Celebrate 100 Maps!

Welcome to this week's News Hound report.
This week we have great, great news.
On the 12th of September 2008 an historic event happened. ConquerClub hit the 100 map mark. Yes, you heard right. 100 maps!

This is an amazing milestone, even greater when you think about it. Because all maps, except for 3, have been produced by CC members in the Map Foundry. Since ConquerClub first started, a new quenched map has arrived on average every two weeks. The map which broke the magic 100, was Conquer 4, made by yeti_C and gimil.

To celebrate this milestone, CC is giving away 3 grand prizes. 100$ in cash, 1 year free premium membership and any 1 item from the ConquerClub Shop!

To get one of these grand prizes, you have to make a video about something, anything, that has to do with ConquerClub and then upload it to YouTube.com.

The winning videos will be decided by a poll, which everyone can vote in. Those videos which will be included in the poll is decided by the administration. Since it's a map celebration, then bonus points will be given to videos about maps. The winning video of the poll will get the cold hard $100, the 2nd place gets to pick either the 1 year premium membership, or an item from the ConquerClub Shop, 3rd place gets the item which is left.

New videos can be submitted until Oct 14th at 11:59pm. So make a video while you still have time!!

There has been come videos made already:

Hecter's Video Submission
An Ode to CC Video (By The Lanyards)
frankiebee's Conquerclub video
Orange-Idaho-Dog's 100 Map Celebration Video
samuelc812's ConquerClub Tribute
100 Map Celebration by karelpietertje

Keep your eye out for new videos on this thread: viewforum.php?f=279

With all this grand celebration, the News Hound has come to the end.

I'm White Moose saying... Thanks!

This week we sat down for an interview with blakebowling.
Next week, our interview will be with the player and organiser, conquerAce. If you have any questions you can go post them in this thread.

Now, on with the interview!

Q: Hello, blakebowling.

A: Hi Gozar

Q:How did you find this website?

A: Google Magic

Q: Why did you join CC?

A: Because playing Risk in real life takes too long

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A: I liked playing a lot of the same games, and got too lazy to search for them

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: Everybody else was doing it  .... Seriously, I always liked being in charge, and I had a few unique ideas for tournaments.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A: uhh. I started the third day after I found the site (really, I did) ... About 5-6 Months (I think)

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A: I assisted with Risk Game: The Classic, but the first tournament that I did alone was my Restaurant Tournament.

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: Some from looking at the Tournament forums, some from TV shows, and some from things other members mentioned.

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A: Inspiration?? I do it to escape boredom ;)

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: My first tournament ran, I can describe with one word: Frustrating. I'm not sure exactly which tournament I first played in.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A: I have completed Two (and have one nearing completion), I hope to run at least 10 -15 tournaments, but it will probably take me a few more years (as I traditionally run them in the Summer.

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A:Risk Game: The Classic, Restaurant Tournament, and I'm currently organizing, Wrestling Tournament.(original names right)

Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?

A:I'm not sure I have a favorite, I liked them all.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A: The Final Point Grabbers, because OP did it  ..... because it was one of the best organized tournaments I've been in, and I learned a new map in the process.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A: Running is better when I have a lot of free time, but entering is much easier.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A: Not really, most of my tournaments are random.

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A: Choosing them myself is easier (not always easy to find players though), So I usually let them customize something.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: About 70-80 % of my games are in tournaments.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: Honestly, I don't remember.

Q:Have you ever won a tournament?

A: No, the farthest I've been is to the Semi-Finals.

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A:Point Grabbers (because I let someone win, as I thought I was advancing)

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A: A successful organizer

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A:Point Grabbers was good (partially because it was run by OP), basically there are a group of organizers that always have great ideas (a few: amazzony, Natewolfman, Gozar, Gilligan, Optimus Prime, barterer2002...I have a feeling that I'm missing someone)

Q: What is the best Tournament that you think has been underestimated?

A: I'm not sure

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A: I was disappointed by some of the participants in my first tournament (people that didn't join their games). I've been in basically all good tournaments though.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A: The ability to run successful tournaments . Actually, open mindedness is one of the most important things.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A: Basically, I don't do much advertising, I tell 'friends' on the site, but other than that, it's just people that happen over my thread. I would have to say that Organizer Popularity, and uniqueness are the things that attract the most people.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A: If anything, I would have to say I dislike sending customized PM's the most. I know it isn't required, but it makes players remember you when looking for a tournament to join.

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A: The medals  ... I'm not really sure why I like it, I just do.

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A: I don't like to focus on mistakes, I'm an optimist.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: In my most recent tournament, I followed the advice of some of the players to lower the number of participants (even though this would ruin my secret plan).

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A: I would have to say yes, but, they shouldn't get a medal for organizing an in-clan tournament. It depends on the format. If it's a standard bracket, then I would let them join, but if there are any twists/tricks in the tournament, then I would sit it out.

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A: My tournaments usually get more updates in Create/Join than anywhere else. In Ongoing, I usually wait until a few games end, after a week or so, I'll give an update anyway.

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A: No.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A: It depends on how far along the tournament is, if it's first round, you'll usually earn a bye, if it's farther than that, I usually use the person that lost to the deadbeat in the previous round.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I would change something, but after thinking about it, I should probably leave it out.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: O.T.I.S. :D . If anything should be removed, I would say that it would be the 'officialness' in tournaments, (meaning the Handbook would be slightly modified).

Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?

A: A way to auto-measure wins (like 2/3 games is a win/advance)

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: On your next trip to The Home Depot or Lowe's, buy some spare nuts and bolts ;)

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A: :-k

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A: Most of it.

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A: Yes.

Q:Who are you?

A: ummm... blakebowling

Q: Why did you pick the name blakebowling?

A: I'm blake, and I enjoy bowling

Q:Where are you from?

A: The U.S.

Q:Favourite play colour?

A: Not pink.

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A: AOR 3 or Doodle, least favorite... Waterloo **twitch**

Q:Favourite settings?

A:Freestyle, Standard, No Cards, Unlimited, Foggy

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A: Freestyle

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Yes. :-$

Q: Any parting shots?

A: Nope.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Anytime
