It's basically because, although it's good, pretty much everything about it has been done better elsewhere. The actors have done better films playing similar roles, the effects are better in other sci-fi films, you've seen Indiana Jones, so the mythology is familiar, but not as exciting...

Even the series- Richard Dean Anderson is more fun as MacGuyver. It's Star Trek episodes rehashed. Stargate Universe was like a sub-par Battlestar Galactica (the remake).

It's well done, but every part of Stargate and its franchise is like cheering for bronze. You can recognise the achievement, but...

As I recall, I watched the Star Gate movie with my son, who was about 12-14 at the time. He really enjoyed it and he watched the TV series, too. Because it was all new to him, he enjoyed it and thus I too enjoyed it because of him.

The premise of space travel via the star gate is cool and the link to ancient Egypt sparks the imagination. I cannot recall if the movie had the US Government connection; I assume it did. I know that the USAF (Air Force) had a major role in the TV series, as best I recall.

Were there two TV series, a spin off or follow up? I cannot recall for sure. I stopped watching the first TV series after one season or so and barely saw the 2nd series.

He also enjoyed the TV series of the Star Trek Universe called Enterprise (again, based on my memory). I never enjoyed that series. I can see the lead actor but forget his name. It was set about 100 years before the original TV series. I think I posted ideas about Star Trek in the thread here comparing Star Wars vs. Star Trek.

There were three TV series based off of the movie in the end: Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. Stargate the Tv series was a follow on from the movie with some of the same characters. Atlantis was kinda weird- a spin off of a spin off. Universe was ok, but was cancelled.

The original TV series did a good job at doing something Sci-fi series have kinda forgotten how to do. Something that kids and adults can enjoy watching together.

Off the top of my head, only Dr Who does that now.

I cannot comment on Dr. Who; I do not watch it. I think there is another forum thread on that topic.

BUT, good point, Symm.

When was it in the theatres? I can't believe I missed it. I hope I was busy that month. I feel like I'm losing touch with the real world. Maybe I should start watching television again.
