Classic Text Adventure Maps

Postby Jota on Tue May 16, 2006 10:58 pm

Would there be any interest in a map based off of any classic text adventure games? These are the ones where you type in commands like "TAKE LANTERN" or "OPEN SARCOPHAGUS" to interact with the environment, usually solving puzzles or talking to NPCs or discovering new areas as you go along.

Obvious candidates would be Adventure (aka Colossal Cave, the first adventure game -- with "XYZZY" and the nasty dwarf and the wand with a rusty star on the end) or some version of the original Zork games (the games that started Infocom, although the original "Dungeon" version would probably be more appropriate, for legal reasons).

For the appearance of the map, I'm thinking of something using the standard boxes-and-lines art style that Infocom used, not unlike this. "Countries" would be the rooms represented by boxes, and the lines are connections between rooms.

I rememeber when I played some of those old text based games. They were interesting, but I am not sure it'd translate to a fun and playable map (by the way I can't seem to get the link to work, just a little fortune city icon pops up). This idea, though different still in base idea, sounds similar to the "Mall" concept that came around a month or two ago. I think that would have more mass appeal, than the text adventure games.

If that link doesn't work, there's another map of that general type here, although I think the first link is a nicer-looking one. If I did one of these, I'd probably draw it myself.
