Speaking of the newer versions of Civ, just so everyone knows, Civilization V is on sale on Steam right now for $7 and the newest expansion (Gods & Kings) is on sale for $7 also. So for $14 you can get the newest version of the Civilization series. That's 75% off, so you can't beat it (besides pirating, of course).
I've played almost every version of Civilization right from Civ1 through to Civ Alpha Centurai, Free Civ, and all the rest...I've never regretted getting them. If you figure out how many hours you spend playing them and take into account the price of the game, it's about the cheapest form of entertainment out there. Actually, Civilization has been assigned as homework at some colleges, so it's educational too! I'll have to dig around and try to find the link to the article about that...
