I'll use this post to make clarifications. Goalkeepers are unattackable. Noone, not players or goalkeepers can attack them.

Re: Hurling Gaelic Sport Map- 5/31 UPDATED GRAPHICS

Postby seamusk on Sat May 31, 2008 1:29 pm

I just posted version 1.5 of the map. Based on feedback I changed the top part of the map (the rules section). I changed it entirely to photos and samples pretty much. Feedback on whether or not this is clear enough is helpful.

I also took the poll down. It was my first poll and it came back with roughly 9 in support and 6 not in support. Since the i hate irish people option was a joke I don't even know how to interpret. I'll put up a new poll in a day or two which will provide more useful guidance to me and the decision makers.

Your "turn by turn game play testing" is cluttering up your development and thread, and making it hard to follow. Perhaps taking it to private would be better.

I'm not sure what your banana bunch is with me! I'm just suggesting that it makes hard for users to follow and comment on development while "playing" is going on. Posting the results of such playing would be fine, but "turn by turn posting" seems unnecessary.

I asked for comments on my maps but all you do is whine about what you like. And not just me, everyone who isn't a long time map maker here. It isn't constructive. Thats all.

Perhaps we've gotten off onto the wrong foot. Pop me a PM sometime and we can chat in LIVE Chat.

Or, conversely, if you feel I am not adequately fulfilling my moderation duties, feel free to PM Twill, and let him know.

I'm really skeptical of the latest images. While better then the huge block of text I'm not sure they are public domain, we'd want proof for each one that they aren't copyright.

Also, no map has real world images (save San Francisco) and San Francisco is all real world with risk map drawn over it, the clash of drawing and photos of people here is a bit too much for me.

If I were you, I'd just make the map less tall and cut out all the space taken out of the map by the people pictures. The size restrictions are a guideline. You don't need to make your maps as big as we allow. It's not the size of the map, it's how you use the pixels.

Sorry for the double post. This is along the lines of what I'm suggesting:

I am really hopeful for this as nobody has successfully managed to create a sports map yet. This looks along the lines of what I visualized our first sports map to be, and I apreciate your efforts.

Not sure if you were on my PM but I do have permission for 4 of the 5 but am planning to change most of them anyhow. The question is can you guess which is a picture of me?

Coleman wrote:Also, no map has real world images (save San Francisco) and San Francisco is all real world with risk map drawn over it, the clash of drawing and photos of people here is a bit too much for me.

I'd be interested in what others have to say. They are certainly non-essential. My main reason for the photos was to highlight the game since the game is not well know itself. On one hand I feel this map will have broad appeal because there is strong familiarity with the basic concept of a field and moving the ball up and down and scoring in a goal or through uprights. On the other hurling is unique (which makes it a good theme in my opinion) but isn't commonly known.

Coleman wrote:If I were you, I'd just make the map less tall and cut out all the space taken out of the map by the people pictures.

Flattening the image is certainly workable, especially since I incorporated the arrow images to show what are legal/illegal moves. I'd be interested in what others have to say on that front.

It is looking like we have a workable mechanic here if the test play games are any indication. I'm looking at one modification that will allow the fullbacks (and them only) to bombard their own goal (adds to the strategy especially in two player).

Your comments were constructive here. I've been annoyed (not just on my maps, its worse on others) with some of the lack of constructive input. Plus I think you may be right about removing the photos. Just cannot decide for sure.

EDIT: If I remove the photos I can pull things up and make that text on the bottom clearer. I think I will do that.

6/3 Update. I've updated the map. Removed photos. I tried using samples for instructions on bottom but it sucked. So we have the text on the bottom for now. I Also modified the gameplay officially. The fullback (center back, not corner-backs) can now defend their goal by bombarding it.

*ehem*.......EDIT!!!!!!!

i like this map, and i'm glad you got rid of the photos. the gameplay is very unique, and would be very interesting to play.
however:
the arrows on the instructions are overlapping, and it looks weird. maybe blend them a bit more?
the instructions are good, and definately make things clearer.
a the bottom, i assume you mean "fullbacks" instead of "full forwards"? cuz it makes more sense, and you said so in ur last post:
seamusk wrote:The fullback (center back, not corner-backs) can now defend their goal by bombarding it.

do you get territory bonuses? (4 for 12 terits, 5 for 15, etc.) or is there none? i seem to recall you said before that there were none of those, but there is no mention of it in the legend.
that is all. hope i've been of assistance :D
