I've always found the maps on conquer club to be something special. When I first arrived to the site, I didn't realize that RISK could be played on so many maps, and they were are pretty good looking at the time too. So when I started looking around in the forums, the first place I went to was the Foundry, because GD seemed, and still seems, like a place where only "veteran" players who have been around since way back when in terms of this site go. I liked the process that maps have to go through, that people have lots of input on what they want to play, and how it all led to quality maps being produced.

So yeah, I was pretty much awe-struck at the things going on here.

when I joined, I mainly just played the maps. Then I noticed after a little while that there were maps that would come out with the new tags on them, and I wondered where the maps were coming from. Thats when I first wandered into the forums, saw the map foundry, and decided to look around. My initial thoughts were, so this is where the maps come from! I wonder if I can make one?, So I started looking around and after a while figured out how to make maps, and since then ive been hooked :)

"This...is...awesome."
I'm not sure I'd still be here a year later if it weren't for the Foundry.

I've always wondered where mapmakers get their game play information from. Some new maps come out and play brilliantly on all kinds of settings (like Rail Europe), while others (like New World, Das Schloss, Battle For Iraq) are clearly designed with one style in mind (4-8 players, 2 player/team, flat rate/no cards, resp.) and end up atrocious in other styles (lopsided first player victories, stalemates, too many dead ends). When I look through map discussion threads, it's good that you're trying to cover game play early, but most of the changes suggested are bonuses or aesthetic. Then the players who discuss things don't seem to play a lot of games (I suppose they're busy making maps ;)), so it would probably help a lot to call in some people who play a variety of styles to give ideas of how maps will play out. At the very least, you'd avoid another Das Schloss recall.

When I saw 'Chinese Checkers', 'King of the Mountains', and 'U.S. Senate' come out, I thought making a map would be a cool thing to do. I read all the rules, regulations, how to threads, and even some developing map threads before I posted (very strange way to do it, I know) and started my first map. It was a very horrible map in the Caribbean, but it eventually became the map known as 'Caribbean Islands'.

Hey, I love King of the Mountains, it's one of my personal favorites! Punk. But Chinese Checkers can get taken out behind the shed and shot.

Lol, to each their own. I think Chinese Checkers is a great map for new recruits. I loved that map when I first started.

I first came to the foundry just to see the new maps being made.
I didn't comment.... Just looked around.
Good times back then.

Definitely "what the heck is going on.. i am lost"

but with a little perseverance, it is a welcoming (in the main) and fascinating place which buzzes with ideas.

My first impression entering the foundry was:
Wow there is a lot of people talking in there, I can't read all that stuff is that really for me?
De gueules à la tour d'argent ouverte, crénelée de trois pièces, sommée d'un donjon ajouré, crénelé de deux pièces
Gules an open tower silver, crenellated three parts, topped by a apertured turret, crenellated two parts
