How solo is solo?

I can think of a lot of great guitar riffs I like, but none of them are pure solos, more like "lead-guitar-dominated passages with some accompaniment."

If you'll allow those, these are some greats I love:
Lazy -- Deep Purple
War Pigs -- Black Sabbath
Renegade -- Styx
La Villa Strangiato -- Rush
Cortez the Killer -- Neil Young

Actually, the whole term "solo" is a bit loosely defined anyway, given that most are still accompanied by other instruments. Take Mike McCready's "solo" on Pearl Jam's Alive. The whole band is still playing while McCready just soars. So yeah, anything like that is cool. Unless it's a drum solo, where literally the drummer is the only one going, then like I say, you'll nearly always have others jamming along, it's just one instrument takes liberty to do whatever they want.

Bollocks.

hmm...that's a good question... :-k
off the top of my head, in no particular order :
5 vs 7 - the hellacopters
eruption - van halen
red house - jimi hendrix
immortality - pearl jam(a possible Neil young ripoff)
rebel sodville - marcy playground(a total Neil young ripoff)
left hand path - entombed(the last one, after the "twinkly" part)
Neil young - "dead man" theme
and lastly, anything off obituarys' cause of death, dinosaur jrs' where you been or niles' in their darkened shrines albums, respectively.

The guitar riff on Yellow Ledbetter is my favorite; probably not a solo.

I'm not a big Pearl Jam fan, but yeah, I like that riff. It's very Jimi-esque, it reminds me of Little Wing, probably my favorite Jimi song.

I'm not a big fan of anything after Vitalogy. Too folksy for me.

The Rival Sons have a guitarist with some pretty good solos.

I also enjoy most of Tom Morello's solos (if you could even call them that). GNR also good (obvs).
