Alliance Question

Postby Snipples on Thu Oct 08, 2009 9:21 am

I am new to CC and was playing a game on Iberia earlier when someone was getting quite strong (player A), so I allied with someone (player B). Throughout the game I used a lot of my resource to keep player A from collecting 2-3 region bonuses per turn while player B, my ally, slowly grew very strong himself. At this point in the game I had a decent sized army but did not have any region bonuses. While my so called ally took a few of my 1 army spots, claiming that it is ok to since " I am just grabbing them for cards". At this point he took one of my 1 army spots and got the largest bonus on the map (8 armies). So in order to not allow him to become so strong to the point that he would easily win the game, I broke the bonus. At this point he freaked out saying I was a "fucking backstabber" and told me thats not how we do things here. So in that situation I am supposed to just allow him to collect a stupid amount of bonuses and basically let him win the game? If thats the case, then I think it is totally ridiculous.

first of all welcome to the site..

making alliances in game is a tricky thing, first u have to announce it in the game chat.. my suggestion to u is to try and avoid that situation altogether.. sounds like u were in a 3 person game, which is very common for 2 players to team up on the strongest player to keep the game even, with experienced players there is no need to verbally ally each other, they just know what they have to do to stay in the game.. anyway back to ur question, if u are going to ally with someone in a game i would suggest when allying make it for a certain number of rounds, or until the job is down.. that way no one feel betrayed when u start hitting each other, both can prepare for the alliance to end.. it sounds like u needed to break ur ally to keep the game going.. in the end ur looking for the win, so yeah, ur ally is pissed u didnt let him run over the game.. but u got to do what u need to..

hope this comment helps,

Vamp

On a side note: when i was starting out i made the opposite mistake.. player was getting to strong i allied with someone and together we went to far and destroyed the strongest player, just handing my ally the win.. bad move on my part..

Game 5716915 I presume.

Some people never bother even creating alliances. They're unfair and tend to ruin games. Just accept your loss or fight the winning player. If he wins he's probably outplayed everyone else in that game, so why should you ruin that with cheap tactics?

Others say it's okay to create an alliance but either a time period for how long the truce will last should be specified, or there should be an agreement upon the amount of rounds warning you have to give before breaking the alliance.

Personally, I would definitely get annoyed if players allied against me, and I'd never truce against a player. In your case, I don't think you should have created an alliance in the first place. However, I do think you were right to break your ally's bonus. If he does something as blatant as that you have every right to attack him in return.

In the future I'd advise you to stay away from alliances - just play team games instead if you prefer, but all truces do is cause arguments and mess up the game.

A) If he's already attacked you in those minor ways without your permission, then you're not the only "backstabber" in the alliance.
B) Sure, you backstabbed him to a degree, BUT it was to ensure that he wouldn't be dominatingly strong...this is perfectly acceptable to most players on this site, I am quite sure. Very possibly even the player you were allied with, even though he reacted initially in a very emotional way (understandably).
C) Absolutely not...your ONLY REAL job in the game is to do everything you can to put YOURSELF in a position to win. Sometimes, that means forming an alliance. Sometimes, it means making lesser agreements with players. Sometimes, it means you DON'T make an alliance. This really is an every-man-for-themselves scenario.

I see nothing wrong at all with what you did.
