The one who served in the navy I believe was seriously injured during a minor battle in 1943 and was sent home. The other one served from 1941 until the end of the war.

Tad was a "desert rat", and fought both at Alemein and Monte Cassino, as well as many less-well-known conflicts.
My Mum is a few years younger, and didn't join up until quite late in the war. She was in London during the Blitz, however and thus not exactly safe. One night she didn't attend the dance she normally went to, and the dance hall was bombed and all her friends killed.
