War Of 1812 Map-- First Draft

Postby SMITH197 on Wed Apr 12, 2006 8:46 pm

Alright...I have the first draft done. Clearly, ALOT more work needs to go into this. Here are the links:

Small- http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/ ... tdraft.jpg

Large- http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/ ... tlarge.gif

First, I need some help with the names. I just kinda put in some uncool standard names in and for a few of the Canadian ones, I had no clue and just used numbers. Please help me with those if you can.

This is my first map and I realize that it sucks ass. Macromedia Freehand was a bitch to learn and I'm sure I'm not even using half the tools I could. I'm not even sure if anyone would want to play this map.

If there is interest though, I'm ready to alter it and make it better, whatever you guys want. I'm very open to suggestions.

Here’s the run down of the map:
Continent, # countries, # border countries, # attack routes, # continents connecting, # forts

Frontier- 5,3,5,3, 2 forts

Central- 12,6,6,4, 1 fort

South- 8,4,4,3, 0 forts

North- 10,4,4,4, 0 forts

East- 5,1,2,2, 0 forts

Mid-Atlantic- 7,4,7,4, 2 forts

Did I forget anything?

Again, questions, comments and suggestions are encouraged!

I see you've got several countries with the symbol for +1 army... am I correct in assuming this is +1 army bonus per round to whoever holds that country?

If that is the case it is more or less like the capital-bonus in World at War, and I might consider creating a few maps myself 8)

Well, in eighteen and fourteen we took a little trip
along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
And we caught the bloody British near the town of New Orleans.

How can a War of 1812 map not contain New Orleans? I'm not overly familiar with all aspects of the war, but do remember that part.

yeah, war of 1812 also was down south at new orleans, and florida..(ind of florida) But one of the treaty's US signed contained getting florida from spain, and new orleans was one of the first british attacks on america in the war of 1812, before US launched it's amazing 3-prongerd attack

Countries that lonely give an extra army?? What a terrible idea!! If a player has luck in the initial spread an get 3 of theses, for example, what to do?

And what a small territory for a map!! Lets play Arkansas map, then... "War of 1812"? No other names for this war? Maybe it could increase the interests a bit.

I also think this map should cover a greater area. My memory is not too good on that war, but is that the time the US tried to invade Canada? If so they went all the way up to Quebec city before dying in a snow storm. So if I'm talking about the right war then there's room for expansion there. Its nice that you have a draft up, but if I were you I'd lose the shading on the countries, it looks nice but after a while it gets confusing and hard to look at, choose more "dull" colors, even if you change them back later, it'll make discussing the balance easier. Other then that keep working on it!

Actually the battle of New Oreleans was the last battle in the war and it actually occured after the Treaty of Ghent was signed officially ending the war.

Good Start

As this is the first attempt at an Historical map, you're really a pioneer at this. That said maybe it would be possible to think a bit outside the box. I had made some crack earlier about burning the White House, and I see now, that not only have you mentioned possibly awarding bonuses for possession of a single territory, but someone else has also mentioned capitols, (which is also an extremely popular varient in RiskII).

Possibly you could work this stuff all in. Maybe give bonus armies for possessing the capitals? I don't know how that would work, maybe you might even have to decide in advance which side you were going to take....? I don't know, there are a lot of possibilities, but when you look at other historical possibilities doesn't make sense that Rome, or Berlin, or London, or any other key city in whatever era you're in should have some extra significance?

Well, not first attempt to a historical map. A guy was doing a Roman Empire map (a much better idea, in my opinion), and abandoned it because some players talked it was alike to Europe map.

A bonus for having all capitals is fine, I was already thinking about this to a fantasy map Im slowly developing...

... These "special bonuses" are an interesting idea, but what's the xml code for that? Might Lack not have to make a few code adjustments himself? I mean, a single territory with a bonus, withing a larger territory would be a component of what?

I think it's been said that a country can be part of more than one continent, so all you would have to do is make the country you want to be a capital part of its own continent with a bonus of 1.

That way if you have that one country you hold a continent with a bonus of 1, it will show "<name> recieves 1 troop for holding <country>". And you can also hold it with all the others and get the bonus from the whole continent, if you get what I mean. :)

That impassable boarder you have there. Just a huge tenant standing in the way, or a spelling error? :D

My family had an impassable boarder stay with us for a month. He wouldn't leave the hallway, so I didn't see my sister for 3 weeks.
