Interview with Tieryn
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer, Tieryn. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with jennifermarie. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with barterer2002. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.
Now, on with the interview.
Q: Hello, Tieryn.
A: Hello, Tournament newsletter incarnated in the form of Gozar
Q: Why did you join CC?
A: My housemate had found it online, and started playing it, and got me hooked... I of course took it far more seriously, was premium within 2 days, and haven't looked back. (except to see what was behind me)
Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?
A: I've always liked organising things, and had a few unique ideas for tournaments that I thought would be fun. After a few months in a community, you like to start giving back.
Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?
A: From the deep dark pits of the abyss that I happen to call a mind... I found inspiration in various places, or styles, or concepts. Some sporting, some chaotic, some historical, some musical, some speed, some ... no I think that's all of them.
Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.
A: The first tournament I ran, is in fact still running. I seem to only run -long- tournaments and haven't gotten the concept of short and sweet

The first tourney I played in was a large one, it was the around the world darts league run by kendoh, and unfortunately because of its size and complexity, it didn't make it past round 3. I think that was one thing that also led me to start running tourneys, tho I feel I've almost made the same mistakes in some tourneys...
Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been? How many at once?
A: I've had 4 tourneys running sequentially now for quite a while, and they've been long ones. I've run 5 tourneys, of which I'm only just brining the first to completion. I've had a hard time lately keeping of top of all my tourneys, with work and other time commitments, but I promise all my participants, they will get finished! It just might take a little while...
Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?
A: My favourite tourney is my triple-doubles (or tri-season doubles, but I'm not sure if we'll make season 2, maybe later in the year when I have more time!) because I've really enjoyed the games. But I also really enjoyed CC's Historical Battles, for different reasons.
Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?
A: My favourite player tourney would have to be Gozar's World Leaders Assassin tourney. The storyline and concept are excellent and it's been run really well.
Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?
A: I play all sorts of games, and don't have a particular favourite. A game with other players in it tends to be all I need. My tourneys are the same, each as varied and different from the last as from the rest. No pattern is discernible so far.
Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?
A: Almost 100% of my games come from tournaments or clan. I think I'm in 5-10 tourneys at the moment, and that's almost becoming too much for me to handle, but I"m coping... barely... I think I actually overcommitted and that's taken away from my time to -run- tourneys, but it'll all balance out in the end... Patience. I'm not going anywhere, I'm just taking my time getting there

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?
A: Over the moon, because it was on King of the Moutnains, and I'd made a shit move earlier on, to grab all the squares.. thinking that that would give me a bonus! but it wasn't until it gave me no bonus I realised I needed TWO shape groups! what a moron! but somehow that stuff up made the others focus on each other, to the point that I could build up, step in and win! Woohoo! Go me!
Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?
A: I came second I believe in the battle for north america, or at least made the grand finals, and I think I lost due to a silly move I made, so that's pretty disappointing, but honestly, I'm a poor tournament player

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?
A: Good structure, well organised, games on time, but still flexible enough to incorporate changes. I like organisers that go that little bit extra to make my life as a player easier. Game links (before [game]) was brought in, or just other little things to make life easier.
Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?
A: The CCC masters, just for the hugeness and scope of them, are a great example. Again as mentioned before, the world leaders assassin tourney, for its storyline and game concept.
Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?
A: I think my interesting ideas and concepts are what attract people to my tourneys. I don't offer prizes, but I try to offer concepts that might be fun, or challenging, or interesting. People want to be challenged. They don't want just a basic, few game, no fun tourney. They want something that's a little different, a little odd, or eccentric... That's what I try to bring.
Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?
A:
Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?
A: Don't make them so long, or convoluted. I tried something in the battle of the bands that was points per elimination... and it didn't really work out well.. How do you score deadbeats? is it fair or not? Even points for 1st/2nd/3rd/4th is a hell of a lot of extra work. In future, I'll probably just have points for a win, and more games in a round. Also, I'd probably only run premium tourneys in the future... Waiting for non-prems... or having them waiting for me or other players always frustrated me.
Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?
A: I wouldn't change much... I'd improve things, tweak things, but really, I love the way this site operates and provides me a great leisure activity that's challenging and fun. As well as a community for me to be involved with and grow in.
Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?
A: There has been talk for a long time about a tournament system, and I believe that if created and implemented, that would make my job as an organiser so much easier. I can take the focus off all the legwork, which is really just log-paresing and should be done by a program anyway, and focus on the ideas and the concept. And making the tourney fun and social, rather than just games, like most of my tourneys so far unfortunately.
Q: If you were Tournament Director for a day, what would you do?
A: Try to take over the world.
Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?
A: Again a system to make the stress of providing for the players less.
Q: What websites/programs are your best tools for creating a tournament?
A: I use excel, and CC's mass messenger (thankyou SIMOR!) as well as various little excel tools I've created myself to make my job a little easier. I think that's probably why it takes me so long.
Q: What is the biggest obstacle to running a tournament?
A: Time has been my big factor. To play all my games, as well as make/message/converse... it just gets overwhelming sometimes... (when I had lots of free time on holidays it was okay tho).
Q: Why did you pick the name Tieryn?
A: Tieryn is a title from the Deverry series by Katherine Kerr. I've been using it online for about 11 years now, and it's pretty much who I am. It was a noble rank between Lord and Gwerbert (Who were the district judges, one step below the king) and I thought... yeah.. that's me... (being the egotistical wanker that I am haha

Q:How good is it being Australian?
A: it's THAT good.
Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?
A: The need for speed tourney is taking registrations... That's my only plan at this stage, as I want to get all my current tourneys finished before I make any new ones.
Q: Thank you for your time.
A:That will be $53.40. And I want US dollars.
