i wanna get my rating up fast, what to do?

so a few people i know have been into this much longer than i have, but now that im on it i cant stop. its actually taken time over from WoW. anyways, im looking to impress some of these people i know with my skills at this game, but im having a bit of a hard time as im only winning about 30% of the games i enter; so my rating is all kinds of low and lame. im wondering if theres a certain type of game i should look for, or a certain tactic i should take to get my rating higher, and faster. so far im thinking i should avoid the 4+ players scene (i joined way too many of them already), and just stick with the 2-3 player scene, that way i have a better opportunity of being the victor. but at the same time, if i get a win on a 8 player map, thats mad points. i just dunno where i should start i suppose.

You seem confused. Just to clarify for you, your rating is not a judgement of your overall skill as a player. It can often be dependant on the game settings you play. If you win some 1 vs 1 games, you will find some sore losers on your hands. It's recommended you play a fair, honest game with 3 or more players to ensure good ratings.

And again, your rating isn't anything to do with your skill as a player, merely your attitude in the game, or your style of play.

You didn't mention that you've been here a month and already completed 459 games.
it's_louis has his work cut out for him to catch up to that number.

Actually, I'm annoyed that you would tell this new member that what you've done (on your latest account), is a good example of how to gain points quickly. You had the benefit of playing thousands of games on another account, and then tried to make going from "new recruit to colonel in 5 days" seem like the norm for any new recruit playing freestyle speed games.

To the OP, if you like a game of skill and strategy, play sequential. If you prefer a game of speed, and timing, play freestyle. Whichever you choose (or even a combination), you will get better with experience, and points will come with that. Don't worry about the quick fix. You'll gain more of your colleagues' respect if you actually deserve the score you get, rather than finding the quickest, easiest way to gain points.

lol my bad i meant rank not rating. i was a little tipsy when i wrote that (playing drunk loses games and you tend to not check the 'note to self' box ). thanks for all your input though, i think ill give the freestyle speed thing a go.

Don't feel bad I once forgot to check that box in a fog game and listed all the bonuses I had, while I was sober

Playing drunk may hurt your rating, also your correct the more people in a game the less likely you will win. Then find a map and settings you feel comfortable with and put up some 1vs.1 games.

try playing lots of team games with a regular, decent team, I think that's some how some of the top players on the site got their rank...

If you look at the first page of the Scoreboard you'll see that players generally fall into one of two groups (there are plenty of exceptions, but I'm just talking in generalities here). The first group has played many games (thousands) and have a high win percentage (>50%). The other group has far fewer games and a much lower win percentage (<35%).

The first group play a lot of 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 games. Basically each game has 1 opponent and by random chance they would win 50% of the time. A win in these games doesn't yield a lot of points (20 on average) so they need to play a lot to get a high ranking. If you win 75% of the time you will average 10 points per game played if all opponents have scores equal to your own. In truth most opponents have lower scores so the average gain per game is far less than 10 points.

The second group (I'm in this group and working my way up) plays far fewer games, but these are non-team games with many opponents. In an 8-player game the points gained from a win is 140 if all of your opponents have scores equal to yours. If you win 25% of these games you net 20 points per game played. If you can win 33% of the time you will net 33 points per game played.

I've found a couple of keys to gaining in rank:
1. Play opponents equal to or greater than your score. You'll get more points when you defeat them and lose fewer when they defeat you. Also, you'll learn from them and become a better player.
2. Find a game style that you like and that you're good at. Stick to it and get better. Personally, I suck at 1v1 and escalating games so I avoid them whenever I can. I excel at 8-player flat rate so that's how I play most of my games. I still play other styles occasionally, but I don't expect to win them as often. I'll play when it's a group whose company I enjoy or it's a new map that I want to try out.

If you're joining 3 player games, just don't attack unless u need to and just stay quiet, like a good boy, the other 2 players will start fighting each other and deplete their troops, when the time is right, jump out of hibernation and start kicking butts. In other cases, just try out a few different games and see which type you're best at; each player has his best type of game.

the key imho as suggested before is just finding what you are best at/enjoy... and play lots of that type of game and specialise in it. This could be a single map, large esc games, 1 vs 1's, speed freestyles or whatever you like.
