Math question: adding troops

I can't figure out how to Google this, so I'm hoping someone here is better at math than I am.

If my opponent is adding X troops per turn, and I am adding Y troops per turn (where Y > X), how long will it take before I have 3 times my opponent's troop number?

How long do you imagine a turn lasts?

In my mind, I'm always a real nation-state engaged in a life-or-death war, akin to the Wars of the Roses or the Hundred Years War. When I reconquer a lost territory, the citizens rejoice at their liberation (there are probably some anti-collaborator pogroms, too, but there are some things it's ...

Re: Strategy for large, no spoils, standard, classic

Those are hard settings, on a hard map. Too many players, too few bonuses.

About all you can do is turtle, don't make anyone mad, and wait for someone to make a mistake. At first I thought that you should not be turtling in the middle of Asia: too many enemies around you. On the other hand, your ...

Re: Why does the little guy do it?

Could be that the #3 player has the least to lose. If #1 and #2 are playing logically, then neither will want to hit back too hard, for fear of upsetting the balance. And if they do, well, he's already losing, so he just gets eliminated earlier. So if they respond in a restrained manner, there's a ...

Re: Strategy guide for newbies like me who really suck?

Alternatively, find a mentor. There's a thread around somewhere, though it may be defunct. Or just find a player who seems to know what they're doing (like maybe one of those guys who beat you) and ask them for advice. PM me if you want.

How to play Middle Ages map

I always enjoy this map (partly because I just like the middle ages) but I've never had much success on it. It seems like it requires a unique strategy that I haven't discovered yet.

What I do know is:

It's critical to keep your palace defended, either itself or at the Square.
It's usually not ...

Re: Land locked units

In all of these situations, (and probably others that I haven't mentioned), leaving all your troops on your borders is an invitation to have large numbers of your troops killed. Sometimes that's necessary, especially in 1v1, escalating, non-fog or non-trench games, but in many situations land ...

Re: Can someone help me with my math

You get a maximum of 10 for a set, but a minimum of 4: so all that work to cash in, and you may only get 4 from it. If it makes sense to take a 1-troop territory, I'll do it for spoils. But often it makes sense to wait patiently: if attacking might antagonize another player; if taking the territory ...

Re: Flat Rate or Escalating

Escalating games tend to be fast, since the cards will be decisive. I find that strategy is more important in flat rate, but I've also seen arguments from escalating opponents that strategy is important there too. Your mileage may vary, but I prefer flat rate myself. It does sometimes lead to ...

Re: What do you do when you first start playing...

What to do when you lose your first game? Go play your second! Expect to lose the first couple of games, but pay attention to the winning strategies and learn from them. That's where playing the higher-ranked players is a good idea: I've never seen them target newbies per se, so don't be afraid of ...

Re: BOB not working for me (but is for others)

Hmmm, I'm on 5.2.6 now and I still have the "initializing..." problem. Chrome, Tampermonkey, Windows 7 x64.

EDIT: Right after I posted this (naturally), I saw that BOTH 5.2.4 and 5.2.6 were installed. Disabled the former and everything is working now.

Re: Newbies ----> Flame On

Sorry you had a bad experience: assassin games are hard to grasp at first. Gameplay is a lot different from the other types, because gaining power and territory is much less important (because it becomes important to protect everyone but your target). And, you might've had some less-than-patient ...

Re: Luck...

But if you are attacking a fortified position and must win it, you should wait for 2x or something close to that.

If you MUST win the assault I don't get why you would wait for 2x the troops? IE if your up and have a 25 v 20 to take out a player with 5 cards would you not try that assault? If ...

Re: Luck...

2x is a rule of thumb, meaning there are lots of exceptions. As macbone pointed out, the OP has been doing lots of attacks where the odds of success were way out of his favor, so he needs to understand that winning battles consistently requires significantly more troops than the defender. Thus the ...

Re: Luck...

See everything that macbone said. My rule-of-thumb is that I need twice as many attackers as defenders to expect to win. If I remember correctly, the defender advantage goes down with the number of troops involved, though, so you are more likely to win a 100 v 100 battle than a 10 v 10. In any case ...

Mistakes happen in real war, too. Adjust your thinking to the new strategic situation and make the best of it.

You'll never achieve never making a mistake, but to minimize this, I use the Overlord strategy: lots and lots of planning. If I have a complicated move in mind that will either win or ...

Re: Sportsmanship vs stabbing your Allies

You're quite right that one is not required to respect a truce, but certainly encouraged. I would just shrug and play around this backstabber, but I would certainly give him a poor rating when the game is over: I think there's a tag for backstabber.

These games are very like real international ...

Re: team flat rate

There are good arguments both ways: the only reason to wait until 5 is so that you have 3 on the following turn (assuming you take a territory, of course). My thought is that you get your troops and may have another set immediately, back to back (which could be very helpful if your situation ...

Re: Final Three Strategy

You're in for a long game, most likely.

First, abandon any idea of fighting a two-front war. You have only a small edge over the others: just enough to make them fear you but not enough to dominate. Focusing on one while temporarily ignoring the other also does not usually work, as you've ...
