Suicide option

Postby Halmir on Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:12 am

Concise description:
  • Some games drag on for ever and stalemate, and u would be glad to drop out. However just because u aren't enjoying it, shouldn't mean that u ruin other's fun by deadbeating, and make them wait 3 lots of 24 hours before you exit.

Similarly, if u know u will be away on business, vacation etc so can't take ur turns, it's unfair on the others in the game to suffer your slow exit.

My idea is to speed up the exit process

Specifics:
  • Add a button that gives the option to players to change their turn duration timer from 24 hours down to 1 minute (or instant). If the situation changes and u can start to play again then great, hitting the first button creates a second button to revert back to normal play.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • speeds up games, lets everyone get on with their games, people will like other players who are considerate enough to duck out gracefully

its been suggested a million times...and it would be a great option..except that the possibility for abuse far outweighs the benefits...

Well I think there should be something in team situations where you can give all your cards and territories to your teammates, or at least some of them so you don't leave them all alone to lose without you.

This IS the surrender button, again, but I certainly support it.

Voting Resign Button

Postby ljex on Sun Feb 07, 2010 5:57 pm

I'm going to start this out by saying as so many do that this might have been suggested before and if so I am sorry but there are so many threads about a standard resign button i don't feel like looking through every one individually to see if this type of resign button has been suggested before.

Now i have seen countless suggestions for a button that allows players to quit and in fact CC used to have one however it was prone to abuse which is why eventually CC took it away. I think a way around this would be to allow players to vote on weather or not a player is allowed to leave when they click the resign button. I dont see why people want this so much but im sick of seeing it over and over again in sugs and bugs and feel this fixes the problems with the old method CC used for a resign button.

Specifics:
When a player wishes to resign from the game they click the resign button. At this time they are still in the game, however at the end of beginnign of everyone's turn it prompts the player that say Ljex wishes to resign from the game. Then they take their turn and at the end of the turn a Prompt comes up Do you wish to allow Ljex to resign from the game with 2 options yes and no. For a player to be allowed to resign they must get either all or all but one of the remaining players to say yes (if all but one is implemented either player must receive a yes from their opponent or resigning in 2 player games is not allowed). The reason i say all but one is because I gives the player who votes no an advantage because they know the player is still going to be in the game where as if one player can vote no and they player is still allowed to resign then there is still the uncertainty of weather or not the player will be allowed to resign. Then if they player who wishes to resign receives the required votes they resign and are eliminated from the game.

Some other things to consider,
1) Terminator games - If allowed do the territorials go neutral and the winner of the game gets the points or the persons territories remain and player that eliminates the person or who wins the game gets the points.
a) if the person who resigns keeps their cards so when they are eliminated the person gets not only points but also cards
2) Assasin games - Not allowed as this would result in the changing of targets
3) Freestyle games - don't know how the voting process would work for freestyle games

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
I guess the only benefit I can see is that people who are trapped (especially freemiums) in build games can get out of them.

If it's come up a gazillion times before, then this kinda supports the notion that there's a general support for this function?

i totally agree with your idea . sometimes you lose the game in first round but you need to keep the game open more 30 minutes or more to the opponent finish it , append a lot in no spoils games or "big" games , like "hive" "world 2.1" "oasis"

How long do you think it would take for a player to create a multi, then a bunch of games, have the multi join the games and hit the surrender button and just give the points away? Talk about something that would be ripe for abuse.

Sure why not give the cheaters another way to make points and another reason to make more accounts just so people can quit in round one because they don't like the drop. The dice don't go your way the first round, OH! What do I do? I know I will surrender.

Hell there probably won't be any games played after awhile, let the drop decide who wins.

wouldn't it be nice if I didn't need a reason to exist here other than to play games.

So suicide ain't painless, it brings on many changes....

Postby Halmir on Thu Mar 18, 2010 5:05 pm

Concise description:
  • People object to the idea of suiciding in a game, surrendering, giving up, whatever. There are games where they have stagnated to the point of dementia and will not move for another 100 turns (case in point game 5769987). I used to have one third of the map with the cupcake and pacman, but lost that through superior dice rolls and tactics of my opponents. Bitter? no. bored now? YES. The game has dragged on far too long yet I can't exit it voluntarily. Instead I have to make my erstwhile opponents suffer a long slow further boredom whilst I time out my turns as I REALLY can't be arsed to play this game any further, it's as dull as dishwater dull, due to everyone's strategy of trying to outlive their opponents IRL. GAWD it's dull. So I decided I didn't want to spend my life playing meaningless turns for the next 6 months. I did at least apologise.

Specifics:
  • Howls of protest meet each suggestion of a suicide or resign option each time it comes up (ignoring the fact that this is suggested regularly, clearly many people each year want this!). OK fine, instead let's have a "skip" function. This removes the game from ur playlist so it doesn't impede u playing the rest of the games that can still offer enjoyment, it just hides this deathly dull one from u.
  • If u were feeling benevolent, u could make a player's turn who is "skipping" last just the one second, so that the other players can enjoy their tedium untroubled by someone who has got fed up with it all. Or perhaps that's part of the sado-masochism that I'm missing :s
  • I would gladly lose double the normal points on such a game just to exit it. It really ruins my night to have to play (or avoid taking) a turn. It's not what I signed up for here.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • if the benefits aren't obvious I'm surprised u even can comprehend the problem...

This might be one of the best written suggestion posts I've ever stumbled upon (I don't read this forum frequently -- must have been the allusion in the title). If for nothing else, thanks for the good read.

With that out of the way, here's my thoughts.

I suicide all the time. If I'm playing a speed game and I have to get off the internets for unforeseen circumstances (or if I'm losing badly and I haven't the patience to stick it out and I make up an unforeseen circumstance requiring me to log off) I just announce that I'm going to "speed things up a bit" and suicide myself into oblivion. Sometimes I include an insincere apology, like "sorry dude I gotta go". I only play the game for fun though. I'm not trying to compensate for something else with a high score, so I really don't care. On the flip side, I don't mind it when other people suicide (and it happens often). I never mark them as suiciders in the after-action report. I usually mark "friendly" or "good strategy" when they do.

No one has complained yet or filed a C&A report. Although thinking about it just now, that could be because they know that if they do not shut up, I will punch them in the face.

Drop Game Button

Postby epicethan on Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:05 pm

I'm sorry if this suggestions has already been discussed and thrown out or not, but this is what I would like to see implemented at some point or another.
For Premium members, this would not be helpful in any way whatsoever, but for free members, it could save some frustration. I suggest the addition of a "drop game" button for each game somebody is currently active in. This would acts as both an advantage and disadvantage to all players in a game. The main reason why some players would like this is because many times free members are in four active games and they know they have a few free hours and their opponents haven't gone their turns recently and they would like to play a game or two. If there was a "drop game" button and the member wasn't interested in continuing to play that game for any reasons, they could hit the drop game button and join another game. Of course, details would have to be worked out such as:
You can't drop a game if you have less than X number of territories (possibly being a disadvantage to other players that might have taken you out).
Maybe you can only drop a game if there is a certain number of players remaining (or possibly only in 1v1 games).
Regarding territories that you owned, whether or not they revert back to the default amount of 3 or if they stay the same.
Regarding assassin, terminator, doubles, triples, quads, etc: Maybe an automatic no drop policy or other specifics.
Regarding Points. Of course if you dropped an active game, you would lose the points immediately, however when you lose them, your points could either get split up with the remaining players, you just lose them, or throw in a twist saying that the person with the leas amount of territories (or troops, or both) get to split your points.

Obviously the specifics for this idea would have to be thought out and worked on but I would think that this extra button would save some frustration for people that want to play immediately!!
As always, suggestions and revisions are welcome!

There's already an easy solution to this problem. It's $25 a year of premium membership. That's only $0.07 a day. Then you can play 1250 games at once!

True, but at one point or another, a premium member has probably thought to themselves, "I wish I could drop this game, I've been playing it for way to many rounds and I don't want to worry about it anymore" or if they know that they are going to lose anyways, and don't want to play out the rest of the game, they can just drop it.

OMFG I would do unmentionable things to people in dark alleys to have this implemented. Round 1 some guy says...."Sorry guys I have XXX to go to." And then he just rotted for the 72 hours it took him to drop out of the game.

Other websites like this one have it....I have no idea why this one doesnt.

I mean, if someobdy wants to drop oout of a game why not let them?

It would be abused, plain and simple.

It would be useful in some situations, but the cons out weigh the pros.
