Maybe it would be easy to find one of these threads if the new look of the forum wasn't such a cluster f*ck.

This isn't helping guys...

The site has decided that the Classic map has to come down... Lack appears to have decided that we're not going to be able to use a world map with the classic gameplay.

Please be patient, while we get our heads around what we're going to do next...

Read that post a minute before you put it here. I think that is just sad. I never liked the classic map, but I would think it is better to get rid of it altogether if you are going to change the theme. What is the point of having a new map of classic, but having the map be of Bangladesh or some other place? That is not classic.

I would say if they are going to do that, get rid of the map, and have no more classic, it defeats the point of the map anyways. We can all go play 8 man escalating speed on the Caribbean Islands, same # of territories.

part of me ...the bitter part.. agrees with that sentiment; scrap it, throw it away, why bother!
the problem is that no map even comes close to classic for me. it is not just gameplay or i could cope with the line drawn replacement we have now.

ahh well, battle over, i am completely deflated.. i'll be back when this sinks in a little more.

I'm not happy with the change and especially the "loss" of the classic map. But there are still many good maps to play on, and I still enjoy CC. But I will miss the good old classic map. Nothing can replace it :(

That can't be right. World 2.1 and DoodleEarth are still up there. So it's not the broader concept of a map of the world that's an issue ...

I agree with the person who suggested "resupply" instead of spoils. I'm sure that better terminology will come along better in time.

Just to make clear: being told I was not allowed to use the word "dice" in school applied to one school while using a copyrighted math program (I think, maybe, it was "Boxcars and One-Eyed Jacks").

HOWEVER, almost ALL games, whether owned by Hasbro, Milton Bradley or independent game makers use the word "dice" and "die." I think the change really was done to help separate CC from the Hasbro game, following the "better safe than sorry" maxim. If Hasbro decides not to pursue any action, it's possible CC might make its way back to the way it used to be (at least some changes back).

Can you imagine the crap lack is going through right now? He's probably laying a few bricks wondering if this website will be his economic downfall! I can't wait to hear from him about the past couple of days.

All these people who say they won't renew just makes me want to get a membership more.

Lack has not said anything ; Twill minimized the extent of the change at first, then posted yesterday- not sure if he posted today- the foundry is in a quandry ; and the CC masses are unenlightened . I couldn't find any Hasbro on-line "RisK " site while searching the web just now ; I wonder how much of this change is driven by fear and greed. Would the CC admins be this careful if the site was just getting by? I think not. Money is clearly at stake. Fear about losing money drives people to sell when stocks go down ; hopefully fear at CC will not drive this unique site into the grave.

Well, this is what Twill said today:

Re: New Classic Competition?
by Twill on Thu Oct 16, 2008 9:07 am

Let me clear a couple things up right this second before rumours and speculation take over and become fact and/or doom and gloom

1) The classic map and all other "stuff" had to change, you all know that and you know why. Saying "lets just put up the same map with different colours, it will be fine" obviously isn't going to work - I'm pretty sure very few of us here are lawyers, so lets not speculate.

and

2) I don't know what will need to change to make sure we don't put CC back into potential copyright issues in the future. I can't say what vetos may or may not come from the turtle, just don't read too much into MrBenn's speculations just yet. All we know for sure is that the new map will have to be sufficiently different from the old map to avoid these "potential copyright issues". What is sufficient is exactly what's up in the air and is what's causing the slow down and confusion for us all. Again, if you have not passed a bar exam, or hold a PhD and at least 10 years of experience with copyright issues, please don't go around trying to convince people you know what is or isn't sufficient, it's just going to cause more confusion and more problems.

Yes, we want to get everything fixed up as soon as possible, we certainly aren't TRYING to piss everyone off with the map. No matter how like the US-gov't-in-crisis you may think we are, we're not quite THAT stupid...or I hope we're not

This isn't going to be popular to say, but can we all relax a couple more days and we will get a map through as fast as possible. We don't want to have to change it again in 6 months because it has the same potential issues the last one did.

We're struggling with the new map as much as you guys are. My life would sure would be a whole heck of a lot easier without all this drama (it's seriously sucking my life away from me!) so I'm personally as interested as all of you to get this whole thing sorted soon to everyone's satisfaction. However that wont happen instantly no matter how much we wish it.

Hang in there, know that we aren't having great days either, and we will all work together to get this out fast, great and non-problematic.

I see you can still play risk on the real map at www.riskattack.com and http://www.denizengames.com/grandstrategy/. Both suck by comparison to CC, but it is interesting that they are not being stomped on by Hasbro.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been mentioned yet: for those looking for a map like Classic, use USA. It has the same number of territories, and the continent connections and sizes are nearly identical. For instance:

New England = Australia
Great Lakes = Asia
Rockies = Africa
West = South America
Southwest = North America
Southeast = Europe

The Rockies connect to the Southwest, but other than that, I've found it to be a pretty good substitute. So, if you can't stand the Classic graphics, play USA! ;)

My Leaving Statement

Postby kletka on Fri Oct 17, 2008 3:43 am

kletka wrote: Well said!! I just gave Twill 48 hours to make a proper announcement or I am leaving this site :(

I dont want to be treated like in a fucking army. All threads on this topic except this one are systematically deleted. They feed us BS about potential copyright issues, but it all looks like the issues are far from potential. I dont understand how the introduced changes will prevent copyright infrindgement, because they dont!! Copyright usually covers derivatives of the work, so most of the maps will be an infrigement. So the only solutions are either to cut a deal with Hasbro, or to move to a free country like Bahamas, Holland or China :mrgreen:

As a formal announcement in the proper forum about the most important and upsetting development on this site is still outstanding, I can no longer be a part of this site. I will miss all the fun and all the fine people I met here. I dont think my action will change the contempt of the site authorities to the users but I cannot afford not to act. Good Bye!!!

Why doesn't anybody mention the ME map? For me personally its demise has hurt much more than that of classic. I presume the copyright issues at heart of the matter there are a bit different but is there no solution to be had?

nice to see some info, but it is still obscurely located and most folks have to work to find these updates or aren't even finding them. searhing through this thread every day is rediculous for such an important issue vs having a real announcement or banner some where. Keeping a regular announcement somewhere cannot be a copyright threat, so there is no excuse for the lack of communication on such a popular site, especially one that does have a real and decent revenue stream from a large user base. I won't be renewing when the time comes.

I just don't understand why there can't simply be a map of the world, divided into 40+ territories, with the names of those territories being different from the original board. Quebec can be The St. Lawrence. Alberta can be The Prairies. Hell, Peru can even be Chile. Surely no toy company has the rights to the Earth!

Thanks MajorRT and ode. As a Classic-only player, I've been so frustrated at not being able to find out what's going on (even though the general situation is pretty obvious).

Like you say, why this isn't an announcement on the front page (and not that "Politician sound bite" that's already there), I don't know because I'm sure people must be leaving - I was planning on letting my games finish and moving on until I red your post with letter from Twill.

Thanks.

What is with the "Classic Art" map?? By the looks of the bonuses and the layout it's the same as our current "Classic Shapes" map...I didn't notice the art one until a few minutes ago. Why not just replace the shapes one?? I'm confused...and this probably sounds like a stupid question to most people lol ;)
