OMG man....I thought of this basically exact same idea last night....

It's based upon a 3d Tic-Tac-Toe board game called Cubic. My parents have/had it...and I loved playing it when I was growing up.

I think the ONLY territory bonus, should be if you get 4 in a row. Then you get +4 bonus.

So in 2d, you can get 4 in a row going up, going across, or going diaganol(sp?).

In 3d, you can get it like in 2d, but also vertically, vertically diaganoly, vertically across, or vertically up.

I wrote a "basic" version of it in Visual Basic in highschool....if ya wanna play it to get an idea of the play style let me know.

wow I must have depth perception problems b/c I can't tell what's connecting to what on this thing without going cross-eyed. I think a 3 x 3 would be easier to start with and understand. I think bigger circles with thicker lines on a 3 x 3 would be better.

Anyway, some suggestions... All the lines seem to thin to stand out against that dark background. The maroon lines in the back are too dark and it's hard to follow them across. Maybe a lighter background and more clear colors for thicker lines would help? The yellow and whitish-yellow (?) lines are too hard to differentiate, especially if you're going to make the yellow worth more. I also don't like the shadows on the balls.

version 6 is beautiful, the background works and doesnt conflict with the inherent business of the map.

i can stare at some point on the page (with the map in view) and isolate the different layers easily now lol
