I have no idea how good this info from snopes is.
I do know black people were owning slaves in africa for a long time so there is some truth to snopes on this, the barbary wars sorta put a crimp in black people(Moslems) owning slaves, especially white slaves.

Just thought this interesting.

Free blacks owned slaves in a much higher percentage than whites. They probably only did it to keep them safe though lol.

I doubt you'll get any replies to this thread armati. They don't like facts like this here. Maybe a couple of posts calling you x Nazi but debate no.

One of the things which I discovered when in Ghana was that yes, the local tribes had traditionally engaged in slavery, it was the main reason for warfare (winner gets the enemy as slaves), but the treatment of those slaves was nothing like as vicious as the European treatment of African slaves. Many slaves were sold to the Europeans by other tribes, but whether they realised how different the treatment would be, I don't know.

Another fact for your list: according to my "History of Ghana", most slaves went to South America, not North.

These aren't "facts about slavery they don't want you to know". Half of these are universally known facts. Everybody who's ever held even a single book on african history knows this.

Might depend on which part of Africa you're talking about. The Congo basin for instance was used to much worse conditions than those seen in the western world. Cannibalism was an everyday occurence until the early 20th century.

I like how you capitalized 'The' Congo, as in that it's the one and only Congo, as opposed to the french Congo Brazzaville.

a) Who is the "they" in the thread title? The evil conspiracy that seeks to remind Americans of the recent history of slave chattel in our country, including a war fought to defend that institution? An evil conspiracy, to say the least.

b) I looked up that William Edison asshole. He owned 53 slaves per Wikipedia. While that is 53 more slaves than he should have owned, I have a hard time believing that there weren't worse people in the great state of North Carolina in 1860. Also fun fact he was a major booster of the Confederacy, as they obviously represented his interests well, being a slave owner himself.

c) The "black people owned slaves 2" defense is a really bad one. The actions of the Barbary States (which we totally learn about in school) don't excuse the horrors of slavery in the US.

Oh Bern! I do think you made personal growth today. This is the first time I ever heard you speak positively about France. Now, of course I agree Leopold II is a brutal monster. He's widely regarded as the greatest stain on our Belgian history, a bit like your american genocide of the indians.

And I actually somewhat concur that the creation of Belgium was a mistake.

One of the problems of the discussion of slavery in the United States is the basic underlying situation with slavery itself. Prior to the Civil War, slavery was, for all practical purposes, CRAP. It was a byproduct of an agricultural economy; an economy that relied mostly on exports. It’s a barely sustainable model for a colony, since agriculture is basically a raw material that can be shipped to the home country, but even then it flat out sucks for long term economic development.

As a result, most of the Founding Fathers in the agricultural south tended to go massively into debt the moment that the export market shut down and the relatively short shelf life agriculture started to rot away. Of all the Founding Fathers, only Washington was the exception because he grew grain and when the market died he merely turned his grain into long shelf life booze. Since slaves were “property” a landowner faced with debt due to lack of exports was forced to “sell” his “property” to repay his debts. Ironically, the number one stupid crop for long term investment at the time was tobacco; the biggest crop in the southern colonies and later states at the time.

It was not until the invention of the cotton gin that an agricultural profit base could be firmly established. By then the “peculiar institution” was dying of its own accord. It was only the firm insistence of the “Fire Eaters” to restart the slave trade against all international norms at the time that we get the build up to the Civil War.

All of this is merely a backdrop to the larger problem that everyone practically speaking was a racist. Even in the non slavery north bigotry and segregation was the norm. It is this bigotry, which, frankly, can even be seen in Lincoln himself, which allowed the drive to keep the “peculiar institution” alive and kicking. In the end, all these horrid types of “American Style” slavery stem from superiority complexes imposing the will of the superior upon the inferior. America, however, had this attitude in spades. It was so extreme that when the Nazi’s studied the American segregation laws to determine their application towards the Jewish influence in their gene pool, they considered it too extreme because it would have isolated the German pure population to only a small percentage of the overall population. (And probably would have eliminated the very people trying to make the laws in the first place.)
