Classic With a Lemon Twist

Postby notkin on Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:08 pm

After playing a game of Diplomacy I was thinking that there should be a new map where water is a territory. This would be specifically best for a full world map such as classic or world 2.0 because water is 70% of the globe.

This would make continents a lot harder to keep because you can be attacked from the water and would make the game much more defensive and once a person has a number of bonuses and a set of cards the game is not basically over because they know that they need to fortify all their borders.

The water could be broken up into oceans with the atlantic and pacific broken into north and south. I dont think that the water however should be a bonus because if you hold all the water you will win anyways.

I can see it, but it might be a little to much like classic or world 2.0.

I think with the Classic map and World 2.0, people have got enough maps of the world to choose from. Perhaps a more specific map would be better suited? A battle over the Atlantic Ocean between the Old and the New World?

That would be a really chaotic map...

There has to be some kind of border though. Maybe, (...and this is just off the top of my head)on top of making the oceans worth nothing, you make the oceanic territories really small and populated with neutral guys if that would even be possible with the current random way that maps are populated.

If possible, this could make for interesting gameplay because it would be less worthwhile to camp 12 guys in indonesia to keep anyone from coming through siam if they could just advance through 3 neutral armies in the ocean.

i like the idea of the neutral guys. I was actually thinking of having them empty but could not figure how that would work.

The only reason I chose classic or 2.0 is because they have the most water with out just being water

There is already a High Seas map in production, so that might be repetitive, and maybe a little redundant too. Then again, we do have BeNeLux and Netherlands in final forge, so i'm not exactly sure.

Still, it doesn't sound like that great of an idea to me...

If I understand you, you would only want to make a few Ocean territories (2 Atlantic, 2 Pacific and 1 Indian). When that is the case you will get the situation as in the Alexander's Empire Map, where people just include a few water territories for holding continents (Egypt can only be hold when you have Mediterrenean Sea for example). Not much difference I think.

borders will just be held at the seas instead, whatever map you make, people will always choose to concentrate force at the smallest choke point possible (players with brains anyway) there will be continents with choke points like that.

If their are no choke point and every continent has 5-6 borders, then continents won't be held, the map will become another circus maximus (in my opinion the worst map on CC) who is going to let someone with 3 extra men win?

The board will become a game of luck and attrition, it will be pretty boring tbh... (players will target every country with 1 man on that is accessible to them, which will go on until someone can hold the most land by luck.
