Um, what? "another map killed"? We can debate on whether or not the Germany revamp works, but I can't for the life of me think of what you even mean there by implying that that the revamp process has "killed" other maps.

And before getting snooty, I think you might want to bear in mind that it's only due to the thousands upon thousands of hours of time put into mapmaking by members of the foundry that this site has such a bounty of maps in the first place.

I appreciate the fact that you don't like the Germany revamp, but you do yourself a disservice by getting pissy at an entire community of volunteers.

More in jest.... and no other revamps to my knowledge have gone as bad as this one. Sure others met resistance, but nothing like this. Germany was a map many people enjoyed with lots of appeal to it. Sure the graphics may not have been super high tech, but it got the job done with some nice game play. At any given time you would find high ranked private std seq games on it, team games, quads, triples, doubles. Those are all things of the past. The only triples on it is the one me and ladd are playing. You can place blame on anybody you like, but once this came out pep has since vanished to my knowledge. I am sure Benn has something in the works to fix this but until then we are left with a map with lots of issues and nearly unplayable as it sits. (from a graphics point of view) Not trying to be an asshole, because I know these take lots of time to make and revamp but this one just did not work out. The CC community in large voted, just by not playing the map. Take it for what it is.

Germany Revamp

Postby MrBenn on Fri Nov 27, 2009 8:04 am

This thread is now closed; further discussion will take place over here
Subject: Germany Revamp Competition

MrBenn wrote:Revamp Competition
While the Foundry is having some down-time, it seems like a good time to be running a Revamp Competition!

The subject of the map in question has been a bit of "HeiƟe Kartoffel". Since the current Germany Revamp went live, legitimate concerns about visibility and legibility of some areas have been raised. Despite a lot of backlash from the CC community, the foundry gave its full support to the revamp on the assumption that amendments would be forthcoming. While there has been some discussion about the required adjustments, pepperonibread has gone into hiding, without submitting any further updates. Ordinarily, a crack commando unit of cartographers would be scrambled to make necessary changes, but without access to the source files there are too many amendments to adjust the map behind the scenes with ease.

With this in mind, the Foundry Team is proposing an open Graphics-only revamp of the existing Germany Map, in order to get it released from Beta as soon as possible.

Competition Rules:
  1. It is the mapmaker's responsibility to understand and comply with Foundry standards regarding image size, use of copyright-free images, leaving required space for army counts, etc. Maps not meeting Foundry standards and/or raising any copyright concerns may be withheld/removed from the competition.
  2. The competition is for a graphical revamp only: territory names and border connections must be unchanged from the current live version of the Germany Map.
  3. The general layout should be as close to the current map as possible; the idea is to make the transition between maps as easy as possible this time around, and in an ideal world we would want to keep the XML (technical description of the map) unchanged - although some flexibility will be allowed where necessary.
  4. In order to maintain anonymity, please refrain from posting your map publicly. Obtaining feedback and opinions on your entry is not forbidden, but patterns of irregular voting (ie block-clan votes) will be investigated.
  5. Collaborations are not forbidden, although only one person can be responsible for copyright ownership, and only one mapmaking medal will be awarded to the winning entry (pepperonibread will also be awarded a medal for revamping the territory/region configuration).
  6. Host your map file (one entry per contestant please) using Photobucket or some other file sharing program, and a link must be provided to MrBenn by 11:59pm GMT on December 27th, 2009. Late submissions will not be considered for entry.
  7. Submissions should be Final Forge standard, and will be shortlisted by the CAs if necessary, before a one-week voting period to determine the winner.
  8. Once the winner has been chosen, there will be a short period of polishing/checking before the winning submission will replace the Germany Map in Beta.
Recharge your glasses, and join me with three cheers for the Germany Revamp Competition!

Hip Hip Hooray!

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer...

If you can, you should take the "n" out of "Magdenburg". It's a misspelling, in case no one told you before. :)

I must say I love this map and I'm looking forward to playing it!

Brazil and Centerscape I did not win. RJ did. Plus I am sure RJ would have won this if he had entered. He has the best maps IMO.

Aha, I forgot Brazil was a competition initially (because I only followed it once RJ was working on his copy). And yes, he probably does have the best graphical ability of anyone so far, but you're pretty darn close and much more varied in style. :)

As for this version, I think the water (especially the rivers) is a little too white. The river in the bottom right starts out as a nice color but fades to white as it traverses inland. I like the look of the ocean and the rivers where the grunge is on top of it though!

Also, there is an odd bit of land to the left of Osnabruck. Is that suppose to be a part of OsnabrucK? You probably included it to be more geographically accurate with the river, and I guess it's fine because it doesn't border any territory directly.

The mini map doesnt quite correspond to the main map, especially on the yellow/brown border.

- Now that the competition is over, you'll need to add the map-makers' names.
- The glows of the region names on the minimap vary greatly. Not a big deal, and it's probably just an illusion caused by the color, but I still feel like mentioning it.

Congratulations on winning the contest.

Braunschweig and Hanover need to fit inside their spaces better. I think you can tweak the borders to accommodate this without changing gameplay. Hanover isn't all that bad, just bump the border so the r is in the province... Braunschweig might need an western border revision to fit that mammoth thing in.

Why must the space be modified to have the ENTIRE name fit? Do you think that is how real maps work. I really hate hyphenated names on maps especially for GP purposes (much easier to read without). I just don't want to alter the geography anymore to just fir in a name. It is very apparent where the name goes and what tert it is referring too.

iĀ“m happy to see that the nonexisting mountains between MĆ¼nster and OsnabrĆ¼ck finally disappeared. The river isnĀ“t exactly the position of Rhein, but the river makes much more sense than the mountains before.

Fair enough. I routinely get prodded by the mods to make my names fit in the territory, i always thought it was standard rules for CC maps. You must love my Germany map though ;)

It all looks pretty terrific at the moment. I can't see any immediate concerns. Perhaps after a banana I'll give it some more thought.

The legend has the mountains and river to the right of the map, but there isn;t a label to indicate they're impassable.

I think that's pretty much all that needs to be done; well, that and the XML :p
