Ragnar Danneskjold is the shiz, man. He only gets cooler as the story goes on. Mouch=Frank in his position in society, but Obama in his ideology. Frank is closer to James Taggart in his ideology, IMHO. But you don't know James yet... not really.

The movie comes to wherever there is a demand for it. The movie has not been advertised. People have to vocally demand it otherwise it won't be shown. I don't know what is going on with that except opening weekend 299 theaters? Maybe they are just seeing how it sill stand all by itself without all the hollywood BS? I wouldn't put it past the movie. It's running on pure demand.

Aren't there over 20,000 theaters in USA?
Atlas Shrugged Domestic Total as of May. 1, 2011: $3,947,827

I think you need to change your weeks or get the right numbers. All I will say is I am glad to see you using the free market concepts to prove a point

Haha, a movie with a smaller production budget than most movies have in their advertisement budget and Greecepwns won't shut the hell up over it not making money. IT'S AN INDEPENDENT FILM, THESE HARDLY EVER MAKE MONEY.

okay I'm getting between 6,000 and 10,000 theaters in the USA.

300 theaters out of 6,000 is 5%.......omgfailomgfail and even less % if you go with 10,000. You watch the number of theaters will grow as this is a different kind of movie and might be around for a while, and then you got DVD's and world Box office. I hope they do something extremely clever here, even if they do have Hollywood doing everything they can to spoil this movie. The starring actress has already said many people in Hollywood will not even talk to her anymore for doing this movie. It's totally worth it at least as an introduction the novels ideas.

Yeah well if you look at the comment I made a page or two ago about the guy complaining that liberals in Hollywood wouldn't give him a 50 million budget, you'd see that he clearly didn't deserve one and the free market won out here.

I'll watch it whenever I can find a torrent before I make final judgement.

Greece, we have to figure these numbers out...

Total Grosses Domestic: $3,947,827
Domestic Summary Opening Weekend: $1,686,347

It's been out for 3 weeks. Opening weekend what 1.7 mil. The next 2 weeks are 2.3 mil more, making the average after the opening week 1.15 mil, which seems strong for something opening to 1.7. More weeks will roll by, more millions will come in.

Source? Sorry but maybe your numbers include the recent weekend.

Atlas Shrugged Producer: "Critics: You Won"

"Atlas Shrugged" was the top-grossing limited release in its opening weekend, generating $1.7 million on 299 screens and earning a respectable $5,640 per screen. But the the box office dropped off 47% in the film's second week in release even as "Atlas Shrugged" expanded to 425 screens, and the movie seemed to hold little appeal for audiences beyond the core group of Rand fans to whom it was marketed."

It goes on to say later that it has made $3.1 million (as of April 26 I believe)

Let's not forget that final production cost will be around $25 million.
(...and before you blow a nut, that figure comes from Producer John Aglialoro and the movie website)

Ah the irony that the film championing the ideals of free market capitalism and anti-government sentiment, the film darling of the Tea Party movement, might have trouble balancing it's own budget.

I say, the public shrugged.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480239/business

Budget: $15,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend: $1,686,347 (USA) (17 April 2011) (299 Screens)
Gross: $3,096,815 (USA) (24 April 2011)

Rule of thumb is to add at least 33% to estimated budget to account for marketing and promotion costs. So, to break even, the film needs to make 20,000,000. Odds are strongly against that happening at this point, since the expansion in screens doesn't seem to be yielding a proportionally increasing gross.

LOL Phatsco, does it break your heart to be told by the free market that the ideas you've glommed from Ayn Rand are stupid?

EDIT: oh hey, what do you know. I start reading that LA Times article and in the second paragraph they mention the 20 mil figure.

Producers often publicly inflate estimated costs, to prepare to gyp their actors and crew and any other investor that was awarded points in lieu of salary. Look up the scandal surrounding Tim Burton's Batman, concerning paying out the windfall points. I think a book may have even been written about it.

I'm sure the real cost of the film is closer to 20 than 25.

Yes. I am well aware of Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy. Like I said, I am not into Chicago School of Economic pornography.

Why do you label Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged as "Chicago School of Economic pornography"?

Is he talking about Chicago style politics? I've heard that phrase bandied about like crazy during the last three years.
