Dice - Streaky and Otherwise

Postby donkeymile on Fri Dec 18, 2009 3:32 pm

Just wondering why almost EVERY person I have played the last while has agreed that the dice on this site are primitive algorithm, and very streaky.

I have personally been 600 points above where I am now, and fallen straight down on horrible dice over a period of a week or 2 ... then on the basis of the best dice EVER I climb right back up ... only to follow the same rollercoaster all over again.

What is wrong with this? This shoudn't happen - yet almost everyone talks about it happening to them too.

Something else that has occured at times is that the newbie on the map gets the impossibly great dice that destroy the strategy the rest of the players have been able to muster. I am not alone in seeing this.

Am I frustrated? Yes, I am way down again and losing on nearly impossible odds sometimes. The dice need to be straightened out. I understand that these things happen even on a real boardgame and real dice - but not with this consistency. Something is wrong. I love this site but have considered leaving it because with random dice the streakiness shouldn't be occuring like this.

Anyway - just my 2 cents .... getting real tired of having a great strategy and then getting screwed by ridiculous dice .... so many of us agree that its hard to find a good fair game anymore.

I have never had point swings anywhere near the magnitude that you describe and I would never blame such point swings on dice alone (unless you are a very high rank, because above 4000 points then 600 point swings can happen much easier).

I have experienced point swings of 800 points in a quick period of time, let me rephrase that, i have lost over 800 points in a week, at least twice this year, the real hard thing is getting those points back, i have regained them twice this year, but has taken me on average 3 months to regain what i can lose in a week. Hopefully i have learned to recognize the cold streaks better, and have learned to walk away from the computer awhile when i see one.

My dice are usually average and fair.

p.s. CC dice are not based on an algorithm, I don't know why people cannot get this straight. They are based on random back round noise.

What is back round noise? Good question. Back round noise is low energy EM waves that are bouncing around the universe, and have been since the big bang. They have slowly lost energy over the last 15 billion years through Compton scattering. They are now very weak radio waves that hit the earth at random.

If you measure them (their frequency, or energy or wave length) and then pick a digit from that measurement, then you will have a random number. And you can make lists of hundreds of thousands of these random numbers and sell them to websites that want random numbers.

This is truly random by the way, not like algorithms which just appear to be random.

I agree brother. Been holding leuy for a month instead of the 2000 to 1500 point swing I was hitting my first months here. It's about walking away I think.

I feel your pain, Aze. ( In fact I'm contributing to it. )

But I firmly agree that shutting 'er down when the dice go to shit saves a ton of grief and losses. Math aside, and all the flowcharts, generators, and trials that have been done, there are too many living examples of this happening. Hell, the only reason I've gained in rank with all of the speed games I play is by finaly learning how to cut my losses.

Actually, isn't the fact you've lost so many points is such little time an example of how they're streaky?

so what your telling me is that i need to get a life, do something else, find a hobby, oh wait, i did that, i replaced gambling with c.c. 2 years ago, and 6,500 games ago.

Yah i knew it when 2 days ago i was riding a real nice hot streak (500 points) up to colonel, and i knew it when i was riding an incredibly bull shit losing streak (500 points) down, and yet i couldnt turn the computer off and go to bed, even after my wife wanted sex, and i had been the only person awake in my home for hours, thank God I only lose $25.00 a year hear, God only knows how much i would be into my old bookie by now if i was playing with him the last 48 hours.

I agree with JR.

My biggest problem is walking away from the computer when dice are going south. Not to mention telling the difference between just a few bad turns & when you actually hit a bad dice rut.

I had one rut that lasted a week & a half. Went from Major down to sergeant in 9 days. I lost games I was leading in simply by not recognizing the rut or just being in denial

My latest one was this past weekend that lasted 3 days, I lost about 20 games I should have won but yet I still took my turns 2 or 3 times a day. Again I dropped 2 ranks. Again, in denial

It is so hard to walk away from a game you love to play, good or bad dice.

Some of us need to learn patience, myself included.

My biggest problem, which is currently the case, is when you walk away from the computer, and the dice are still just as shitty when you return. Going on 5 days now.

I just went to Random.org and rolled three virtual dice to see what would happen......out of 40 consecutive rolls I NEVER had (out of the 3) any two numbers lower than a 54.......OUT OF 40! Where are those rolls during my attacks?

Thanks for the recent demotion Random.org, I appreciate it.
