You're not far off the mark. ISIS is motivated by fundamentalist Islamic belief, which necessarily includes "end-time" prophesy. Islamic end-times prophesy has many points of similarity with Christian end-times prophesy. In fact, the Koran agrees with the Bible that Jesus will return on Judgement Day.

It's fascinating to realize that the leadership of ISIS are not the lying hypocrites that we normally expect leaders to be. They are true believers who genuinely believe their own bullshit.
