like the one on the back of his car?

anyhow, that's enough for now. My parents arrived on time as predicted, I sat up late with me Mum, getting drunk , Tad talked bollocks in utterly typical fashion, (80% of the students at Cardiff university are Chinese, we were the only white people on the London Underground, your twin nephews are both top of the class in every subject etc). Wait, i suddenly realised why Mum wanted to sit up late drinking and talking, even though 5 hours jet-lagged.

(that last bit was ironic - I've known that for many years).

Goodnight, and I thank you all.

The key is to find excuses not to spend too much time with them. Real excuses if you can.

Result* tonight - my boy had a showcase night at school. I went to look at his work, and his contemporaries'. Then he and a few mates did a live version of their 1940's radio show (very moving/amusing). I went round the science fair too, where his and Timmy's project (frog dissecting) was almost serious science compared to the 17 "which makes a higher fountain - a mentos in classic coke or a mentos in diet coke" (should that be "mento'?). My favourite science fair comment was the two girls who decided to test their teachers' blood pressure throughout the day as they dealt with various classes (classic experiment anyway!) - "Mr X broke the tape, so we had to count him as "dead" for the rest of the experiment"

The unfortunate concomitant of this "result" was that this left my daughter alone with them for several hours.

* meaning good result - not sure how widespread "result!" is as an expression.

Hi. I seem to have picked up one of those whatchamacallits... You know, you end up going to the place, with the high ceiling, sometimes blue, sometimes black, sometimes bright and sometimes dark, with a lot of moving things and a lot of green stuff... You know... One of those whatchamacallits...
In heaven... Everything is fine, in heaven... Everything is fine, in heaven... Everything is fine... You got your things, and I've got mine.

But my Tad ("Tadcu" to the kids, pronounced "Tad-Key", Welsh for Grandad) has such a capacity for making stuff up in the middle of a discussion, nay, sentence, that he would blow away all but the most deranged/deliberately provocative CC posters.

Sometimes. what he says actually has some basis in fact. And the most frustrating thing is that sometimes, if the latest thing he says actually is even tangentially factually, I'd be fascinated. But you never know if it's made up from whole cloth or thin air.

If it weren't for the fact that he was thus when he was half his current age, I'd conclude that senility was setting in.

A few examples from the last twenty-four hours:

"Tony Blair started more wars in his ten years than any other British Prime Minister in History"

"80% of the students at Cardiff University are Chinese. Yes, I said 80%"

"The last time your mother and I got on the Tube {London Underground} we were the only white people there"

"All the car and steel industry in Britain is owned by Indians"

"Barbara Castle was a wonderful woman. She hated Dockies. I was her bodyguard for a day**. She was only this tall. She had a party when she knew she was dying, and the only person she didn't invite was Tony Blair."

I must say that I found your comments quite interesting, jones. I'm still not quite sure what to make of them, but very interesting.

keep watching. tad has been more restrained today, possibly due to jet lag, and his thoughts have turned to memories of times long gone. This makes them mellower, i.e., he doesn't look like he's about to explode. Some of his reminiscences today have actually been quite interesting. Few have actually offended me.

Of course, I still don't know how true his stories are.

In the past, I have sat and watched a TV program with him, and them (within minutes) heard him tell someone else what the program was about.

Sometimes you'd have thought he'd been watching a different channel. And, in a sense, he was - his own internal one.

Here's a few gems of statements from the past...

"All men comb their hair back"

"If you walk along with your coat undone you might as well be an Italian"

"All corner shops in Wales are owned by Chinese people"

"More people die on Snowdon every year than in all the other mountains in Europe."

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves not posting in such a wonderful thread. Since no one else is posting I shall award Jonesthecurl with this banana.

By the way, I just graduated. Frikn awesome to be done with High School forever. Now for those of you thinking to yourself "Hey if he just graduated, why is he here?" Well the answer is I just came back from a dinner (had some of the best halibut ever) to get ready for a party and since I was here I thought I might as well visit.

Wolfie, thank you for the banana. I have plans for it involving coconut milk, ocean perch and thai spices.

Let me however tell you of an instance in which what Tad says would be fascinating if true - but of course I never have any idea whether his statements are based in fact...

I've mentioned my Uncle Pete in other posts. He served in the German army in WWii, and married my aunt after a spell as a POW.

Now, Tad informs me ( I have no reason to disbelieve this next bit) that he was drafted at the age of 16, (as the Germans became increasingly desperate for men) and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge.

Yesterday, he also told me (and this is the new information which, if true, is fascinating)that Peter's brother had a cleft palate - and was sterilized by the Nazi's because this made him (a) not a proper Aryan, and (b) not enough of a deviant to execute out-of-hand.

Peter only found out that his brother had committed suicide as a result of this shortly before his own death (previously Peter had apparently believed that this was just one of those people who'd mysteriously disappeared in the war years, presumably prey to some stray bullet or bomb)

That is interesting. both of my grandparents served in the war. One as a navy officer out in the pacific and the other I believe had something to do with the fighter planes but I don't think he actually flew them. The one who served in the navy I believe was seriously injured during a minor battle in 1943 and was sent home. The other one served from 1941 until the end of the war.

Tad was a "desert rat", and fought both at Alemein and Monte Cassino, as well as many less-well-known conflicts.

My Mum is a few years younger, and didn't join up until quite late in the war. She was in London during the Blitz, however and thus not exactly safe. One night she didn't attend the dance she normally went to, and the dance hall was bombed and all her friends killed.

Wow that sucks. Yeah, I think my grandfather (the one who got injured) fought at Midway, which is kind of cool. My other grandfather used to tell me that he was there for both D-day and the Battle of the Bulge but I later found out that he wasn't there for either.

Back to the slightly earlier Tad arc (yes, I'm obsessed with them - they're here at the moment).

I got a new TV delivered today, the smallest plasma (37") I could find. I wanted quality, but not to dominate the room.

After watching for about an hour and a half, Tad says
"These Americans! They do nothing than bloody well eat!"

It being my TV and there being no kids home yet, it was of course tuned to the Food Channel...
