Highest rank possible with standard sequential

I think that most or all of the players with the highest ranks got there by playing freestyle. I'm just wondering if it's possible to reach Colonel or better by playing only standard sequential games. Have you done it or know of someone who has?

Absolutely. I've been a Colonel a bunch of times, and I know of a lot of others who have reached much higher than me. In fact, there have been conquerors who played almost exclusively standard sequential. I don't think that's possible anymore, but it used to be. The "best" standard sequential players seem to top out around the rank of Brigadier.

No he doesn't. He's a very good player, but has not reached anywhere near what the top standard sequential players have.

Absolutely. I've been a Colonel a bunch of times, and I know of a lot of others who have reached much higher than me. Yep, i agree. I recently managed to stay at colonel for a few weeks.
Managed to get the eagle for a few hours too, but that was mostly luck, what with winning a bunch of 8 player esc games in a short interval.

I think if you played very carefully (i don't) you could maintain brigadier.
Anything higher, well i'd be very impressed if you do it without freestyle or playing only team-games with a very good team.

Not to pick nits, but Mojo plays mostly team games, while the thread title mentions standard, specifically. Also, I think having never played a fs game is too extreme of a stipulation. I doubt you'll find many people at all, who have never played a fs game, let alone the top 20.

Most top players are in clans, and clans usually play several team games ... do we look for the top non clan member?^^

Nope. Plenty of Sequential players amongst the Generals & Brigs, though almost all of them play team games too (some play teams exclusively).

Yes. If you play Sequential Standard Escalating, you can reach & maintain Brig or General, if you are good enough & mostly play private games with similarly ranked players.

If you play Sequential Standard Flate Rate / No Cards, you can reach & maintain Major or Colonel only, I think. That´s because you won´t find many similarly ranked players for private games with these settings anymore.

It doesn't matter how much % of your games was standard, it just matters how you got to your highscore right?

if I would play 4000 sequential standard games and then go to the top in 200 freestyle ones, you shouldn't qualify...

LOD has an amazing Brig who has very few FS games, most of the 24 are from the beginning when it was the only thing available. Sam02 By far one of the best players on the site.

Agreed. But no real contradiction to what I said, I think.

I stopped playing Flat Rate / No Cards Standard around Major level, because I got fed up with it for the very reasons you state (stalemates & build games). And I think, that many other players do the same. But if there were more players sticking with it & continuing to play those settings, the best players could eventually reach higher ranks, because there would be a big enough pool of similarly ranked players to play private games.

With Escalating Singles you face the same problem first at Brig / General level, though by then you are already reduced to play the same 15-30 people over & over again, with a newcomer popping in once in a while. If point inflation continues, you might see a pool of Field Marshals playing Sequential Standard Escalating at one point in the future, but for now I think, you´ll hit a brick-wall around 3500-4000 with these settings.

The bulk of my points is from Singles games. According to Map Rank:

2097 plus from Escalating Singles (1782 Standard).
511 plus from Flat Rate / No Cards Singles (468 Standard).
And a whooping 239 plus from team games ...

I never really played for score & rank though. I grew frustrated with public games at some point (missed turns & deadbeats, bad game-play by unexperienced players, etc.) and started to play private games against higher ranked players. Enjoyed those much more and slowly but steadily climbed in rank.

Always played games against people under my own rank though & until today play an occasional public game too, just to see some new faces. And face the challenge of completely unpredictable moves like the classic going for Australia bonus with a 20+ cash ...

A lot of games doesn't necessarily do it...a lot of games on the SAME MAP or a lot of games WITH SAME TEAM...that would help. But a lot of games on a variety of maps won't help anyone's rank.

Honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as comic boy and some of the others in this thread. I think the fact that I do it from no cards (and continue to do it from no cards) is probably a little unusual - though my researches unearthed medefe, ovo and scholtz as players who win well away from escalating. Dunewarr also has a very bulky record at this discipline and is one I both like to play against and keep a very close eye on when I do.

I think I only won two freestyles and that was a long time ago. However, I always considered that it would be easier to make points playing a 6 man casual freestlye that a sequential - if you are prepared to put the time in...which I am. But I want to do what I can from sequential games.

I think I could get up to about the 2700 - 3,000 from standard sequenial (or 1,700 to 2,000 map rank).

However, I also do play team games and make points from classic trips and 2.1 8 man dubs so I would think that IF I made brig it would probably be about +2500 standard seqential and +500 team sequential.

I would think any player over 3,500 from standard sequential must be considered the very best at that style.
To be frank, 2,000 + is far from easy to achieve (and much more importantly hold).

Woodruff's point about map specialisation holds water. However, in the end I will never play that many maps as I won't start a new one until I have mastered (not just know it but mastered it...big difference) an old one. But I do play various styles (teams and singles) and I think that makes up for it a bit.
