2007-04-27 03:55:57 - JoshJ: selma: the only reason aces won was because of our starting drop + you GIVING him morrowind
2007-04-27 03:56:28 - JoshJ: if you'd fought with him over morrowind the battlefield would not have broken down with yellow/blue/red in the south and green in the north
2007-04-27 03:59:49 - Selma: Josh, I really respect you as a player. I had my goals :) I'm sure aces had his, I'm sure bogg had his (before getting tired) and I'm sure you had yours :)
2007-04-27 04:00:30 - Selma: It was in my best interest to find a place for me to begin to grow. Blackmarsh seemed more appropriate for me as he had alot of morrowind to start with, I had nothing to gain from contesting his rule in Morrowind.
2007-04-27 04:01:32 - Aces: hehe she's right man. Morrowind was mine. I also had little to gain from going into a place already majorly dominated by Selma. Why waste armies taking a country that I know she will retake the next turn? At that point, it was too early to get involved in
2007-04-27 04:02:19 - Aces: full scale war without a backbone to fall back on. My goal I accomplished, I intended to honour my deal with marsh and move into Skyrim. I did that anyway (even handicapping myself by neglecting the treaty with marsh halfway through)
2007-04-27 04:04:11 - Selma: thx aces. And I wasnt trying to be a pushover. I was hoping to take control of Hammerfell hehe. Guess we both had the same idea of expansion while honoring our one treaty between 2 countries. Had I taken hammerfell I would have attacked you in skyrim tho
2007-04-27 04:04:21 - Selma: I wouldnt have struck a deal there lol
2007-04-27 04:06:10 - Aces: I know. Dont let what josh is saying bother you. your not a stupid player. Sometimes in risk things are an uphill battle from the getgo. Someone who controls australia might be in good shape vs 6 players (as neither of them can control any other continent
2007-04-27 04:07:18 - Aces: but also if playing against 2 others, owning australia isnt that good, likely that someone else has europe, or north america, in which case you have good, but they have better. The trick it to try to make the best out of what you have, set a goal that....
2007-04-27 04:07:20 - JoshJ: selma's actions didn't hurt her from the outset, what it did though was it basically screwed yellow and myself over
2007-04-27 04:08:03 - JoshJ: the problem is when she let you have morrowind and took the black marsh, she was giving aces an advantage, but severely screwed over yellow and myself because neither of us had a workable position from there
2007-04-27 04:08:21 - Aces: Selma played the game for selma. not for you, yellow or me. I also played to win. as did you and as did yellow. Selma made the appropriate move to advance in the game. Its not her fault that she crowded other players out, thats the point of the game :)
2007-04-27 04:09:03 - JoshJ: right, but when you crowd out all the players in the same area as you are, it ends up screwing you up because you're letting the other person grow freely
2007-04-27 04:11:14 - JoshJ: everything has a chain reaction type effect- the worst thing you can do is weaken another player in a way that DOESN'T benefit you
2007-04-27 04:11:39 - Selma: I'm afraid there is no outline for the perfect strategy in this game :(
2007-04-27 04:11:46 - Aces: The alternative was her staying and fighting in a place where she had under 33% of the land belonging to her. This would result in her wasting 3 men after 3 men after 3 men and myself just taking them back. It would have slowed me down but killed her.
2007-04-27 04:12:33 - JoshJ: aces- hardly. selma had well over half the troops in morrowind, and your best play in that situation would have been to take skyrim or hammerfell from there
2007-04-27 04:12:48 - Aces: She did the one thing that would have moved her (and did) move her along the furthest possible. She established a base area to expand from and selected 1 target.
2007-04-27 04:13:34 - JoshJ: right, there's no "perfect strategy" but focusing solely on yourself and not on the effects it has on other people is suboptimal
2007-04-27 04:14:03 - Aces: lol thats where taste comes in. I wanted the northern continent first, and I would get it :) from there I can expand either way I wanted. she wanted black marsh. So fine, worked for me, I could expand to skyrim as planned........
2007-04-27 04:14:42 - Aces: if she wanted skyrim, I would have invaded blackmarsh and held morrowind and blackmarsh.é
2007-04-27 04:19:30 - Selma: Either way, I can only play this game to the best of my ability, I developped a base, I strengthened my forces and I expanded. I was outplayed and I accept that. Aces you ARE an amazing player. And very polite. Not a sore winner hehe. you too Josh, very..
2007-04-27 04:19:43 - Selma: enjoyable person to play with. Lets definately play again sometime.
2007-04-27 04:20:27 - Selma: I'm going to log out now. I think its clear who the "top dog" is. Thanks again to you both. Dont forget to leave a positive feedback for our friend boggscy :)
2007-04-27 04:22:21 - JoshJ: BAH. no chance at the last-ditch comeback now... though even if i had gotten a set 121 to 67 is still insane
2007-04-27 04:25:01 - Aces: indeed. Listen. I wont be interpretting your comments as being negative towards me. but I credit myself to being a great strategist......
2007-04-27 04:25:45 - Aces: I play a mean chess game lol and I'm good at this game. If I have the time to put into it and have interest, I will find ways to win. I am a creative player and I do use diplomacy......
2007-04-27 04:26:41 - Aces: The key is finding a situation that someone else thinks is to their advantage and give it to them, in return I can place myself in almost any situation I want and often rely on that person's support via 1 country to another. Not an alliance, but a mutual
2007-04-27 04:27:21 - Aces: agreement on one or 2 areas. I can take this diplomacy and work with it. Now its a risk because sometimes the person I deal with grows faster than me, in that case I take measures to regain thelead in the end-game lol.
2007-04-27 04:27:41 - JoshJ: right, that's what you did with selma. selma put herself in a continent that gets 3 bonus armies and has 5 territories and you in a continent with 4 bonus armies and 7 territories. That's a bit of a lopsided deal right there.
2007-04-27 04:30:51 - Aces: I will admit it is. But the art is that she was satisfied. Ever play classic risk? Ever notice how some people, beyond understanding are satisfied beginning with Australia instead of Asia? Even tho asia produces many more men, some prefer the simplicity..
2007-04-27 04:31:28 - Aces: ... of defending 1 border....... also, some will take South america, again, only gives 2 guys, but they like the fact they only need to defend 2 countries and can either move into North america or africa.....
2007-04-27 04:32:04 - Aces: Diplomacy is an art in this game because it reflects a player's style. Selma obviously prefers the smaller, easier-to-defend continents first. Which I understand, I used to like those too when I started....
2007-04-27 04:32:21 - JoshJ: I never said you played poorly...
2007-04-27 04:33:02 - Aces: So to her, she got the better side of the deal. For me, I have now experience in pocketing groups of soldiers and then thoroughly and confidently taking a continent when its ready to be defended. I'm never in a rush. For this reason I thrive off of bigger
2007-04-27 04:33:53 - Aces: continents. The good and bad is that First off, sense its bigger, I wait longer to get it, thats fine, 3 men a turn suites me for the beginning, sense it takes longer, nobody takes you as a big threat early on :)
2007-04-27 04:34:32 - Aces: and I know, you never said it, I read into it a bit. I apologize, I didnt win this game off of someone's mistake. I won because of great play matched vs great play of others :)
2007-04-27 04:35:19 - Aces: sorry, again its not making sense....
2007-04-27 04:36:01 - Aces: we all played the best game we could under the circumstances. Using diplomacy I established myself. So did selma. She was content with the smaller continent, I was patient and took the bigger when I could dfend it.....
2007-04-27 04:36:42 - Aces: this diplomacy put us both ahead of you and bogg.... when this happend, you had no option but to try to cramp our growth. This meant you couldnt invest in your own establishment. I firmly believe you never got both feet on the ground lol
2007-04-27 04:37:02 - Aces: Whenever you got a set of cards, I got lucky right behind you and was able to neglect any established military hehe
2007-04-27 04:37:33 - JoshJ: you're correct, i never got both feet on the ground and bogg giving up didn't help matters any. you had an alliance to the south and no contest on the north due to the geography
2007-04-27 04:38:00 - Aces: All in all, would my negociations have failed with selma, you would have likely been able to take Elsweyr and not have to attack me in morrowind or her in black Marsh, we could have seen a different story lol
2007-04-27 04:38:34 - Aces: I plan to end this next turn..... before I do....
2007-04-27 04:39:27 - Aces: I want to thank you for a great game. In addition to being one hell of a competitor, you are a great communicator and I would play a doubles game with you anytime. For now tho I look forward to our next rivalry match.
2007-04-27 04:40:19 - Aces: This was our first time playing, you know my style now, you know what to expect from me. You know what I can do. I see how you can make what little you have work from the beginning, I havent seen you dfend a lead yet as you've rarely had one but I'm.....
2007-04-27 04:40:34 - Aces: impressed at your style and tenacity in going after Elsweyr.
2007-04-27 04:41:04 - Aces: My gamemode is always: Select an area, fortify it, expand from it.
2007-04-27 04:41:33 - Aces: I rarely bother myself with the expansion of others unless I notice too much of a potential threat. I guess in your eyes that would have been me this round.
