Instead of "led" lights it reminds me of the algae in the pacific that glow in the dark when you make turbulence in the water.

Since when did algae grow in neat rows? I've seen natural algae(school pool  ) and it grows in weird shapes (except rows).

ok-ok, wave will be back in the newest version... ugh should have worked on it more last week and a half, I'm subing more now, and it's just sapping me dry. Almost done though, I just need to redraw the outline on the small map. If I don't face plant into the keyboard when I get home after work tonight, I'll hopefully be able to post it up then.

Hi RedBaron,

Nice map you have here ;)

I just have a few suggestions from a graphical point of view:
  • Connect Routes are nicely done i like them.
  • Mountains look good, well done on those.
  • Font of the numbers on the mini-map don't really work in my opinion, perhaps experiment with a few fonts and see what you come up with.
  • The Japanese Symbols that are floating in the sea either side of Japan, seem a bit out of place, not sure where else you can put them though. Can you tell me what they say in English?
  • The colour of Shikoku bonus on the mini-map is different to the colour of Shikoku bonus on the map itself.
  • Any chance you could put the Japanese symbols that are on the map, on the mini-map as well, it would look better in my opinion, but it is not necessary if you prefer it that way.
  • Also i think that the water itself could have a bit more of a ocean feel to it, if that's at all possible.

That's all i have for now ;)

Nice work on the map so far :)

I didn't see sam's post till just this morning, and I was done with this update , so posted what I had and I'll address those suggestions with the next update.

Changes made:

Country outline thinned down some more, it is at least as thick as the territory boundaries, or on the small map, I think it might be a smidgen thinner.
Asian wave background back in, algae bloom background out.
Changed the font to a asiany one. I have issue with the lowercase "j" and "g" and the way the font looks at 16 pt. is different than it looks at 13 pt. so I put it onto the small map at 16 pt. as well making the appropriate moves to make sure army circles and boundaries aren't obstructed. After all that of course it still may not be working and it'll be back to the old font, or a slightly different font. That is my main issue here most of these asiany fonts they are either very bold and blocky or thin and squiggly.
Parchment paper is newer and clearer and accenting the rules of the map.
The red circle is gone, so just the 日本 remains by itself shadowed in white in the Pacific Ocean along with the Bushido quote I ditched a while ago, reluctantly.
Cleared up the compass rose and was able to scale it between large and small map. The larger one is showing a lot more detail, which might also be an issue.
I took the blurriness out of the mountains and added a couple here and there in the same areas.
The kanji text symbolizing the "Sea of Japan" and the "Pacific Ocean" have been removed

I've already mentioned the font thing, so I won't again, but the numbers on the mni-map can easily be changed.
I can do the mini-map with the Zach effect kanji text texture, that also might fix the color discrepancy in Shikoku, since the mini-map only has 1 overlayer of black, and the map itself basically has 2. I can do it the same way doing each region with there own texture, or I could just do the whole mini-map with a single texture with 1 kanji text, like 日本. But I will check the color and make sure it is the same. Just so you know sam, and everyone really, I have on the first post a spoiler at the bottom of the post that shows all the kanji I've ever tried to use and their translations, as well as links to some websites I used for sources, and you could use them to make sure I'm not cursing at you in Japanese. ;)

I am digging the new font, Red.
The thinner black outline is an improvement as well.
Something about the quote though, I think that it looses something in translation. Maybe if you replace the word bury with kill, it would do it more justice.
edit- I am with ender (above), the mini map does NOT need any texture. also the Bushido saying might fit better if it were 3 lines instead of 6, and put the last line on top. Then I think that it would fit nicely down in the bottom right corner.

Both of these look okay to me.

Well, if you have to have an Asian font, this may be the best you can get. There's no harm in using the same point size everywhere if it maintains readability.

Why would it be an issue? Decorative detail is just that, decorative: it is not like any one is navigating by this compass rose and will feel deprived on the small map.

I wouldn't spend time on texturing the mini-map. I mean, is anyone not going to make the connection from any part of the mini-map to the main map because of the difference?

Don't have too much of anything to add at the moment, but just wanted to say that I've become a big fan of this map. Love the changes that have been made over the past few weeks. Has a great look, good-sized region bonuses, and is of a country that should be represented on the site. I'm sure there are a few nitpicks I'll have once it reaches Final Forge, but, at the moment, I just wanted to lend my encouragement.

The color for Shikoku from main map to mini map is identical, fdff77 The issue there is the texture, the text are blocks than when run through the zach effect make it quite dark adding basically a second overlayer of black, which gives it a different look color wise. I'll try and do one of 2 things there, I'll take the regular black layer off and see if the color comes through better, if that doesn't work I'll redo the texture with a bit more space between the characters to allow the color to show through the texture better.

Ok, that's good, as long as the readability is good, and it isn't taking away or over-cluttering the map I'm ok with what I've got too. I just could NOT use the 13 pt. version on this font it looked totally different. This isn't a "have-to-have" I always hear that functionality trumps form, if this isn't going to work, as judged by the community at large, then I'll go back to the old font, or another decent Western style font. Problem of course is that the community at large won't get a taste of the map until the map is a Beta... :roll: ](*,) {shrug}

I don't mind giving it a try, it is easy enough to do. Especially since my first impulse is to just add the texture for the whole mini-map to be just 日本. The mini-map is smaller by a factor of 3 so it isn't really worth trying to exactly replicate the main map since you won't be able to make it out anyways. If it doesn't work or look right... delete -- next issue. ;)

bury and grave go together, so does kill and grave so I'll try it and see if I can't the quote to fit in the bottom as 3 lines with your suggestion. If that works I can easily position the 日本 east of Tokyo and Chiba.

I just noticed something about the font. It is thinner at the bottom than the top, so if you change the direction on the drop shadow, to cast down instead of up, it may help to make it more clear. I would even experiment with pumping up the opacity on that drop shadow. that will also help in this respect.
Man, I am really starting to like this map. The first thing that strikes you is the wonderful use of bold, bright colors. A welcomed change from the fad of late, to fade everything out so much. :D

Changes made:
Texture added behind the mini-map it just 日本 over and over again.
Turned off the black overlayer on Shikoku the color should be more pronounced and you should be able to tell the color is the same between the main map and the mini-map.
Dropped the shadows around most of the text 1 pixel to give better clarity to the text itself since the font is thinner towards the bottom.
Changed the font of the numbers on the mini-map to the same font as the rest of the the map. Shadows there are still positioned directly behind the numbers, not lowered.
Text of the quote placed in 3 lines instead of 6, more space allows for the main 日本 to be moved and better centered in the Pacific Ocean east of Chiba.

Anything else? :D

I've also begun the XML process Mr. Benn's 88 cursor and Jota's map tools are helping me out greatly so far... the little 88 as a mouse pointer for everything else, not so much. ;) :P

Yes, the text looks super. Do NOT change that font, It is perfect.
I am glad to see that the Bushito saying does actually work better like that.
Congratulations, in my opinion "stick a fork in it, it's done". =D>
Except maybe the Bushito saying might be better if it were scaled down. also add a comma after the threaten and kill. and a period at the end of the first line.

As I said before, I struggle to find any critiques here. The only tiny suggestion I'd make is pushing the Fuji/Nagano border just a tiny bit to the north on its east end (further north into the mountains) so that no one gets confused on the small map and thinks that Nagano and Tokyo are adjacent. Other than that, I think this is definitely ready for Final Forge (and likely Beta soon thereafter).

Fixed the border between Fuji and Nagano and added those commas in the Bushido quote, you could go either way with the commas, but it sounds a bit better when you say is with a pause after threaten/kill then not. Iscaled the text back in the quote a smidgen with the small map I can only go as small as 16 pt. since that is the lower limit for font detail.
With any luck I can show successful tests of my XML by tomorrow or Wednesday.

Tohoku and Chubu look the same colour as well as Kyushu and Chogoko
at lest for my colour crippled eyes
I guess its not a big deal since you have a minimap But a player shouldn't need to scroll and check and double check to see if they took enough of the bonus
and a little nitpick
The mountain in the legend could use less pixelation on the botom

I like it, specially in white. The black however, looks a tad too bold, maybe a dark gray or dark brown for the bit sitting over the paper. For the Bushido saying, perhaps... no I think it looks good in black.

Well... the mountains are looking a tad out of graphical place. Perhaps if you could runt hem through a filt to get rid of the little detail lines inside. Just a thought, don't think it needs a complete overhaul or anything.

The purple of yamagata is crossing the border into niigata.

I think you should reunite the Japan vertical text with the japanese characters. Perhaps move 'japan' from the upper left to next to the characters in the lower right?

Looks great though, I really can't wait to play this map!

That should fix those little problems:
Text on the parchment is a dark brown... may wanna go a tad bit darker
Cleared up the mountains, their "zits" are gone
Checked all the borders around the bonuses that switched colors on the map and the mini-map to make sure there wasn't any colors bleeding into other areas
Moved "JAPAN" next to the 日本 added drop shadows and offset them down by 1 pixel
Shoved the mini-map over into the empty corner and offset the drop shadow on the bonus values by 1 pixel down
Repositioned the compass rose further into the Sea of Japan
Created myself a map signature... I dunno if it'll fly(no pun intended) but I thought I'd give it a try. Easy enough to delete if everyone thinks it sucks. ;)

Still working on xml... so far so good, it is pretty much what I though, copy and paste, make sure the names are all spelled the same. Lets hope when I run the tests they agree. 8-[

A few more tests need to be run(88, 888, color tests, etc) but initial testing is good to go on the XML, coordinates all sinc up to their circles.

I don't wanna toot my horn too loud about this, but unless anyone has any other issues, and I know there should be a at least a bit more vetting on the map. But.... for all intensive purposes, this map is ready to go. 8-[ :D 8-[

Question. Since this is a modern map of Japan, I think you need to change the flag to the proper flag. You have the flag of the Imperial Japanese or Army (I can't tell because of the angle) with dates ranging from 1870 - 1945 and then from 1954 to present. Info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_flags#Military

The Japanese Naval ensign is still easily recognizable as Japanese, and still currently used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. In fact better depicts Japan, the flag has 16 rays like the symbol of the Japanese Imperial seal, the chrysanthemum, which has 16 petals.

I could go look for one that more like:

but I'd doubt I'd find one better. The community, from when the map was in the drafting room, accepted it, and has considered it a wonderful graphical addition.

If the community says it's alright then I'm good with it. I just didn't now if you knew that that's all as That was the first thing I saw on the map.
