I could write a novel about my feelings on
Martyrs.
A good 30-minutes of the movie are unbearably difficult to watch; so much so that my 20-year old brother who LIVES for modern, graphic horror movies (
Saw,
Hostel, etc...) felt uncomfortable and actually fast-forwarded through it. In my opinion, it was the 'realism' of this specific segment that made it so much more difficult to handle than anything I had seen before.
The beginning of the movie, however, was fantastic. It opens with a great sequence where a child is being stalked by a mysterious (terrifying) creature and the initial underlying psychological aspects are introduced. It progresses to an unrelenting action sequence, followed by a little bit more horror/action, and ends up at the unbearable segment.
Though said segment is incredibly graphic, I, personally, feel it did justice to the overall feeling of hopelessness the movie intends on leaving you with (thank [insert ideological figure here] this movie was made in France or the whole movie would have been graphic violence with no message or intelligent ending). The end of the movie was definitely worth the build-up (for me, at least), though some images of the more graphic scenes will assuredly be permanently ingrained in my memory.
All this being said (I could say tons more, really), I find it incredibly difficult to recommend. I lent it to my cousin, who had the same feelings I do, and my brother who was kind of on the fence (but leaning in my direction). Other than that, I'm unsure I could really find a person who I would feel comfortable recommending it too without a feeling of guilt about what that individual will end up sitting through (and any resulting emotional damage). I most certainly would not watch it with my girlfriend, despite a four year relationship littered with the likes of
Saw,
Inside,
Hostel,
High Tension, etc... that she has actually enjoyed

.
tl;dr version: The French have bigger balls than we thought, at least with regards to cinema.

The Human Centipede: First Sequence, ummm well,
Anyway, first shot, kinda hard not to get any giveaway scenes for this movie
I 100% intend on seeing this movie. It's been discussed a tremendous amount in the festival AND horror scene, and seems at least worth a watch. A few interviews/reviews I've watched/read make it seem like a watchable, decent movie (despite its incredibly grotesque subject matter), so I'll definitely get around to it.
Did you know if
First Sequence is successful enough, Sic intends on creating a second one with a "12 person organism".
