The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News Mystery Killer Mafia is based on an interesting premise. At the beginning, nobody knows if they are a serial killer, but everyone has to target someone every night anyways. Should be interesting to find out who can figure out who is scum before the SKer finishes off town.Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements. Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 This issue, we discuss a passive action role. The Hammerer What is It? The Hammerer is a role that automatically lynches a person who is one vote away from being lynched unless the hammerer himself is already voting for the person. This does not show up on the vote count, and if the hammerer is voting for another person, the vote is not moved on the vote count. Usually will be denoted by "The Hammerer" as the lynching vote.Example Bob is the Hammerer. Alice is one vote away from being lynched and Bob is voting for Jack. Alice is automatically lynched but the vote count still shows Bob voting for Jack. How to Play this Role The Hammerer is usually a Mfia role. Depending on the mod, the Hammerer may have control over his ability and PM the mod to secretly move the vote. If discovered, the Hammerer can usually be negated by not putting people at L-1 before claiming. It can also help narrow down who the Hammerer is, if the wagon reaches L-1 and there is not an automatic lynch. This may be useful should the hammerer survive until the late game when the player pool is small enough to determine the likely suspects.
It's been a long stint for me as head of the Clan Team for the dispatch team, but it's finally time for me to call curtains on my efforts with the executive board of this fine Newsletter, as I move on to concentrate on the Clan Director responsibilities that have fallen upon my still slender shoulders.

Leehar Clan Executive TLO comes to the Clan World! by Swifte show
This week we had an exciting and intriguing development in the clan world - the announcement of TLO V: Clan edition! This event is brand new to the clan area, but not to CC, and brings a whole new kind of event to our little piece of CC paradise. First, a little bit about TLO. TLO, or 'Team League Officers', has in recent years been a large-team (greater than 4 players) event. Each week comprised of a mix of single, doubles, triples, and quads games between competing teams. A wide variety of maps and settings were pre-selected each round by the organizer, Lindax, but responsibility for assigning players to games fell on each team's captain each round. The tournament was round robin, with each squad playing every other squad once on a set of maps, with point values awarded equal to the number of players per team for each game. It's been a very successful and distinguished event within the tournament world for several years, largely because of the quality of competition and the need to display ability on a wide range of maps, team sizes and settings. Because of being a large-team tournament, TLO has attracted many teams from the clan world in the past. Players from Generation One won the original TLO tournament, while two different teams from TOFU have won the last 3 events. How do you take a premier tournament experience and adapt it for the clan scene? Here's a brief overview of the format of TLO V: Clan Edition.• Instead of round-robin, a bracket format will be used. The draw for the bracket will be entirely random . • Each round will consist of 15 games - 9 games will be chosen by Lindax (including maps/players/settings) and will be used for all matches in that round. Each team will also submit 3 home maps of their choosing. Home maps can only be used once per round, and twice per tournament. • In a clan world first, matches will be handicapped using the ratings from the F400. Lindax shows the calculation in detail here , but for a rough idea of the handicap, if the PACK (ranked #4) were to play MYTH (#14) PACK would need to win 2 more games than MYTH to win the match. To be eligible for this event, your clan must have been competitive since prior to Jan 1, 2011, have played at least 4 wars from 2011 to 2012 (at least 1 in each year), and be listed on the F400. Personally, I'm excited to see how this event plays out, it certainly brings something brand new to the Clan area of CC. Clan League shows us time and again that in smaller match-ups, anything can happen, and leveling the playing field further by taking away a large element of control over home maps and adding a handicap could make this one of the toughest events we've ever seen! Is your clan prepared to do battle with a handicap, and picking only 20% of the maps/settings to be used in the skirmish, in a randomized bracket? Jump in to the action, or learn more information here: TLO V .
What Keeps Your Clan Together? by The Voice show: Part I
The fast and loose world of clans has forced clan leaders (CLs) past and present to improvise with regard to their retention strategies. With that in mind, I presented leaders with three multiple choice questions to gauge what measures they believe must be taken to keep a clan united and therefore competitive. Responses were so great, I have broken this article into 3 segments. First up: What keeps your clan together? CLs were asked to pick 2 answers from the following choices: Camaraderie The Competition A Niche in the Clan World New challenges Active, Aggressive Recruitment Other – Please explainCamaraderie [Annihilating the enemy as one, big family] It may come as no surprise that nearly all CLs who responded see camaraderie as one of the most important ingredients. What did surprise me were the differences in the examples some leaders gave. In addition to their active warring lifestyle, TNC leaders have their clan engaged in mafia and other forum games. For Gunn217, the foundation for the Pig Renters clan was a preexisting friendship that had been built in the real life and transferred electronically. “It makes it easy to stay together when the leadership know each other outside of CC. We started playing together so we could stay in touch and it has done wonders for our friendships. Berger and I talk on the phone every week to talk CC. To the chagrin of our wives, we've never been closer.”The Competition [We’re the best/goofiest/drunkest/sexiest/chattiest/classiest] Competitions are the lifeblood of the clan community. It makes perfect sense that the opportunity to make a mark in Clan History has many leaders and players alike salivating. Without competition, out goes the “eagerness to improve,” as Benga puts it. Competition also has a way of strengthening the bond between clanmates. Gunn217 says, “When we are in a close war that is coming down to the wire our forum explodes with activity and each of us encourage the others to fight hard and work together.”Like-mindedness [It’s like we can finish each other’s…] I regret overlooking like-mindedness when preparing the choices because it seems many clan leaders are of the same mind when it comes to its importance. Genoke (ATLANTIS) cites his clan’s desire to keep the discussion friendly and help each other, while the inception of The Fallen can be traced to clanmates possessing a similar frame of mind. According to IcePack, “Fallen started when we realized there was a group of players who wanted a very active, talkative group who were not competing at the level we wanted to see."A Niche in the Clan World [Now, You’re Speaking My Language] Some competitive clans can offer something unique to the clan scene. This is especially true with foreign language clans like Les Hussards du Dragon, Otpisani, and de Veroveraars Der Lage Landen. Speaking the same language can be highly advantageous; as QuikSilver from LHHD puts it, “It's easier for us to be understood in game chat. We don't take time trying to translate what we meant to say.” Other clan niches helped shape FISO and Mythology. “What keeps us together is what brought us together in the first place,” Vid_FISO says. “FISO stands for Fantasy and Interactive Sports Online, a UK based website that has been in existence for over 13 years.” Being a fan of Mythology is what brought the majority of us together in the first place on CC,” says Peantusdad, “But truthfully, since we became a fully competitive clan a couple of years ago, our focus has been much more along the lines of adding and building members/teams that are solid players, not just fans of mythology.Communication [We need to touch base on All Your Base] Chatter is an essential way to remain competitive in games and stay present on the forums. Utilization of the forum and communication play an essential role. For Venimus, Vidimus, Vicimus, the clan forums provide a critical tool for keeping in close communication, whereas members of The Fallen often take the conversation outside of CC, utilizing both Skype and texting. Stay tuned for my next question in the series!

Hello again my friends, and welcome to your favorite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments! DaveH once again brings us his Tournament Tips and a report on the current status of the TPA. Animaniacs brings us a special edition of Join This? Or Not!
Dukasaur Tournament Executive Tournament Tips by DaveH show: Creating tables from Excel
I have yet to find an easy way of creating a table in a tournament thread. For instance if you want a league table with name, played, won, lost etc. that you have in Excel, you either have to take a picture of the formatted table and upload it, or you can use Challonge or other suitable internet sites to keep track of results. The problem in CC is that multiple spaces are ignored, so all the table data is concatenated. To try and compensate for this I have written the following software that creates a table. OK - it is not wonderful, as the different characters have unequal spacing, but it is readable and quicker to transfer from Excel to your thread than via a photo. The routine allows you to specify the starting and finishing rows and columns of your table and then includes underlines (_) to space out the different columns according to the length of the text in them. Were the text of equal spacing (as say teletext font) then it would be perfectly in line, but as the font is not of equal spacing, it does wave about a bit! Further explanations in the following routine:Code: Select all Sub FormLines() ' ' FormLines recorded 12/12/2012 by DaveH ' ' specify the starting and finishing rows and columns of the table Dim iRowStart As Integer Dim iRowFinish As Integer Dim iColStart As Integer Dim iColFinish As Integer Dim iLength(100) As Integer 'to hold the max text length in each column ' allow input of the 4 variables iRowStart = InputBox("Enter the Starting Row Number:") iRowFinish = InputBox("Enter the Finishing Row Number:") iColStart = InputBox("Enter the Starting Column Number:") iColFinish = InputBox("Enter the Finishing Column Number:") 'scan down for the longest name in each column For j = iColStart To iColFinish For i = iRowStart To iRowFinish - 1 'clear cell at start If i = iRowStart Then Cells(i, iColFinish + 2).Value = "" iLength(j) = 0 End If 'Find the longest word a = Cells(i, j).Value b = Cells(i + 1, j).Value If Len(b) > iLength(j) Then iLength(j) = Len(b) If Len(a) >= Len(b) Then If Len(a) > iLength(j) Then iLength(j) = Len(a) End If Next i Next j 'include the required number of underlines For i = iRowStart To iRowFinish For k = iColStart To iColFinish Cells(i, iColFinish + 2).Value = (Cells(i, iColFinish + 2).Value) & (Cells(i, k).Value) l = 0 If k <> iColFinish Then While Len(Cells(i, k).Value) + l < iLength(k) + 2 Cells(i, iColFinish + 2).Value = (Cells(i, iColFinish + 2).Value) & "_" l = l + 1 Wend End If Next k Next i End Sub

And now for our regular look at a selection of the tournaments in sign-ups. I'm sad to say that I honestly can't think of anything else creative to say here, so yea... please bear with me! Oceania Nations Cup by JohnAarson - Freemium Friendly! Following Disney Pixar's recent announcement of Finding Dory , sequel to Finding Nemo, it's only natural for a little Australian flavour to be added to the mix (P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney) . This tournament features some varied game styles en route to the finals. Representing a country or dependency within the Oceanic region, you will battle against others in an 8-player game, a mini 1v1 league, and finally a 4-player final. So here's hoping you can just keep swimming, just keep swimming, all the way to the end of the tournament.Fatal 4way by andyf23 - Freemium Friendly! The Chinese may believe that 4 is an inauspicious number (because the Chinese words for '4' and 'die' sound similar), but you can prove superstition wrong by joining, and hopefully, winning this tournament. Play in 4-player games, and be the first to reach 4 wins in the finals to take home the trophy. Such a feat certainly shouldn't take you 4ever! I regret to inform you that coming in 4th place will not get you anything though...DISCLAIMER: I may not believe in Chinese superstition, but those who doubt the dice gods that be, on CC, shall certainly perish! A home advantage: Canada by waauw - Premium Only. This small and simple tournament takes the often-used 'home map' concept and gives it an added twist - lose once on your home map, and the privilege of using it as your home map is immediately revoked. That is, of course, if you still manage to make it to the next round in the first place. You'll certainly have to pick a home map on which you can be sure to win consistently, if you want to retain that advantage!Random Terminator Tournament [TPA3] by Darin44 - Premium Only. If you haven't already taken part in one of these TPA3 tournaments, it's never too late to hop in on the fun! And if Terminator games just happen to be your thing, then why not do so with this tournament that features a classic format? You just need to be the top half of the pack in your group in to make it through the first 3 rounds of the tournament, till the finals where you have to emerge with the most number of kills overall. Beware though: the games all take place on Random maps, so you'll never know what's going to be thrown your way! You'd better be on your toes all the way!The Great Community Map Project Finally, in conjunction with the Great Community Map Project event, a series of fast and furious tournaments have been running, and will be continuing regularly in the near future. So do keep a look out for these tournaments! The fourth installment is currently taking sign-ups over here .Note : Players who participate in the tournaments as well as the Great Community Map Project forum thread will stand a chance to win a General Achievement Medal ! These are my picks, but if you don't like any of these go to the Create/Join a Tournament or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the many others waiting to be filled. If you're craving tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum. You can be playing very quickly after signing up as a reserve. A new map by Seamus76 , Three Kingdoms of China , begs the question to be asked before it can be played, What is the best way to play this map? Click image to enlarge. Armandolas wrote: The best way to play it is, to do the unexpected and attack the unprepared
skychaser wrote: Well. I play mainly and almost exclusively at foggy escalating games so my opinion may be a little biased but still i will put my coin here. First you should know. There are two easy takeable bonuses plus the cities. The cities are neutrals so it may be a good option taking them. The drawback is having to reinforce it so you should think it over, is not always that profitable. You should take Liang or Bei Ping when you have 2 pieces there or of you deployed and got lucky dice so you can have a bonus at most at the third round. If someone would fight over it then the best is leaving them fight over it and not to bother. Kingdom of Shu-Han have virtually no bonuses so it's a good place to take refuge. The Kingdom of Wu have a bonus region called Jiao, it's good if you happen to have 3 or more regions there by sheer luck. Otherwise you may take it if people are fighting over another region and it's left as an open farmin space to you. However you must be carefull not to waste troops. Sometimes is easier just going for cards at easier places. Apart from it you just have to wait for the right momentum and use your not map related strategy for the victory. ============= Apart from what I just said. Many of these hard bonuses may be takeable if you're playing with a little number of people. You may even take a +3 bonus at the endgame or if you are playing with 4 or less people at the table. Oh. I think "Do the unexpected, attack the unprepared" is attributed to Sun Tzu rather than Zughe Liang. It's a common catchphrase.
Seamus76 wrote: Wow, this is an amazing analysis of the map. Really cool. In everything I found when researching the map I only found Zhuge as being attributed to the quote. Now, in The Art of War, Sun Tzu does say "Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected." But these are two different quotes. Feel free to post this in the map thread as there may be others who can confirm one way or the other.
skychaser wrote: Well. I thought the phare was attributed to Sun Zi since he was called to defeat the Shu Kingdom by WU. That time is believed that Sun Tzu having lesser armies would wait and reinforce. Thus he attacked and conquered the territory and using surprise after surprise he was able to defeat Shu at his time. I guess one can see it from the Sun Tzu video frou the History Channel. If he existed. Of course At the age of Three Kingdoms you can see that everyone knew the concept. Cao Cao used this tactic a lot. He defeated Yuan Shao by attacking unexpectedly his food storage and won a war with 1/10th soldiers for example. Even the defeat to Cao Cao would be attibuted to the surprise attack with fire. Cao Cao misjudged the climate by estimating the wind from that time of the year would not blow from south to north. Wu could not defeat Cao if not for the "surprise wind". So the frase may be from Zhuge Liang. the book despict him as a a god of the strategy, but the concept was around long before him.
