Fog of War protocol

Postby Aesa on Thu Dec 10, 2009 5:03 pm

Is it considered against the spirit of Fog of War games to share in game chat what you can see? In this game, I'm about to lose the Near East to green so I shared that information with the other players. My purpose in doing so was to alert the other players of a growing threat in the south. I didn't think anything of it until I got a message from green saying he thought this was against the spirit of Fog of War. I'm new to this community, so I'd appreciate others' perspectives on this. Thanks in advance.

It is really up to you. I personally find nothing wrong with it, but many people do. Just decide for yourself whether it is something you wish to do or not. If you do reveal positions, you will win more games, but get a few people angry at you.

That is really unnecessary. There is nothing that could possibly make you think he is a multi other than him being new to the site. What a horrible way to welcome a new member.

Well, I don't care if people share info publicly in FoW, but usually the chat is pretty quiet except for GL and GG...but if someone does say something, I wouldn't completely bank on that info, as he could be using that info as a ruse. Usually I can tell where people are by paying attention to bonuses received in the Game Log. So if someone tells me that Blue has control of Europe...I usually got it figured out before anybody decided to open their mouth. And, now with the new number crunch tool, it kind of hurts FoW play, as before, you didn't have the number of regions someone possessed available for all to see...so now, that info is quite useful in any FoW game. I kind of hated the stats when they first came out, but I am starting to get along with them now.

really, some people just don't like it... that's the fun of fog of war, the part where you don't know what the other players are up to... If you do tell them, it's as good as them playing a no fog game, isn't it?

Not the best idea, but you can always give misinformation just to f*ck with people.

It can be rather amusing at times.

Here's my feeling, and I haven't played much singles fog games, so keep that in mind when you decide how much to value my opinion.

I think that if you give out that information to help yourself win, then its ok. If you give out that information in a singles game to help another player win, then that seems wrong to me. So in this case I think you were ok because your goal was for you to win, which is after all the objective of a singles game.

p.s. In general I hate whiners who try to convince one player to attack another in standard sunny games. Luckily good players don't usually do this. At least not in escalating games.
