Interview with Physics=2MuchFD
This week we had the chance to talk with a new organizer, Physics=2MuchFD. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with amazzony. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Sir. Ricco. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.
Now, on with the interview.
Q: Hello, Physics=2MuchFD.
A: Hello Gozar.
Q: You are new to the organizing scene. What made you want to start running tournaments?
A: I came across the tournaments on the forum. It seemed impractical for me the join them myself because I am not a member. That meant that a certain amount of the tournaments would not accept me, and even in the tournaments I could join, I would have to leave half of my game slots open at all times. Since I still wanted to work with the tournaments, I thought it might be interesting to make one myself.
Q: Where did you come up with your tournament idea?
A:
I like the map Feudal warfare, and I wanted to do something involving that map.
Originally, I wanted to do a tournament involving just the middle ages, but I wanted diversity and there were not enough maps. So, I decided a progression through time.
Also, I liked the idea of a less rigid round setup. For example in round 1, you try to capture your opponent’s castle. You start out at Fuedal Warfare to ‘surround’ your opponent’s castle. Then siege the castle in Siege. If you lose there, you have been pushed back out of castle and to Fuedal Warfare. This pattern continues until one team has succeeded in sieging the other’s castle.
Q: Describe the experience of running your first tournament.
A: Sending out all of the PM’s can take too much time, but overall its been fun. The creativity in the tournament idea process was entertaining. Surveying the games (when it is possible due to no fog of war) is rewarding as I can see how well your ideas turned out. There was recently a point where I had no computer access due to hardware problems, but beyond that it has gone pretty smoothly.
Q: How excited were you with your first CC win?
A: I was quite happy. I was playing two of my friends on the classic map. It was my first game in Conquer Club, and I was able to defeat the pair quite soundly with a bit of a turn around victory. The fact that I was able to defeat two great strategists, with a come back from behind victory on my first time on the website was quite rewarding.
Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?
A: Again, I have not played in any. The fact that joining a tournament as a nonmember would have been troublesome is the reason why I hosted one.
Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?
A:
Why: see above.
Where: I start a lot of 2 player Feudal Warfare games (fog of war, no cards, unlimited fortification). All of the neutrals in Feudal War serve to even out early game luck which is prominent in two player games. The Fog of War adds a lot to the strategy. On these settings this map can take a lot of thought, and as such is quite fun.
Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?
A: It would be so that you can review past games/turns in more detail. The game log offers some degree of detail, but not always the amount you want. If you could replay segments of the game on the map like he were playing the turn in front of you rather than reading the outcomes of his actions in the game log, it would be very useful. You could watch other player’s games to develop strategies, and review your own games to make more informed decisions on your own turn.
Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?
A: I would reproduce something available in another game I play. In the card game Magic The Gathering, there is a software developed for tournament organizers. You input the participants and the parameters of your tournament, and it gives you the games and pairings. Since it is a card game, it does not actually make the games, but in the CC version it would do so.
Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?
A: Tournaments do not follow the usual constraints regular games do. Therefore IMHO, the best tournaments flow from fresh ideas. By changing the rules, it changes up the same old games, gives rise to innovative strategies, and offers a true test of strategists in seeing how well they adapt. New tournament organizers are the best way to get these. So come up with ideas, start new tournaments, and don’t give up on them!
Q: What other forum parts are you visiting regularly besides the tournament ones? Are you even visiting them regularly?
A: I do not visit them regularly. I would visit the strategy part of the forum’s regularly but there is little useful information there because we are so secretive with our strategies.
Q: Why did you pick the name Physics=2MuchFD?
A: I picked the name because of my AP Physics class. The class can be quite a pain. So: Physics=2muchFD or (since work is Force times Distance) Physics is too much work.
Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?
A: The name would be the 42 because it is the answer to life the universe and everything (as stated in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).
Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?
A: Yes: The Emperor Tournament. It would be a tournament which is a mixture of triples and assassin. Each team at the start of the tournament selects one of their teammates to be their Emperor. If their Emperor is eliminated they lose the game. If they eliminate their opponent’s emperor they win. As I mentioned when talking about the ‘advice to new players’ part, I like innovation. Though my first tournament was not that innovative, this one takes a bit more of a stab in that direction.
Q: Thank you for your time.
A: No problem. It was between doing this and my homework, and my procrastination would have been fed anyway one way or the other.
