Yes.

Just a question, has anyone even begun making a classic map yet? And if this is a contest for everyone, what happens in the unlikely event of the mapmaker having a falling out with CC and wanting to pull their map?

Ok, what it sounds like is that basically the Classic style map will no longer be available, but gameplay will.
That's pretty stupid because that's like copyrighting a map of the world.

What seems to be the suggestions from most people as to how the map should look like is an altered world map.
Different place names, some of the territories connect to other territories differently, etc. but basically still a world map.

From what I've been hearing on the big post where everyone is venting their frustrations is that they want a world map back. If cartographers draw up a map of atlantis or space or whatever, many people are gonna complain. (Myself included)

The whole reason I joined this site was for the original classic map, then I got mildly interested in the other maps, but I always tried to have atleast one classic game going. If the new classic map is going to be a mythological island or outer space (which by the way, has been done, twice) instead of a map of the world, then why bother? No one is going to care that it has the same gameplay as classic, because it won't look at all like a classic map. Aesthetics will be as big a consideration as gameplay, if not more so.

I like it! Nice work mate,

could this be a way to move forward whilst having a competition to get something truly epic as a replacement? (or maybe we stick with this one ; ) )

I totally was not telling you to do the XML. But this is time for someone else to step up and also be a hero... not as great a hero as you, but still above their peers!

If it gets agreed - I will do the XML for you... - Something tells me that it won't tho I'm afraid.

Let me clear a couple things up right this second before rumours and speculation take over and become fact and/or doom and gloom :)

1) The classic map and all other "stuff" had to change, you all know that and you know why. Saying "lets just put up the same map with different colours, it will be fine" obviously isn't going to work - I'm pretty sure very few of us here are lawyers, so lets not speculate.

and

2) I don't know what will need to change to make sure we don't put CC back into potential copyright issues in the future. I can't say what vetos may or may not come from the turtle, just don't read too much into MrBenn's speculations just yet. All we know for sure is that the new map will have to be sufficiently different from the old map to avoid these "potential copyright issues". What is sufficient is exactly what's up in the air and is what's causing the slow down and confusion for us all. Again, if you have not passed a bar exam, or hold a PhD and at least 10 years of experience with copyright issues, please don't go around trying to convince people you know what is or isn't sufficient, it's just going to cause more confusion and more problems.

Yes, we want to get everything fixed up as soon as possible, we certainly aren't TRYING to piss everyone off with the map. No matter how like the US-gov't-in-crisis you may think we are, we're not quite THAT stupid...or I hope we're not :|

This isn't going to be popular to say, but can we all relax a couple more days and we will get a map through as fast as possible. We don't want to have to change it again in 6 months because it has the same potential issues the last one did.

We're struggling with the new map as much as you guys are. My life would sure would be a whole heck of a lot easier without all this drama (it's seriously sucking my life away from me!) so I'm personally as interested as all of you to get this whole thing sorted soon to everyone's satisfaction. However that wont happen instantly no matter how much we wish it.

Hang in there, know that we aren't having great days either, and we will all work together to get this out fast, great and non-problematic.

If they say they need changing then so be it but i want to wait until a mod or admin comments on it ;)

Please be hopeful like the rest of us :)

Fastposted by Twill, but here's what I was going to say:

I believe that I may have been a bit speculative earlier... all I know that there is a potential issue with the classic map... we're trying to work out the best way to get an alternative that resolves theses issues, and that is going to be widely accepted by the community...

WOAH there!

Got fastposted.

Sam, thank you very much for the effort you have put in. PLEASE understand that your map WILL NOT BE QUENCHED and will NOT be put up as a "temporary solution" until we are certain of what the exact "potential issues" are.

Like I said - PLEASE do not speculate as to what is and is not sufficient. Yes, it may just be names and colours, but I guarantee you, adding copyright images (the tank, soldier, helicopter and airplane) aren't going to solve "copyright issues". No that is not the only potential problem. Please don't go getting people's hopes up.

I hate being the dick, but that's just the way it has to be.

Twill i respect your comments, but this map is not a long term solution, only a temporary one ;) so there will be no issues with it in 6 months because it won'be here ;) I didn't mean to start rumours just sharing my creation :( My sincerest apologies :(

Come on guys, lets keep the discussion about how we can move forward from here ;-)

Just in passing,

And trying to avoid the title of pseudo lawyer: if you just made the continents blobs and changed the names to letters and numbers; basically solving the problem in the same way as now but making it more visually accessible.

maybe it would help peoples patience a little and enough to take the pressure off the process?

Jim's right, you don't need to apologize, you are just trying to do what you think is best and to solve the current gong show, and for that effort you deserve only thanks and applause.

However, until we can post a set of things that need to change, the only thing that posting "solutions" will do is make life harder for everyone because while we wont be able to quench it, it will work its way through the forum, getting people's hopes up and making the outcry even greater, making it harder for us to do what needs to be done to ensure that copyright isn't going to be an issue, now or in the future. That's just going to cause more tension, more speculation, more uncertainty and more complications.

So I thank you, but please understand that we wont be able to quench anything until an official list of what does and doesn't need to change can be posted.

Thank you Sam.

If, in the end, your map fits within the requirements that the new map needs to, we may put it up as a temp solution indeed (anything would be better than what's there now), but until then, thank you for taking them down.
