himself killed. Easy for town to deal with it. Q. What's the story behind your username? My dad works for Apple, so I've been raised on Mac's my entire life. The safari is a nod the the Apple Internet program Safari. Guy is there because plain Safari is taken in AIM (the original reason to get a username). And the 5 is a holdover from my very first username on the Lego Forums. Nostalgia and whatnot. Q. What do you enjoy most about writing for the newsletter? I really enjoy interviewing people. There are some people with very funny wit and humor on CC and I often laugh at their responses to some ridiculous questions. I do think that BPB members tend to have very funny responses, as well as some of the more humor inclined posters. Q. Do you still enjoy playing games on this site? If the answer is "yes" would you also say you're hard to bore? (I'm doing a bit of research into the matter) In all seriousness, I probably derive more pleasure from playing Mafia games than playing CC games at this point. But to answer the question, I think that I definitely do derive pleasure from playing games on this site. I used to worry about rank and dice and a bunch of other things, but after awhile, I realized that those things are secondary to just enjoying the game. Dice will sometimes hurt, sometimes help, and rank and points are not as important as some people think they are. Just take a laid back approach to the game and you'll never be bored. In that same vein, I would definitely agree that I'm pretty hard to bore. I will listen to just about any music except country and I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to judging movies. Some good action will make up for a lot of flaws in a movie, so if a movie entertains me, I'll probably consider it ok. Q. If you could be the best in the world at any martial art, which one would pick? Kung Fu because of my Chinese heritage and the fact that it's one of the disciplines that doesn't emphasize throws. Those can really mess up your back over time, and I'd like to be able to practice my martial art when I'm older. Q. (pocket mole) or (mole vole)? I'm a sucker for those cute little whiskers on the pocket mole. I also really enjoyed "The Wind in the Willows" when I was a kid so pocket mole on the way. Q. Pocket trumpet or full size? Pocket for sure. My brother plays the trombone and has dabbled in the trumpet. For the sake of my ears, I'm going to go with the option of less noise. Q. Pocket billiards or on the table? Definitely the full size table. I want to get one when I'm older and have the space, it's a great way to knock back a few brews with some friends. Q. Pocket pistol or pocket rocket? Gonna have to go with the pocket rockets. I enjoy to play poker, and a pocket pistol isn't very accurate at distance anyways. Who knows how far that cheating bastard of a dealer has gotten to by the time you get your pistol out? Q. In someone's pocket or pick pocket? If the pocket belongs to Eva Mendes, then absolutely. The things I would let her do to me... Q. Hole in your pocket or full pockets? Full. Hopefully with lots of money. Q. (Pocket motorbike) or (pocket beagle)? I love dogs. I'll go with the beagle. I want to adopt one from a shelter when I get a house and settle down. Landlords tend to get pretty touchy about pets in my area unfortunately. Q. Pocket knife or sabre? I'll take the sabre. Never bring a knife to a sword fight! Q. Pocket watch or watch the clock? Nothing says "Sophistication" better than a pocket knife, top hat, monocle, cane, and silk handkerchief. GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR! Q. Hands in your pocket or hands-on? Hands on. Especially if it's on a hot girl. Or Eva Mendes. Q. Pocket on your sleeve or heart on your sleeve? Pocket on my sleeve. Being emotional can sometimes land you in trouble/cause you to make bad decisions. Q. Pocket money or pocket fluff? I'll take the money thanks. Q. (read) or (watch)? I used to read comics when I was a kid. I read the No Man's Land arc for Batman, the Dark Phoenix Saga for X-Men, and a bit of the alternate histories for various comics. I'm not a fan of all the meddling the writers have done recently in a lot of the storylines. Peter no longer married to Mary Jane, Captain America dying and then coming back, Ditto with Batman, mutants getting depowered...I suppose after all this time, it's tough to come up with new ideas, but that's what reboots are for. Don't mess with the canon please comic writers. Q. Tell us something interesting about the area where you live. Berkeley is probably one of the few places in the world where "professional protester" is an actual job. If there's a cause, I guarantee people will protest for it. I once walked down one of the main streets and saw about 15 people in full furry costumes protesting. I think it was something about animal cruelty, but I have no idea why the costumes were necessary. Personally, I think they would have been better off trying to get yiffing legalized, but that's just me. Reason doesn't always mix with reality around here. Q. f you've got an unexpected afternoon off and you don't feel like being indoors, where do you go and what do you do? If I was able to, I'd grab a surfboard and hit some waves. I'm pretty sure I was a surfer in a past life, because although I picked up surfing late, it didn't take me very long to learn it and I absolutely love doing it. There's something peaceful and calming being out there in the water and riding a wave is one of the most relaxing and fun things I can think of. Q. Do you personally recommend any sort of College-monogrammed beverage container with a special ability to keep a beer cold? Why yes. If you beat me at Fantasy Football (as Nam did), I will send you a double lined mug with the UC Berkeley logo on it. Stick it in your freezer and you'll always have a cold mug. Q. Is there ANYTHING you don't know about Fantasy Football? I can't forecast injuries sadly enough. I love fantasy sports (Football, Basketball, and Baseball) and my college roommate freshman year got me into it. I remember I drafted in 2007, and I took Tom Brady in the Second Round and Randy Moss in the Fourth Round. That was the year they both set single season records in TD's and I won that league going away. I've been hooked ever since. Q. Last, but not least, do you like cookies? Yes. Especially if they're "magic" cookies. Q. Does the Pope shit in the woods? Yes, and his shit can speak 4 languages fluently. Q. And if the Pope shits in the woods, and there's no one around, can you still smell it? Depends on how much Mozzarella he had on his morning omelet. Q. Safariguy5, what happened to the other 4 safari guys? I defeated them in a vicious knife fight in a Los Angeles back alley. There can only be one! Q. What's your favorite beverage of choice? Favorite mixed drink? Favorite draft beer? I love Jager Bombs. White Russians and Screwdrivers tend to be my cocktails of choice. Pyramid makes some of the best beers I've ever had. And they're based in Berkeley. Q. How many times have you woken up in an unfamiliar room, stripped naked, with a supermodel sleeping beside you, and have no idea what country you're in? Twice. Both Hangover movies were partially based on parties I've been to. Q. What would be your dream birthday bash? Probably rent out a nightclub and just having high priced alcohol flowing all night. Always wanted to see what it's like to live like a celebrity. Q. Birkenstocks or Tevas? Tevas. I've had the same pair for like 10 years. They're very durable shoes. Q. Is it true that you scored a 3150 on the SAT? Nope, just a 2340. Damn you Writing section! Q. How many countries have you visited? Canada, Mexico, Uruguay, Taiwan, Japan, England, France, Switzerland, Italy. I still haven't been to Spain and Australia. Q. How entertaining is the Entertainment staff? Quite entertaining. You should see the shenanigans we get up to on Two Keg Tuesdays. Although we need some more estrogen since squishy left. Q. Who's your dream quads team? Master Fenrir , danryan , L M S , and myself. If I didn't include myself, probably Deli as the fourth. All solid players whom I've had the pleasure of playing with.Q. What are your favorite team and solo settings? For team settings, escalating, sunny, chained tends to be the way to go. Solo is a bit more no spoils, foggy, chained. Q. Favorite map? San Francisco. Not a pretty map, but it's cool to be able to identify all of the regions on a map. Q. If you had a week and an unlimited budget, what would be your dream vacation? I'd like to go take a nice vacation in Hawaii. Sun, surf and seafood all day every day. Q. Why does the FOED forum smell like a guy's locker room? Is it me (macbone), saf? Do my feet smell that bad? Or is it the fish I warmed up in the microwave? It's the fish, isn't it? Probably all the goats Duke has sacrificed to the dice gods. He really needs to clean up the altar when he's done. Q. What's the thing you like most about hosting mafia games? I enjoy reading the posts the players make because I know which theories are right and which ones are wrong. Sometimes (and I know it's a bit morbid) I really like the long arguments two people can get into when both of them are wrong. On the flip side, I like it when someone eventually suggests a correct explanation for a night scene or recent actions because it tells me that I haven't made my scenes too difficult to decipher. Q. What did you spend your $50 Amazon gift card from CC Cup 2 on? (and don't say Asian hookers, Master Fenrir will call you out in a second, he knows they aren't that cheap!) Sadly, I spent 30 bucks ordering a textbook I needed for a class. The other 20 I haven't used yet, but maybe I'll find something fun to make up for the "responsible" purchase I made. Q. IF you were wandering through the woods in your new sandals and you stepped in a pile of Pope shit, what resources from the woods would you use to "clean up"? The hide of a wolverine. Friend to all living creatures I am. Q. As awesome as Cali can be, why haven't you visited Wyoming? Are you afraid of the Mailmen that work there? Since I'm not quite out of school yet, I haven't been able to swing up to Wyoming. Once I get a job and save some money, I'll try to take some vacations to see some CC friends of mine (assuming they'll have me, I know some people prefer to remain anonymous). But the real truth is that Dick Cheney scares me. After he got his ventricular assist device, the man literally has no pulse. Give him 20 years and zombie Dick Cheney with a 12 gauge will terrorize the lands. Q. Finally, what is your middle name? (I already know this answer, so be creative) Crazy Ivan of course. Named after the sub maneuver in Hunt for the Red October. Given to me by a Russian girl I once dated who was quite impressed by my "flexibility". The truth is that my middle name is Winston. Named after Churchill who I am also a fan of. Q. Who is your daddy and what does he do? P-Will is my daddy and he has a double major in kicking ass and taking names.Q. Can You say immediately how much is 234*345? Yes. My head Asplode. Q. Can you play 5 minute games here? Since I'm premium, yes. This also seems like the appropriate time to say that I'm looking for freestyle writers, so PM me if you're interested in writing for the newsletter. Q. Why FOED? Good friends, good drink, good fun. Q. Why Entertainment? The first mod team willing to give me a shot. Q. Why do you keep drinking all my (macbone) beer and never once, ONCE, offer to buy me any? Damn it, I knew the mailman was drinking the six packs I keep airmailing over. Q. Why do all those nice ladies in Wan Chai always ask me (macbone) if I like what I see? You either gotta work out more or work out less. Not sure at this point. Q. Why do they accept Amazon gift certificates now? King A held a gun to their head, and Lack assured them that either their brains or their signature was going to be on the agreement. Q. Which part of "no" don't you understand? The "o". I kept wondering why you were saying there weren't any 0's left. Q. crazymilkshake5 wrote: If you were a pokemon, what pokemon would you be?
If you were a repeat question, what repeat question would you be? A/S/L Q. wolfpack0530. favorite teammate, or greatest teammate ever? Favorite. Never a dull game chat with wolfie in tow. Q. Does it annoy you that so many white guys are into asian women, and does it annoy you that they like me (wolfpack0530) in return? I'll never understand it. Why do Asian women like ugly white guys? Q. 2v1 attacks: what situations do you use them, if ever? If I really need a card, or for the elimination. Q. As a long time member, which now inactive player do you miss the most? I miss Hops. He always had these crazy tournament ideas that would take ages to finish. I think the 1 year tournament length rule was created mainly because of him. Q. How many n'sync songs are on your phone or ipod right now? None, I'm a Backstreet Boys type. VIDEO Q. If given one million dollars, exactly how much of it would you immediately spend on various drugs? hookers? gambling? supin up your honda civic? As the great Bender said, "I'm gonna have my own party. With Blackjack! And Hookers! In fact, screw the Blackjack! Q. What is the biggest scum tell you tend to make when playing Mafia? Usually when I vote a scummy person . Trying to get the scouting report eh IB? Q. What do you think could be done to generate more interest in Mafia? The honest answer probably is that we offer more premium prizes and medals. That's the currency to motivate new players. However, I don't think this is realistic and may attract the wrong types of players to mafia. Q. Is America in decline? I would say that economically, we probably are. With the rise of the global economy and increasing industrialization, the American workforce is being squeezed for foreign labor and innovation. However, America is still a very important diplomatic and political force in the worldwide community. Q. To lynch or not to lynch Sully? Discuss in a 2 page essay. Citations and references required. The answer is always to lynch. The only question is when. Q. Kill/Pull/Marry - MNDuke, tdans and wolfpack. Discuss. No pictures. (Please) Kill tdans on the off chance he's a terminator. Pull Duke so he stops having bad dice, and marry wolfy to give the asian males a better shot at asian women. I'm always willing to take one for the team. Q. If you would be a FOED leader, why would you kick Hippie in the face, seal of the clan and start a nuclear program for kil... peaceful purposes? I definitely need to be made ruler of something. These warheads aimed at the server farm are just for self defense purposes.

Viceroy63 Ex. Strategy Executive and Reporter Classic Secrets: The North America Problem by Viceroy63 show
[The Following article pertains to a Standard Setting Game on the Classic Map.]Classic Secrets: The North America Problem by Viceroy63 Recently a question arose that I thought would make for a very nice article. The question was..."Can you explain SoC philosophy regarding North America. Many times I have posted a game and had the Teacher suggest that I change those plans deploying troops in NA and there always seems to be extra emphasis on NA. I would like to understand this better."
The Instructors and the Manual are correct but don't always place the necessary details to the explanations of why this is so important. But Basically it's like this; This game is won by first being in the right place at the right time, and then having the good dice. Lol. Being at the right place is what this question is basically about. You want to have a broad range of stacks (3-5 stacks) throughout the map which especially include N. America so that when you get the right high spoils you don't have to climb over too many players in order to eliminate any other players. If you do not have a presence in N. America and you get the right spoils then what good is having the set of spoils and getting extra troops and not being able to eliminate some one in N. America? There are only 3 ways into N. America and 2 of them, Anchorage and Montreal will almost surely always be covered by troops of different players because they lead into Asia and into Europe. So some one will almost always have them covered. And if not those regions then some one will always cover Reykjavic or Madagan for the same reasons. There will always be extra troops and stacks on these regions by different players. The third way into N. America is through S. America but that way is even more difficult for the same reasons that players or a single player will almost surely always have many troops on any one of those four strings of territories that make up the entrance into N. America (Dakar, Sao Paulo, Bogota and Mexico City). It is easier to get to S. America or even into Australia then it would be to get into N. America (in most cases). Also I would note that the possibility of the various points of entry into N. America being held by different players would make their stacks on each one of those regions strong where as a single player holding those same key strategical position may have weaker stacks on them. Either way, if you have a stack in N. America then you need not bother with that. So if you do not have a presence, A Stack, in N. America and you get the right spoils, then you may not be able to win the game for lack of a stack in N. America. You need a stack in N. America to make it easier to eliminate other players there and get their spoils and win the game. I would point out that this problem is unique to N. America because anywhere else, basically Europe, Asia and Africa, the opportunity to swing around the really big stack almost always present themselves and if you can not get to one player one way then you can almost always get to that player from another way, from another direction. Or at least find the path with the least resistance. But in N. America there is no Choice in the matter. There are only those three ways into N. America or not at all. So as the old saying goes... "Be there or be a square!" [This message is brought to you by Cobra Industries (from G.I. Joe), Because Knowing, is half the battle.] ---
Hello again my friends, and welcome to your favorite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments!
We have another excellent article by
DaveH in his
Tournament Tips series, while
WorldCup4James again gives you coverage of the hot new tournaments in signups with
Join This? Or Not! Dukasaur Tournament Executive Tournament Tips by DaveH show: Excel coding to set up a tournament - Part 1
In the last newsletter I gave the code for creating a new menu. This created an additional menu called "My Macros" with three headings under it to run "My Macro No's 1 to 3". In this article we will start to define the coding you need to set up a template that you can use for managing a tournament. Initially we will extend the code we had in the last newsletter to define the code needed to put a new menu bar into the Excel spreadsheet menu bar. This will have a "Number of Players" selection so that you can select 8, 16, 32 or 64 players. You can then select "Type" which will be singles or doubles, and then a "Create a Template" selection to create a new spreadsheet set out ready for you to fill in and start your tournament! _____________ In this article we have the coding for a routine called "CreateMenu" which you can run to insert the new menu heading. The macros that can be called from the menu will be defined in future articles (explanations to the coding are included in the lines of code);Code: Select all Sub CreateMenu() Dim cMenu1 As CommandBarControl 'Dimension as a command bar control Dim cbcCutomMenu As CommandBarControl Dim cbMainMenuBar As CommandBar 'Dimension as a command bar Dim iHelpMenu As Integer Dim PlayerNumber As Integer Dim GameType As String PlayerNumber = 16 GameType = "Singles" 'Delete the existing "Tournament" menu heading On Error Resume Next 'In case it does not exist! Application.CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar").Controls("Tournament").Delete On Error GoTo 0 'Set a CommandBar variable to Worksheet menu bar Set cbMainMenuBar = Application.CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar") 'Return the Index number of the Help menu. We can then use 'this to place a custom menu before. iHelpMenu = cbMainMenuBar.Controls("Help").Index 'Add a Control to the "Worksheet Menu Bar" before Help. 'Set a CommandBarControl variable to it Set cbcCutomMenu = cbMainMenuBar.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlPopup, before:=iHelpMenu) 'Give the control our caption as "Tournament" 'The ampersand is before the underligned shortcut letter cbcCutomMenu.Caption = "Tourna&ment" 'Add the first menu item that will lead off to another menu 'Set a CommandBarControl variable to it With cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlPopup) ' Give the control a caption .Caption = "Number of Players" 'Working with our new Control, add a sub control and 'give it a Caption and tell it which macro to run (OnAction). With .Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "8" '.OnAction = "Players8" 'not yet defined If PlayerNumber = 8 Then 'Tick if 8 players .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With ' Repeat for the 16, 32 and 64 player menu headings With .Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "16" '.OnAction = "Players16" 'not yet defined If PlayerNumber = 16 Then 'Tick if 16 players .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With With .Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "32" '.OnAction = "Players32" 'not yet defined If PlayerNumber = 32 Then 'Tick if 32 players .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With With .Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "64" '.OnAction = "Players64" 'not yet defined If PlayerNumber = 64 Then 'Tick if 64 players .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With End With 'Add the second menu item that will lead off to another menu 'Set a CommandBarControl variable to it With cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlPopup) ' Give the control a caption .Caption = "Game Type" With .Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "Singles" '.OnAction = "PlayersSingles" 'not yet defined If GameType = "Singles" Then 'Tick if 64 players .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With With .Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "Doubles" '.OnAction = "PlayersDoubles" 'not yet defined If GameType = "Doubles" Then 'Tick if 64 players .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With End With With cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) ' Give the control a caption .Caption = "Create Template" ' .OnAction = "FormatCode" 'not yet defined .FaceId = 625 'assigns an icon to the dropdown End With End Sub Sub DeleteMenu() ' Use this if you get more than one "Tournament" menu item! On Error Resume Next Application.CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar").Controls("Tournament").Delete On Error GoTo 0 End Sub
A few notes on the above code: * The second subroutine "DeleteMenu" can be used to delete the "Tournament" menu heading should you be experimenting with the code and get more than one heading; * The "If, Else, End If" loops are to put the tick selection next to the correct submenu item; * The icon was chosen looking at a full set of icons listed on the following site:http://www.outlookexchange.com/articles/toddwalker/BuiltInOLKIcons.asp : The instructions for copying this set of codes into Excel are copied from the last article as follows:Code: Select all * Open Excel to create a new spreadsheet; * Press Alt+F11 from Excel which opens the Visual Basic Editor window; * In the top left pane you get "VBAProject (Book1)"; * Open the menu and sub-menu by clicking the [+] buttons; * Click "ThisWorkbook" to open a new window on the right; * Copy the above code and paste into the blank window; * To run the code either select Run from the menu or press F5
In the next article we will look at the macros used to change the "ticked" selections. (These "tips" are ones that I have tried to make it a bit easier in managing my own tournaments. I am sure there are different and better methods than these, so please let me know. Any queries on the above I'll be glad to respond to! Please note that I use Excel 2003, so there may be variation in the menu instructions if you have Excel 2007)

The summer heat is picking up, and, appropriately, we have our usual mix of heated, competitive tournaments ready for signups! Featured here are my picks of the most potentially exciting and creative tournaments, though you can certainly explore what all the many tournaments have to offer!Mad Tournament III Sign up as a Triples team in Mad777 's strenuous, six-bracket tournament that covers maps from across the globe. Consistency will be key, as you'll play six games at once, and need to ensure survival through the first round; only then can you begin amassing enough points to reach the Big Final. Each continent is represented by six maps, making for a diverse array of maps including nearly every style of play. Only a few spots remain, so grab some friends and join!Dr. Evil's Fricken Lazer Beam on the Moon Tournament "Oh yeah baby! Oh yeah baby!" Austin Powers fans, here's your time to shine! PonyGal offers you the chance to join the evil Dr. Evil in his brand-new diabolical plot to kill Austin Powers, or, alternatively, to side with Powers and "battle it out in the name of peace, love and disco!" Choose your track, good or Evil, and battle in this 64-player 1v1 tournament in the hopes of making it to the Final, where you determine the fate of planet Earth in a doubles game with your sidekick! There are plenty of premium prizes on the line and a variety of fitting maps to battle on, such as Lunar War. Already from the first post, there's a lot of energy and excitement exuded by the organiser (as implied by the title ), so don't miss out! Dussle's Mixed Throwback Tourney Dussle offers an opportunity to battle with some of the more original Conquer Club maps and settings. Doing away with Trench Warfare and Fog of War, and sticking to some of the earliest maps created on the site, his mixed tournament features Terminator, Standard, and Doubles games. The Final goes back to the basics: a most-traditional, 6-player Classic game. Friendship Festival Special Edition Dukasaur 's TPA Doubles tournament calls attention to the long-standing, trusted American bond between Canada and the United States. On each doubles team, one player must declare "I love Canada", and the other must declare "I love the U.S.A!" Each core round expresses the aspects shared by each nation, ranging from their native and colonial history to their waterways. The tournament spawns from the real-world "Friendship Festival" at Niagara Falls, which celebrates the nations' national holidays in July. Join and experience the friendship between the two American peoples; of course, you'll need to fight to the death, quite ironically, to achieve victory! These are my picks, but if you don't like any of these go to the Create/Join a Tournament or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the many others waiting to be filled. If you're craving tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum. You can be playing very quickly after signing up as a reserve.

thehippo8 -- Foundry ExecutiveFoundry News by thehippo8 show
Well our erstwhile reporter has been sent on assignment. He is currently exploring the cartographic lines that surround the world to ensure that they are straight and all accounted for. Some say that amounts to a holiday but I can assure you that it is nothing but work! In the meantime, you have to put up with me and my cockeyed view of the world! Some Goss So without further ado, let's talk about the current scandal (far too strong a word but hey this isn't the Wall Street Journal!) that is going on in the thread for Arshyusk . The thread starts off with a pretty map and positive feedback before ...DiM wrote: i'm always in favour of fantasy maps but these maps must excel in gameplay and graphics as well as theme because they don't have the advantage of being a map about a real life familiar place. right now you have a completely bland classic-style gameplay and your theme is non-existent. you have a made up title and that's it. what's the deal here? are those kingdoms? is a war going on? who fights it? even the terit names are so bland (A1,A2...) that they don't allow your imagination to go free. there's an eagle(?) used as army circles and that's a starting point for my imagination, but then i see the eagle is the same for all continents so that's a dead end. as for the graphics, the map looks like a randomly generated image (probably done with clouds/difference clouds) and this surely doesn't help because it gives the feeling of a rush-job.
Zimmah chirps in with some polite appeasement, but for ManBungalow it's like a red rag to a bull. He hurls back ...ManBungalow wrote: For fucks sake.
I'm sick of you coming into my map threads and giving this kind of shit every time.
Some people come to the foundry and give constructive criticism - okay, great, that's what it's all about.
Sometimes it's best to tell the map-maker that their skills would be better applied elsewhere (
3 Islands , for instance), but you seem to enjoy coming in here and pissing on my map ideas for the sake of it.
Last time I tried to give you some feedback in one of your map threads, you didn't even acknowledge my post.
It's too easy to comment on foundry elitism, and I think we've heard it all before, but maybe that's not the problem here.
I don't mean to pull a natty dread, but
move this to the recycling bin/whatever and I'll be back in a few weeks to see where I'll go with it.
DiM, realising the error of his ways comes back with an erudite post about graphics and what he believes to a map with the appearance of a rush job. But 12 minutes later we get this ...DiM wrote: yeah, because you have hundreds of map threads and i'm part of some sort of conspiracy to troll youin each and everyone of them. get over yourself. i merely post my opinion on a certain map. the fact that you don't like my opinions and can't take criticism is solely your problem. as far as i know your only maps are marooned where i commented on the water and expressed my concern on the many gameplay bottlenecks and this map. none of my posts where "omg you suck get out of here". in fact both of them contained valid points of view that you can either take into consideration or dismiss with proper arguments. and that talk about elitism is pure crap. i've criticised both old and new mapmakers without ever thinking how many maps they made. in fact with experienced mapmakers i tend to be even more concentrated on nitpicks to the point where i totally annoy some of them. just ask cairnswk. but that's because i have higher expectations from them.
Thereafter the thread potters back to sensible discussion but we are yet to hear back from ManBungalow himself. Will he ignore DiM and look to the positive support from others or will this become world-war-three? Watch this space!Even after the fat lady has sung it ain't over Fluffing about in the Foundry, I thought I'd have a gander at the quenched maps. To my surprise (and delight) I see that people don't just sit back and go phew that's it done and dusted and I'm finished . They still think about their maps and the community comes together to keep improving the old maps where that is possible. Even when the old map-maker loses interest that's not the end of it. Check out the thread in Dust Bowl . There Chapcrap rightly found that the XML could do with some tinkering. And by jove he's been given the green light to do it. It will be good to see this map be given a new breath of life. If you havn't played it then go play it immediately and you'll understand what Chapcrap means. Kudos Chapcrap and I can't wait to see the fruits of your labour!Bring back the pig! In something reminiscent of a Pink Floyd fan club, the Piglandia map looms over the Crowd. Tear down the wall, tear down the wall ! I hear the crowd cry. But no it has been locked and will not be. But as stated in the thread from the last (split) newsletter ...natty dread wrote: DiM wrote: natty dread wrote: pigland was a parody map that was never intended to be developed
sadly i think piglandia would actually fly through the foundry right now. it certainly looks better than some maps we have in final forge and the gameplay would be a breeze especially if i go with something classic as there's hardly anybody left active in the foundry to complain.
Sadly I think you're actually right.
Well, personally DiM, why not give the people what they want?

Voices from "The Bin" by Flapcake show
Recycled box or as other prefer to call it, The bin . This is also where maps during development go on holiday - such as when the creator has stalled, or needs a break, or has no time because of real life pushing on. This is of course voluntary time they spend on the maps. The recycled box is where maps go from an idea (Melting Pot: Map Ideas) and often longer (to the Final Forge) only to move to The Bin of some of the aforementioned reasons. But it also happens that a creator has a great idea (he thought himself ) but no-one liked it or there was not the support as perhaps it deserved and so it ends up in The Bin. But why does the foundry have a scrap yard? Why not just delete it completely from the network surface? Well, imagine if someone came by and thought "maybe I can bring something good to this ". Brand new eyes with completely new ideas, and maybe the map was simply ahead of its time? And when the time finally comes to it, it could be brought back to life and get huge success. When one thinks on process in the foundry, it is to keep the thread going, keep updates straight, commenting on people's feedback, take everything into one's work to develop the map, it is a large consuming and long-term project. There are 142 + maps, entitled "Abandoned" out of 212 maps available for play. That's 33% that never became something! I've looked a little into some of the maps that never materialized. I've also asked the foundry foreman thenobodies80 , about how he remembered the early days in the recycled box, here is what he answered:"The very reason the bin is now called recycling box and how we (CAs) see it. When MrBenn was the foreman and I was his deputy, we talked about The Bin. In our mind that place would have been the forum for the map that have a choice to become CC maps. All map ideas that have no choice to become real maps (draft) should stay in ideas. For this reason we decided to rename The Bin into recycling box , to give the idea that if a topic is there, there's also a possibility to bring it back to life and transform it into a CC map! The old names gave a bad idea of that forum...like it was the place for trash. In that period I moved mostly all bad map projects from The Bin to ideas (that actually is the real Foundry bin). I know that, even if I cleaned it about a year ago, the recycling box is a forum with many maps and maybe many of them will never see the day, but for us, the CAs, if a map is in the RB, there's a valid reason for a mapmaker to try that project and push it to the completion. And now, that I'm the foreman, I ask to the other CAs to move into the RB only maps that have received at least the Draft Stamp, in few words the maps in which everyone agree about the fact the the idea behind the map project is a good one. If a map project has not received stamp yet and it's no longer persued by a maker, that project must be considered just an idea and so it goes into ideas, where it stays till someone else try to continue it again. Instead some maps that are into ideas, precisely those that are at the bottom of that forum, should be deleted imo, but on CC we don't delete threads so, as you can see, nowdays, ideas has become an hell.....maybe a day I'll find a solution for all that mess! So, in general, I think it's important for the people to know that the recycling box forum is not a bin; they won't find shit there, but beautiful flowers that have yet to bloom."
Maps waiting for their spring to come: wise words and beautiful thoughts. Now then, is there any movement in that forum ? At first sight it seems very quiet, but through time a lot has happend there. I have found some examples of some of the most spectacular or sad stories if you like: Who remembers map creator Jupitersking ? Was it some of the aforementioned that caused his quite excellent attempts to create some interesting maps to run out of energy? In my opinion it was his first attempt to create a map that was his best. With some work the map could surely earn a place among CC´s long list of beautiful maps.Norlan map :Click image to enlarge. Apparently there were some who did not agree with it, there came some critique and his comment was:JupitersKing wrote: Another map I posted was received with dirty names and rotten tomatoes hurled at me.
Lastly, it also seems that my Norlan map has next to, if not, zero interest. But in the hope that eventually something will be liked I have attempted again. "To hell with the nay sayers."
Maybe he gave up too quickly? Perhaps he should have worked on the first instead of starting a new map - which I think is pretty much poorer, but funny enough, people liked it better. Space Station Map :Click image to enlarge. And suddenly, just 6 weeks after he started the first map, there was total silence. What a shame! That was some good attempts to make some exciting maps. "Jupiter King" has not been past the CC since April 2010th. Another example of what goes in The Bin is the map Balkan peninsula . I guess most people have played it? The map was started by ZeakCytho . From the start he had a big commitment to the map - but he got less and less time to work on the project. And the 18th of April 2009 was the last time ZeakCytho gave any commentary to the map:ZeakCytho wrote: I apologize again for not responding sooner, been very busy with real life stuff. I'll respond to everything...sometime next week
Big thanks to everyone who has commented!
Two months later the map was scrapped. Yet the map still had much support and many could not understand what the map was doing in The Bin. MrBenn apparently could not understand this and he made contact with ZeakCytho. With ZeakCytho's permission, MrBeen finalized the map. It's a really nice map , thanks for that MrBenn:Click image to enlarge. Not all maps are lucky enough to be picked up and completed like Balkan penisula , and some maps even went so far as the "Final Forge" only to be abandoned to The Bin. Does anyone remember Romania by foregone ? It got all stamps, had a complete XML code, missing only a couple details of being quenched to the beta only to find the map creator from one day to another simply vanishing. It was not possible to run it as a beta, as the future adjustments that would come should be made of the map maker, and when no one had access to his files or his permission to work at it there was no alternative but to scrap it. So close and then so far! A beautiful map, it certainly deserved a place on CC´s map list:Click image to enlarge. This is only a few stories out of many from "The Bin" and not all we need to be sad about! Some just didn't have what it takes. But it gives us a insight to the fact that when finally a map is born, it has been far and wide indeed! Thousands of thoughts have been thought. Tons of ideas made and scrapped. Hard work, passion, adjustments, perseverance, diligence and interest are just a handful of the things it takes to push a map all the way. Its with honorable respect when I browse through The Bin's abandoned maps. These deposited ideas have not been all for nothing! They are the bedrock of the foundry. Also important stuff can be learned here. By not copy some of the worst attempts you get a good start to making a map.Best regards! Flapcake
Food for thought koontz1973 show
Thats right, you heard the hippo correctly, I am on holiday, away from the internet, but I did manage to find a way to give my thoughts on something. Naming maps. Lets rename all the city maps on the classic map Classic Cities: Why should this be done, apart from the work side for lackattack and thenobodies80, there is no drawbacks to this idea. Here is a list of cities from classic that have a map.New York Chicago Vancouver London Berlin Istanbul And here is the list of maps in the foundry that are from the map, all have Classic cities in the title.Jakarta Sydney Port Moresby Moscow It has always surprised me that all of these cities have not been done by now. This will leave 32 not done to date when all of these are live. But here is the argument for doing it. All of these maps are part of conquer club history. For better or worse, when the classic map had its beginnings, names for the cities where fought over, what fit where was discussed for many forum pages. So placing the city maps next to the classic map in the start a game pages would seem to fit. And when more of these come along, they will sit along side the classic map to. Another argument for doing it would be to draw players into these maps. Just look at the amount of games played on classic compared to any other map. No wonder as it is the first map in the list. With the association by title, it might draw players out of there comfort zone and into the arena mass map playing. This can only be good for all of the maps in the long run. Lastly, and this can only be good for the foundry, when one of these maps gets made in the future, more players might take an interest in it. Instead of having the usual one or two, some feedback from people who live in these cities can only benefit the style of the map. Thats all folks. Back to my holiday now. Happy gaming everyone, whatever map takes your fancy.
We have a cracker section up this week as both Skill and Quik live up to their names to give a double dose of news on the latest action on the Clan Scene.
We start off with a brief run-through of the results from the first round of Conquer Cup 3, then move onto Final action in Newcomers Cup 2, and a very informative look at the Clans involved in NC3!
We then present our feature article for this month for non-clan members to learn about the pro's and cons to joining a clan, before wrapping up with our (no longer exclusive) Clan Rankings as the baton passes onto
IcePack after this July update!
I also invite you all to post questions to me as the latest interviewee of the dispatch!

NewComers Cup 2 Finals by Skillfusniper33 show
GR vs LHDD Well we have finally made it to the finals and have a very fun match up with the guys who have been around the block a few times with Grim Reapers and the New guys to move in with Les Hussards du Dragon. This war had started a little while ago and we are at about the half way mark. While the score is currently 11-10 with GR leading, but it will be tied once the Hive quads game finishes up in a few rounds. The final game for GR's home set is Das Schoss which is still up in the air and could go either way very easily. LHDD will be creating their home set of games very soon which will include 24 games (GR made 23). I expect them to be making many of the same games that they have made in their past few rounds in this tournament since it has been working for them. As for the final score I don't have a clue who will win, but I do believe that it won't be by very many games. The final score will probably be 25-22 at the farthest difference. Good Luck to both LHDD and GR in this final.
NewComers Cup 3 Round 1 by Skillfusniper33 show
Well most clans couldn't seem to wait to get into the next Newcomers Cup, and sign ups started in late May, and gave about 1 month of time for the clans to get involved. After that time frame Benga (the organizer) was able to get 12 clans to sign up. Unlike the previous Newcomers Cup the clans were randomly seeded instead of selected via F400 Ranking. This did prove to get and interesting draw for some clans, making tough roads for a couple as well as easier routes for others.PARTICIPATING CLANS The New Crusade (TNC) The Riders on the Storm (RotS) The Fantistic Four Skins (TFFS) 1st Regiment Foot Grenadiers (1RFG) Ulti-M8's (UM8) Headless Horsemen (HH) Random Heroes (RH) Igni Ferroque (IGNI) Always kicking A$$ (AKA) Magnificent Bastards (MB) Retribution (RET) The Fallen (FALL)Links to Round 1 Wars IF vs RH TNC vs TFFS MB vs 1RFG FALL vs UM8s Clan Previews The New Crusade (TNC) - A clan that has been around for a long time and has developed some very good players. Their first round match up is one of the strongest in this tournament. For some reason they seem to get unlucky with the draws and get one of the tougher clans just like in the Previous tournament (faced LHDD in round 1).The Riders on the Storm (RotS) - A newer clan that I haven't seen be part of any activities outside of recruiting. I don't really expect these guys to be able to get a win even though they got a first round bye out of the random draw. The Fantistic Four Skins (TFFS) - An older clan that has had some success, but are underestimated by many people in my opinion. I expect these guys to be able to make the semi-finals very easily, and possibly win the entire tournament.1st Regiment Foot Grenadiers (1RFG) - An older clan that should have a fairly easy chance at making it through to the semi-finals since they are facing 2 very knew and unproven clans that don't really have a very impressive roster. Ulti-M8's (UM8) - A fairly new clan that has been in a few wars, and has gotten their first win under their belt. I don't think they will be able to get through the first round since they are up against a very tough looking clan.Headless Horsemen (HH) - An older clan that is very strong. I expect these guys to be able to put up a very good fight in Round 2 since they got a 1st round bye. I am not sure if they can move onto the semi finals, but should be able to put up a very good showing in the upcoming war.Random Heroes (RH) - A new clan that hasn't done much outside of recruiting, and doing internal work. I don't have many expectations since their roster doesn't seem to strong, but the should be able to make their first war be pretty close.Igni Ferroque (IGNI) - A fairly young clan that hasn't had much success in their wars, and finally got their first win in NC2 before loosing in Round 2 to AKA. They have improved some, and I expect them to be able to get at least 1 win again.Always kicking A$$ (AKA) - An old clan that competed in the last Newcomers Cup, and made it to the semi finals before loosing to Grim Reapers. They are a strong clan, and I expect them get a few wins in the tournament again.Magnificent Bastards (MB) - An older clan that hasn't had many good results for them, but each war is becoming closer and closer. I am not sure I can see them getting a win in Round 1 since they were against the same clan and got beaten pretty bad.Retribution (RET) - A clan that has been around for a little while, but hasn't really be involved in many clan activities outside of their private forums and recruiting. But I expect them to be able to put up a good showing in their first match up which will come in round 2.The Fallen (FALL) - A brand clan that broke off from KOA, and by the looks of their roster they look very powerful, and in my opinion will be able to take at least 1 win in this tournament, but believe they could very easily get to the finals.
Clan for Newbies by QuikSilver show
The clan scene has become well developed for the last few years on ConquerClub. First of all I'd like to say that this article is more about pros and cons of being in clan. A little word to all the free agents on this site - the players without a clan. Why are you without a clan? Have you thought about them before? Are you interested? Have you already been in a clan, but left for some reason? Maybe you want to join one, but don't know how or who! First of all, here's a link to a post made by Masli which explains the technical bits on how to join a clan: viewtopic.php?f=438&t=156315 I'd like to explain my own personal story that's quite common on the clan scene. A story that I'm sure some will relate to. When I started to play on this site, I started with a friend of mine. We began soon enough to play a doubles game and learnt to play doubles games together. We were very good at it, winning often. We were friend so when we made a mistake, we weren't mad at each other. We are also two player that speak french, a common language that helped us a lot. When he stopped playing, I started playing alone. Soon thereafter I played a standard 1v1 against somebody, I lost, but he told me, you're a good player, you should start looking for a clan. So I did. And pretty soon I found Les Hussards du Dragon. When I joined this clan, my level of gaming increased a lot. By speaking to other players of my clan I learnt new maps, increased my knowledge in triples and quadruple games. I started to play tournaments with them, making great teams. All these challenges of clan wars and tournaments increased my interest of this site. Even my friend Momo33 started playing CC again and joined the clan. We both made new & great partnership with the other players of LHDD. That was some pros of being in a clan, keeping interest in the site with good competition and challenges. Also increases your knowledge of maps etc and making new partners to conquer them all! There're also some cons, as an example, don't miss a turn in clan wars, your teammates will be furious. Take this seriously if you want to be in a competitive clan. You also have a forum, it's for use. If you do not get involved, members of your clan may ignore you in a clan war and forget about you. Be active! It's a little social group. Some clans are more interested in the person than the player. There is a clan for everyone, just start looking with your own idea of what you want and where you want to be. If you do not like what you see... start your own
