After a short break the CCPL resumes with a vital game for both teams, a win for RSC is needed for them to keep up in the title race where as Thunder Hawks must avoid defeat or else they will fall further into relegation troubles.
Match Report:
The game starts of in dramatic fashion as a chance arises after just 31 seconds. Thunder Hawks take kick off but immediately lose possession, a wayward pass from Denilson goes to Alonso, who sprays a pass wide to Ronaldo who cuts inside and skins Sagna he runs into the box and draws Ferdinand towards him, he then slips the ball across the box for an easy tap in for Bent, who duly delivers and scores the quickest goal in CCPL history. Thunder Hawks 0-1 Red Stick Cajuns.
The early goal seemed to dishearten TH a little and RSC took control of the game, stringing together some nice passes in the midfield. Ronaldo was again instrumental on 20 mins when Red Stick carved open another chance. Ronaldo flew down the left wing and swung a ball into the edge of the box, Bent ran on to it and knocked the ball past Ferdinand, he then tried to curl the ball into the bottom corner but Given dived to his left and made a great save.
For the remainder of the half Red Stick controlled the play but failed to create any openings the creativity seemed to have died and Thunder Hawks were looking more dangerous on the counter attack.
In the second half TH began to play a little better but still the majority of possession was in RSC’s control, despite this TH managed to create their first major chance. A long ball from Ballack was headed on by Viduka, Pederson ran onto it, controlled it and nut-megged Lucas. He came running through on goal with just Reina to beat, he chose to pass it back to Viduka rather than shoot, and the pass was intercepted by Ashley Cole who cleared the ball away. He really should have shot.
Not long after Red Stick came up with a chance of their own. A poor clearance by Sagna fell to Bent who chested the ball down, he spotted a run being made by Lucas and played a pass perfectly weighted in front of him. Lucas ran to the by-line and cut it back across goal, Ronaldo ran in at the back post and headed it towards the back post, Given stretched out a hand and got his fingertips to it, this was just enough to take it past the post.
In the last 25 mins Thunder Hawks started to push forward in search for an equaliser and the chance came to produce one with just 5 minutes remaining. Ballack managed to win a corner off of Clichy in the corner and Ferdinand came up from the back for the corner. The ball was swung in by Denilson And Ferdinand went up against Ronaldo at the front post the ball soared over both to Pederson at the back post who had an easy header to snatch a point, he headed it down into the ground and it bounces into the net! But the referee’s whistle blows for a foul! The replay clearly shows a push by Ferdinand on Ronaldo that stopped him from clearing the ball and RSC walk away with all three points.
Thunder Hawks 0-1 Red Stick Cajuns.
