I can understand so many people spelling "your" when they meant "you're" or "were" instead of "we're" because I'm not a total grammer/spelling nazi, but come on folks, post after post I read "loose" (in some cases 3 or 4 times in one post!) and I think Webster is going to change the definition just to accommodate all the misspellers on this site!

loose, lose, people can tell which one you mean. And since the purpose of writing it to communicate, this shows that spelling is not important. Grammar is not important either. Studying a language that you already know how to speak is a waste of time. Majoring in english is for people who are not smart enough to major in subjects that actually matter.

I do think perhaps you are overlooking authors, editors, advertisers, comedians, writers of shows and such, and maybe even politicians, where an english degree certainly has helped them quite a bit...and I don't think intelligence was a question for many...except the politicians of course.

True, nothing screams capable, intelligent, bright, scholarship ready like poor grammar and spelling. That influential person with the ability to further your career won't care if ebonics is your native tongue or you fill out paperwork like a 3rd grader. Or maybe you aspire to a job that doesn't require writing anything down? More power to you. I hate paperwork, but I love having my own small business. It does require me to communicate with people through email, which does require these skills you deem non-important. I really should have paid more attention in that 1 year I went to high school

Somehow I doubt you would "lose" much business if you wrote loose instead of lose in an email.

You know if somebody screws up in math, someone ends up overdosing on medication, or a bridge falls down. If somebody writes loose instead of lose, you know what happens, nothing. Because it's not important.

So umm, not to get off topic here but I want to say a few words. I've been kind of moody for about the past 4 months, (maybe my whole life), but definitely for the past 4 months because I've been trying to quit smoking. Anyway, sometimes I tend to post stupid angry shit because I'm in a bad mood. Looking back at the op, this thread isn't even argumentative like I thought it was, (I never read the first post before posting in here). Anyway, I just want to apologize if I pissed anyone one off. I have to say that english is a really easy language to spell, with a really easy grammar. nevertheless it's not my mother language, and I make a lot of mistakes; before this post I didn't even know that these 2 words had a different spelling!

French is way more complicated with lots of traps, catches and exceptions both in spelling and in grammar. It really bothers me when I see French people writting it in a clueless way, mostly the younger ones with all this SMS culture. I do think that poor spelling in yourown language is shameful and that it's always good to try not to make the same mistakes instead of just saying "who cares??"

So umm, not to get off topic here but I want to say a few words..

No worries, life is full of chances to let loose some poorly thought out words or well thought out words in the wrong context or at the wrong time. Now is the time to eat, drink and be Mary! though I think I'd rather just eat Mary, skip the "drink" and "be" parts (see what I did there? mixed in some poorly thought words!)
