what is cheating?

Postby spyhunter on Thu Apr 24, 2008 11:17 pm

It is easy enough to grab a dictionary and get a definition.. dictionary.com say cheating is "To deceive by trickery; swindle"

To me it can mean alot more than just that. If you google the word "cheat" with the name of any video game, what do you find?

** When it comes to games, a "cheat" is a way of getting ahead in a way you didnt earn. In other words, obtain something in a way other than the intended way of playing. **

On CC, there are many players who have found ways of playing the system for points. Not by earning them the way intended in the rules of the game. So my question is.. should this be considered cheating?

For example... There are some players (KLOBBER, firth4eva, Oggiss etc) whom have been accused of cheating (creating many many newbie/deadbeaters) And I have tested their explanations, and it is hard to tell. I did end up with some games with alot of new players. But either way, if it is not traditional cheating, it is definately manipulating the system. It is very unsportsman-like and not the way the game is meant to be played.

I dont mean to single out those three, I know there are others using the same method, and there are other "inventive" ways of gaining points. I feel that it detracts from the game for players trying to earn points the traditional way, and is in my opinion, cheating.

No points for new recruit deadbeats is on Lack's to do list.

Eventualy the thing that seems to bother you will be a thing of the past. Just give it some time.

Just a question, how did they gain points in a way not intended in the rules of the game?
As far as I can tell they all played games, they won those games and they gained points from winning those games. All within the rules.
Of course there are some maps that give advantages to players who study them, freestyle doubles is an example where team play and lightning quick coordination are examples that put the current #1 and #2 on top. They earned their point by being smarter then their opponent, by working on their strategy ect.ect.
You pointed out a few players who seem to have a high amount of noob deadbeats in their games. Were it true that it was based on a strategy then I would applaud them for doing so. I recommend you do the same if you want those points as badly and do not mind to play a map infuriating to anybody else. Of course you suffer the occasional stupid play by a noob, who proceeds to kill you, but that be the risk you take.

I think you should stick to the dictionary and keep it to swindling and in addition operating outside of the rules stated by this site.

The situation you mentioned is not cheating at all. Take a gander at all the Freestyle Terminator games I started awhile back. This was on classic. I had some games where 4 people would DB and other where you would get 6 ?'s Then others I would get all high ranks. Just the luck of the draw sometimes.

Those deadbeat points are legitimate, the method may not be in the spirit of the game, but then again this is a tactical game and that is one tactic. While many players have fun strategizing about how to be competitive and win games, there will always be others who worry more about the points and constantly scheme to expedite that aspect of the process. To them racking up fast points is a priority, and I suppose quickly reaching what is perceived as a good rank becomes a priority too, but that sure is an ugly way to get there. KLOBBER is the easiest example because he is so blatantly out there chasing cheap points. It appears that he has difficulty winning games against quality players, so instead he collects points by creating lots of Circus Maximus games which many recruits join and deadbeat. That's his thing and he's perfectly content doing it. Lot's of people are entertained by this site in different ways and one day KLOBBER just might develop some patience and learn to enjoy a competitive game. Until that time comes or the recruit deadbeat points change, let the little point piggies wallow in their fun.

if it's not in the rules then it isn't cheating.

starting circus maximus games and dropping all those that don't fill with new recruits is not cheating. it's just one of the many ways of making points in this site.

honestly i don't feel outraged by such players. in fact i pity them. imagine what a sad life klobber must have if he's willing to play nothing but 8p circus maximus games where there are only new recruits that deadbeat. i realy don't see the fun. there's no challenge there's no skill, there's no chat. nothing. and yet he wastes his time playing more and more games just to get points. i'd rather quit cc than do that. it's actually really sad if you think about it. to end up in a position where you're afraid to play anything but the same 8p circus maximus games because you might lose your points versus skilled opponents.

points are nothing fun is everything and if at some point you end up trading fun for points then that's the alarm sounding telling you to quit CC and get a life.

this goes out to all those that found a way of abusing the system for points.

Simply put I disagree. Dropping a game simply because you didn't get enough ignorant people is definitely cheating. Last time I checked this is Conquer Club not "Beat up on the newbies." Personally I think Newbie Game Abuse should be a bannable offense. Newbies should be helped encouraged and supported, that cook you see today could be a general tomorrow. They should not be taken to the woodshed (or in this case to the circus) and brutally assaulted for all their starting points.

Nah. It might be boring or childish to you but it isn't breaking any rules.

Must say that the Circus would be the appropriate place for brutal assaults though... ;)

I agree with this. It seems like it falls under the "gross abuse of the game" rule. Klobber does not want to play the games, if he did then he wouldn't drop when serious players joined, and he wouldn't block them from joining the next ones he makes. He just wants new recruits to join and deadbeat, and that is abuse of the unlimited game system (and the foe list).

What good is that? He'll just keep doing it. What they should do is take away his points, cause that's what he cares about, and then enforce the rules, so that he'll have to play real games to get them back.

You can cheat in a game quite safely but when you cheat in a thing called THE REAL WORLD (i'm sure you've heard of it) it is a big NO-NO.
As you may have guessed, I do not like cheaters.
I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.
