And REAL teaching involves not only letting your children criticize (with manners), but even exposing them to other doctrines ... and why they are not your own.

I cannot count the number of young 18 and 19 year olds, raised Christian, who would "discover" the environment or other issues where the Christian Church has not always had a stellar performance and suddenly decide that they were converting to things that pretended to be Native American, Hinduism or Buddhism ... etc.

A lot of that is that many people do not know the full history of their faith in part because most people never thought that some areas were important so they were never discussed by anyone. Did you know, for instance that there is a tradition of meditation in the west that is equally as old as that comming from the east? Odds are that you probably never heard of the famous medieval book "The Cloud of Unknowing."

But I agree that it is important to understand the beliefs of others as well, and not in a rude or dismissive way. There is a tendency to go to the easy "we are good/they are bad" mentality. This is not just true with religion, we do it all over the place. Politics is fertile ground for this mentality.
