Conan the barbarian. new map.

Postby porkenbeans on Sat Oct 31, 2009 5:20 pm

I ran across a cool map, and thought that it would make a wonderful addition to CC's stable.
The author has died some 70 years ago and the copyrights are free domain.
The name Conan and the names of Robert E. Howard's other principal characters are claimed as trademarked by Paradox Entertainment of Stockholm, Sweden, through its US subsidiary Paradox Entertainment Inc. Paradox copyrights stories written by other authors under license from Conan Properties Inc.

However, since Robert E. Howard published his Conan stories at a time when the date of publication was the marker (1923 through 1963), any new owners failed to renew them to maintain the copyrights.[17] The exact status of all of Howard's Conan works are in question.[18]

The Australian site of Project Gutenberg has many Robert E. Howard stories, including several Conan stories.[19] This indicates that, in their opinion, the stories are free from copyright and may be used by anyone, at least under Australian law, which was 50 years from author's death until 2005. Subsequent stories written by other authors are subject to the copyright laws of the relevant time.

In the United Kingdom, 70 years after the death of an author his works fall into the public domain and as such the works of Robert E. Howard have now fallen into the public domain there.

OK, here is my proposition to any established map maker here, that has quenched at least one map. I would like to do the graphics, and turn over all game play development to a veteran. I have whipped up a first draft, and will be very quick to render all updates that you will require.
Please express your interest here, or in a pm. [-o< \:D/

[Moved]

This map has been moved into the Ideas subforum, as it does not meet the criteria for a Working Draft:

Drafting Room Guidelines

To be considered a Working Draft a project must be more than just an idea; a Draft should have a clear thematic focus, a plan for how the gameplay will work, and a basic image which should include:
    1. Territory Labels - temporary names or numbers will suffice, and are always open to change.
    2. Borders/Paths/Impassables - it should be made clear where territories do/do not connect.
    3. Bonus Areas - where combinations/groups of territories will award a bonus, this should be indicated on the map.
    4. Legend - speculative bonus values and explanations of any attack rules or gameplay features.
Draft images should not be larger than 630x600px (small image) or 840x800px (large image).

Old, parchment style meets clean, beveled circles. Yikes. Consistency in graphical theme is arguably the most important aspect of an image…

I thought that the circles were somewhat a requirement ?

Well, no, but that's not my point. I'm saying that your circles are this clean, crips, beveled, solid-colored (etc.) whereas the rest of the map looks authentic from whenever ago.

Well, insted of circles, what would you recommend, for a place to house the armies. Whatever I use it has to be color coded, as I do not want to color the land, and I did not really want to color the text in different colors.

How about miniature scrolls?

I would need to see an example of what you suggest. Whatever I use, it must not take up any more space than the circles. Maybe something like a helmet or shield ?

Well, maybe I'll draw something tomorrow... too busy right now

Scrolls would be ideal, if you place them horizontally, they would easily fit 3-4 numbers (or 3 numbers with colour codes)

Shields could also be good.

I would like to see what you can come up with. It should be more or less a silhouette, as the inside will be filled with army #s.

You don't need army circles, they just make it a little more easy to read the numbers.

I'd recommend getting rid of the drop shadow, removing the stroke, and lowering opacity to 75%

I love the old paper look, the font is very nice as well.

Some things I would like to see:
- Have the regions be different colors rather than just the army circles
- I'd like to see the rivers a bit wider

Looks like a promising map, good luck with it.

Thank you neon,
I do not want to color the land in any way. I will color the text before I do that if I need to. But the rivers are indeed going to be widened.

Oh, The drop shadow is there as this is not a paper map, but a linen stitched to a linen. Paper and the sea are not a very good mix, so many seafarers of long ago actually used this method.

Or maybe it would just be better if I did something like this, and just color the names to reflect he bonus areas.

So yellow gets a +6 with only 2 territories to defend?

Either lower the bonus or add a bridge between Stygia and some red country.

Yeah, I just threw up something very quick, so as to meet the req. for the next stage in the Foundry process. I am sure that all of those game play issues, will be addressed in the future. That is why I have asked ,if there is any veteran CC map maker, that wants to be the Director for this map. If one does not step up soon, I will either do it myself, or ask my director that I am working on on a few other maps with.

Ok, with the scrolls I meant something like this

Although you'd need to make them smaller to fit better. But something along those lines.

I like those icons. Maybe I can use them for just a few extra bonus territs with auto dep. Something to think about, and gauge the feedback on. =D>

I could try to resize them a bit. I can post the icon here then as a png with transparent background...

The width needs to be brought in till its almost square. then I think that it will be good to go. I will just pick large roomy territs to place them in. Probably Lackster, Porkania and Aquilonia.
