Map Scenarios Option *Pending*

Postby Twill on Sat Apr 15, 2006 6:15 pm

Would it be possible to implement a scenario system with pre-assigned troop deployments on particular maps and random assignemnt of those positions.

For example, I could take the europe map, set up a WWII scenario (say, the opening days) with up to 6 sides.

6 people then join, and get randomly assigned to be "the germans" the "brits" the "french", "russians", "italians", "scandinavians" etc (there would have to be 30 neutral men in Switzerland to assure permanant neutrality of course) and then people would play from there - it would require a degree of diplomacy because defenses would be set up along axis-allied lines so if the brits decided to "change sides" they could screw the french over pretty easily.

Or, you could have the "land grab" scenario, where x number of players begin back to back with 30 men each, and 1 neutral player in each other country. Then it's just a matter of who can grab the most the fastest and defend it - now THAT would be a fantastic real time freestyle match.

It would have to be tweaked for team games (i.e. randomly assigning roles within team boundaries etc), but would make them pretty fun.

Anyhoo, I just think it would be fun to do - and would be a lot easier for user submitted scenarios than maps because there is less artowrk involved.

a rating system could even be added, or we could just use the forum, so that people know which scenarios suck and which ones dont.

If people think it would work, I would be happy to come up with a framework for the files to reduce lack's workload, but dont want to do it if people think the system would suck.

Scenarios suck!! With pre-arranged troops, you always know the weak points of other players, the strategies to win, etc... Randomic games are great because of infinite possibilities. Scenarios, in the other hand, are pretty limited / repetitive. I dont know players that stay playing and re-playing same scenarios in games like Civilization and others alike. Random generated games are the must. My opinion only.

mabye you can do senarios but then add the random by also adding the actual troop deployment feature so you start with certain countries but then you can put your troops how ever you want on your territory

also i weakness i see in the original idea would be the differences in continental bonusus ex. if i was assigned france then i would get more or less depending on the other people (lets say italy) well then i would have a advantage or disadvantage at the start and the only way i see of fixing this would to get rid of them compleatly or just have it for the nutral contries that are not controled in the beginning

argh stop bringing up old posts :)

just to add to marvaddins post - the beauty of civilization is the random generator of the maps and different settings so you can adjust and make different strategies :)

What he said. Once a person has played the scenario, he/she is unlikely to play it many more times, because it will grow repetitive and boring, the only people who would play it continuosly is those who want more points.

Twill i agree with you :P lol but not as such, we should use scenario's on special day, you kno when we remeber these wars ect ect and then lack could make a special scenario for this day..........i think that wouldent be boring at all and i would happily play it.

If we go along with this scenario i think there should be a 'cc calander' with all the remberance days on it so we can see when these scenario's come up.

thanks Twill with your post i got lots of idea's and i hoestly believe this to be one of the better idea's from the last couple we had.

They'd be different scenario's for different events in history, and depending on how many are choosen would decide the size of our calander...

A different kind of scenario

Postby StellarTek on Sat Aug 05, 2006 4:26 am

A way back burner idea: Have ya ever played the old Risk by Hasbro with the scenario option, it has a storm that moves and you can’t attack between it and “Random Events” afflicts players with things like: revolution, plagues, famine, desertion, etc. It’s a riot, be prepared for a very long game! Just an idea for way down the road.

good idea but it would have to be on some type of rotation like a new scenario every week so it is harder to exploit weaknesses because it changes so often

I hope you realize you just bumped a thread that is almost 10 MONTHS old.

Wow.....
they wouldnt need to change the map every week. everyone would have the same weaknesses to exploit, so it would be fair.

I saw this thread in the Pending section of the Suggestion box, and even though it's a very OLD topic, I think it should be put in lack's To-Do list :)

the great part of this idea is that the huge factor luck is reduced; the drop can be made equal.
also, we could make maps for battlefield reenactments.
We can already relive the epic batle of Napoleon vs. Wellington (Waterloo), but it's more like we are hopping over his troops than really being those troops, if you know what I mean :)

Lots of people play scenerio-style games a lot. Axis and Allies, for instance. Tons of games don't have great random deployment options, and they can still be very popular.

It might be hard to make a well-balanced scenario, but a lot of how fun it is depends on the people you play with and the strategies they try.

In my case, I often play with a group of friends. In a scenario, we might play a few times with different position assignments, or putting the best players in the worst starting positions.

Personally, I find random layout stupid. I won a game yesterday because I started the game with multiple set bonuses, and my opponents didn't. Earlier today, I lost one 'cause an opponent started with 4/5 territories in the key/special area of the map, and I never had a chance...

I understand that a lot of people like the random map stuff, but a lot of people like campaign or fairly-distributed stuff too... I don't see a reason *not* to allow it.... It'd probably get a number of additional people playing...
