Flame Wars, Pros and Cons

Postby BigBallinStalin on Thu Nov 26, 2009 7:48 am

I'm starting this in regards to thegreekdog's question.

I'm a newcomer to the forum scene, and I've never frequented this place when Flame Wars was going on, so Flame Wars for me is the stuff of LEGEND.

What I would like to see here is one format for replies:

1) Pros:

2) Cons:

3) Should it be brought back: Yes? No? Why or why not?

And do try and be civil, you crass bastards! Otherwise, the mods will lock this, and even worse for the pro-Flame Wars'ers, nothing will get accomplished to achieving what they want. I want this thread to have clearly stated before all the different arguments behind this decision of banning flame wars and why the ban should or should not be maintained. If this goal is accomplished, then it can end much of the tension about the issue since the many points and arguments that could be brought up are right here and able to be read clearly.

But before you begin, of course, you can reply to someone's pros and cons without that previous format, but do cite some examples or at least be a little coherent and smaat in your reply. A simply, f*ck YOU, YOU'RE AN IDIOT can be funny, but in this thread, it won't be productive. If you feel anyone's being a jerk, then deal with it outside, not here--basically, don't be a child.

I don't know much about flame wars, but from what I glanced about it from others is this:

1) Pros: it's a fun place to spew your rubbish out at anyone without getting warned or banned for it. Some of this rubbish is actually good stuff to read.

2) Cons: It hurts people's feelings. Some people's threads are unjustly thrown into the Flame Wars sub-forum due to it being ripped down by the flamers (perhaps that could be handled in a different fashion)

3) Should it be revived? Not sure, for my amusement, sure, but I don't know enough of its history to have a good answer on this.

There's only one con for me, and that is this: In the past, when topics were moved to the FlameWars forum (as they are moved from, for instance, General Discussion to Monkey Business now), there was no warning. So I would be following along in a thread and being unsuspectingly subjected to FlameWars abuse. People say "If you don't like it, don't go there" and I agree with that...but unless the method of moving threads is changed, I'll be going there unintentionally. Since I personally despise the FlameWars environment, this is a big deal to me.

I honestly don't care AS LONG AS my con was fixed. If that's not fixed, then I am wholeheartedly against bringing it back.

That being said, I don't see the administration changing their mind on this.

I myself have also never been around for flame wars, but from what I've heard about it, I can conclude this:

Pros: Swearing, abusive, drunk CC gathers at flame wars, and this can lead to some pretty damn funny posts.
Cons: TROLLS

Final verdict: Bring it back, everyone needs their own special place where they can come right out and yell "YOU SUCK KOCK LOL" at someone without getting torn a new one by the mods.

Flame Wars would be fun for a lot of members. Surely that is reason enough to create a flame-forum. No further discussion needed.

I don't know. Needing special help isn't giving it.

i have made thread after thread about this. i personally know of 5 people who, if flame wars were brought back would buy premium again.

and if those 5 dont, i will pay cc 150 dollars just to bring it back.

no bullshit.
