Ancient Mesoamerica

okay, well in that case i just have to redo the entire map since i did not regard time period....how about just a Yucatan peninsula map of the waring Mayans? They were never actually an Empire, just a series of battling City States, with loose dynastic affiliations. Also, they had practically collapsed by the time the Spanish arrive, but I would still like to have some off shore Spanish ships, to make the map a little more interesting.....OR....I would like to do and Montezuma vs. Cortez map, which i think would be real cool as well

okay, so i made the map, have no idea how to load it, it is a GIMP file
can anyone help?

I want to make a map of ancient mexico, guatemala, and belize with all the empires that existed there (disregarding actual time periods of existence) I would have a Mixtec, Aztec, Olmec, Zapotec, Mayan, maybe something with the Western Mexican societies (combining Jalisco and Nayarit) and then Spanish Ships in the Gulf of Mexico with Veracruz being part of the territory. I would probably do an extra army thing for Teotihuacan, probably break up the Mayan Empire into 2 if not 3 separate territories, and then do a Capitol or Monarchical bonus with dynastic lineages of the region (i.e. +1 for a Palenque and Copan occupation for the diplomatic connections or +1 for San Lorenzo and La Venta in the Olmec territory)

I was thinking of just doing a map of Cortez's conquest, but i think it would be more fun to have all the Imperial regions of Mexico included.

So, my question is, what graphic program should I use. I admit I am new to this process, but I have a lot of vacation time coming up and not much else to do...so i'm lookin to fully commit to this

Any help would be much appreciated

this is a good idea for a map, and has been discussed before. It has been on my to-do list and I've even worked out a new bonus structure, but I keep letting myself get distracted with other projects.

Time period is important. The civilizations of mexico did not all exist simultaeously, so you've got some research to do. The biggest cities were in decline (southern mayan cities) or nearly abandoned (Teotihuacan) by the time the spanish arrived/
