If a thread goes off-topic what should we do? Seems like they just get locked, is this the best way to handle it?

Good question, Xel.

If a topic goes off topic---for most part, that is fine, provided it gets back on topic after its little foray into off topicness. Users in the topic usually try to reign in a topic when it is going off topic, and if not, a Mod will sometimes be around to post a reminder. But when a topic goes off topic for a couple of days, it's purpose has probably been served. ;)

Leave it alone, topics can change and a tangent can prove to be more interesting. If there are still people who want to discuss the topic they have every possibility to do so. The quote function makes it quite simple to discuss two or three different aspects in one single thread.

Lets try to keep on topic next time. If you'd like to converse privately, you can always do so in PM or in Live Chat. ;)

yeah, it is very common for a thread to not be technically on-topic any longer but still be in the same vein of the op's intentions...

however i see an option missing from your poll, which would be to slap on wrist those that take threads wayyyy off-topic...

so yeah, i guess its up to the op's discretion imo anyway...

Ah-Ha Now I see the picture! So if a few of us shot over to a 75 paged Thread like 'Thread of Records', or 'General congratulations', or best still 'SPAMALOT' and steered it off topic for less than a page worth of posts (which is the amount that you deem necessary for a subject to be considered off topic), would I be right in thinking that these threads will be locked also?

This new rule is a bit of a perplexing one indeed, because it shows that the moderators are not doing there job properly. Indeed if this forums past is anything to go by, within a few weeks most threads will be struggling to make the 3rd page before getting a lock down.

So basically what Andy is saying here is, if we see a thread that we do not like that is rabbiting on about medals or Mustards demise, all we have to do is go on over and talk about football for a few minutes and it disappear in a puff of smoke.

Thats easy.. Killer! Way to Go!!

I know one thing, if they do get locked and you try and re-kindle it in another new thread, you get a ban.

This is obviously for our own good I imagine....

Or, when a thread is embarrassing to you like the Woodruff thread, it gets locked rather quickly doesn't it? ;)

I'm off from work for a few days.

Joking. There was recently that woodruff thread where he had "had enough". It was on page 12 and had degenerated into random bullshit. I was just thinking the day before that someone should lock that piece. I think andy locked it at the right time.
There should be some leeway for threads, but they shouldn't go on forever.

Pretty shoddy attempt to bail andy out there, but i'm sure you'll get brownie points for it nonetheless.

You were "just thinking the day before" - really??! Strange, as today Aug. 31 at 5:19 AM is when it went off topic with theprowler's post. The post prior to that was Chaosfactor denying that it was him that threatened Woodruff. Like i said, pretty shoddy. Andy locked it at 3:45 PM today, which seems somewhat contradictory to andy's "a couple days" - this wasn't even 12 fooking hrs! No "reminder" from a mod either, as andy could've done without locking it.

This is a perfect example of the hypocritical heavy handed modding here, and also a good example of how they always have a brownnosing shill waiting in the wings to back them up.

andy, i think you do a good job around here, but i think your worrying about nothing of any real importance, please stop locking threads for being off topic.
That being said, i have seen mods posting off topic remarks, so obviously not all mods feel that locking threads over this is necessary.

well wheres the obvious choice that follows CC`s guidelines.. Going off topic can be considered so many things.. like spamming for instance.. Its an opinion which is what the issue with the whole kit and kabootle is ? what may be an insult to one is humor to another.. I guess it all depends on part of this lovely planet you come from.. And then there is the fine line of conspiracy to defraud..

If people are still posting in a thread, then surely the thread is of value to at least 2 people, so why take that away. If the thread is of no value, it will sink. If the OP or people discussing the original topic don't like the new direction then I think they can legitimately ask to return to the original topic. None of these require a locking.

What good does a lock do? What harm does the open thread do?

I fear it is the latter question that dictates which threads get locked and which remain open, eh Woodruff?

Please take note of the fact that neither andy nor his boy georgie have replied since i caught them both in a lie. Why is that andy? Do you enjoy appearing dishonest and cowardly to the membership here? You stated clearly that if a thread was off topic 2 days that was enough to lock it, then you lock a thread in less then 12 hrs after it goes off topic, and how about "if a mod is around they can remind you to stay on topic" - why didn't you slip in a reminder instead of locking it way before the deadline you set?

Do you realize what this does to your already shaky credibility with us peons? Do you have any idea how ridiculous this makes you look? Hello? Anybody home?

Ok. All I said was I agreed the thread should be locked. I don't even know who you are. I'm not going to sit here and argue with you in this forum. It's no wonder you get banned all the time. For a moment I almost believed your other thread where you claimed to be banned unfairly.
