Though if Hong Kongers continue to lose their rights and freedoms, then their lives aren’t really their own anymore.

I could also argue that the oppression pressed by the Chinese Gov’t is official and legal and driven by the government; whereas what’s happening in the US is systemic but not legal or officially supported by the gov’t.

I don’t think the Federal Gov’t should send in troops. I think the Governor’s are capable of calling up the National Guard if/when they feel it’s necessary. I think Trump’s rhetoric is only inflaming the situation.

What happened to George Floyd is despicable and should be condemned by every sane individual. This is yet another clear cut case of a long string of f*ck ups by the police department as a whole and should be overhauled.

The militarized police response each time riots like this have happened (the one criticized by Amnesty International) is the one routinely employed by the US Government in situations like this.

The police officer who has been arrested for this murder has repeatedly been involved in allegations of brutality, abuse and in some instances has shot unarmed minorities without being punished (the dozen or so times his actions weren't filmed and distributed all over the internet).

No --- this is a combination of society's crust being currently unemployed and idle, combined with an unseasonably warm summer.

The riots of June to July 1967 and April 1968 were significantly more serious in the U.S. The death count and property destruction were much greater, plus they were more notable since we had a less than 4% unemployment rate and firm control of a segment of the male population through conscription.

There will be a continuation of rioting through September 3. By that point, the $2500/month in additional unemployment bonuses will have been over for a month, the market will be back up close to 30K which will have spurred hiring, and weather will start cooling.

Priority #1 in Trump's second term will be to raise a French-style Gendarmerie under federal control that can be used to crush future uprisings at an embryonic phase, instead of our current approach of waiting until they get large and then relying on slow-to-mobilize state military forces to do something.
