Three things, 'cause I'm bored:
1. Map Rank, while a useful tool, is still just that, a tool, and represents the first step in bringing statistical analysis to bear on CC. We may look back someday and see the map rank's relative rank formula with the amused contempt that we look at medieval methods for curing disease. Map Rank is not Gospel.
2. "The best player on CC" is such a subjective concept that there's no actual answer (and, for my money, tends to generate quite a bit of ill will when discussed). There's easily half a dozen people that are proficient across pretty much every setting (and at least most maps), and if you strip off freestyle than the list grows quite a bit. The real point is that the luck inherent in Non-Hasbro World Domination makes any conversation about the best player murky at best.
3. Herp at least belongs in the conversation mentioned in (2). Others would be Scott, sjnap, maniacmath, blitz, maybe prank, maybe benjikat, probably a few more that I can't think of off the top of my head. Of course, the very fluidity of the concept means that everyone's going to have a slightly different idea of who "belongs in the conversation". Maybe max belongs in the conversation; having never played him and given the amount of vitriol (deserved and undeserved) thrown his way, it's hard for me to say, but if you think someone can get to 5000+ without being sublimely excellent at this game, however it is that he or she gets there (save for Battle Royale wins), then you (porkenbeans) are a fool.
