whatever it is - we need a classic map. All the other risk style game sites have them. We should as well.

World 1.0

Postby atheistheretic on Wed Dec 03, 2008 2:06 am

Is anyone able to make classic-replacement map that isn't the current ugly as f*ck one, or should I? can I? will it be taken down? etc.

We absolutely NEED to create a halfway point between a sucky map, and copyright infringement.

What about dumbing down world 2.1 for less territories?

There have been many good ideas of alternatives to a classic map in this thread. Is anyone going to try and summarize and suggest some concrete action?

It's already been summarized by the site's owner... there will be no further changes to the classic maps. Until that changes our concrete action will be to continue to make maps that are entirely original.

My questions is: Why?

What difference does it make to the copyright if we have a map of octagons and triangles, and boxes vs a map with some actual theme behind it that looks nice?

You and I don't know exactly what went on regarding this map, so we may never know exactly why. For now we just have to trust that the decisions made by the site owner - however unpopular and however difficult those decisions must have been at the time - were in the best interests of the site, and for whatever reasons are irreversible at least for the time being.

Why not switch the sides that the continents are on? Have the PACIFIC ocean in the middle of the map instead of the ATLANTIC.

What if it were possible to organize a deal with Hasbro that allows the use of their map at this site in return for their ability to publish some of the maps here at the conquerclub? One uses trees and the other circuit boards. If possible some of the artists here could have access to getting published and paid.

It's too bad that conquerclub.com and Hasbro can't come up with some kind of agreement between each other. I've played risk on official sites and they suck! This site is better at providing an efficient and easy to manage game play, has more comprehensive research and development teams that get more maps done, publish more maps and develop a persons game to a much higher degree.

This is one case where you can see that the benefit of fan based design and love for the game has produced more than an any interest in money.

I said weeks ago that if somebody just came up with an entirely new world map idea that by some coincidence happened to have gameplay similar to the old classic map and started working on it quietly without lobbying to make it a classic replacement, it may well get through the Foundry. But as soon as you point out the fact that it's consciously being made to be the same as that other company's map, you've sort of killed the project.

It's like ripping off a Mickey Mouse film and issuing a public statement saying, "well, we're ripping off a Mickey Mouse film, but since we changed his name to Rickey Rat we are hoping that Disney won't even notice."

I couldn't agree with you more.

I think I have an idea... did everyone hear about how Dubai is making man-made private islands, shaped like the world? Here is a google images link for those who don't know what I'm talking about: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=world+archipelago&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

We could make a map of the World Archipelago in Dubai, and have an island for Alaska, island for mexico, western australia, kamchatka, etc.
However, I think we have to change some names of the territories slightly... but not different enough to be weird (like instead of Great Britain, United Kingdom or British Isles, etc)

I don't really know what the limitations and stipulations of the 'copyright infringement' to be, but they do not have the rights for a board of an archipelago in dubai, as far as im concerned, and it will satisfy members because it looks like the world.

And we probably shouldn't call it "classic" as this is not meant to be a replacement of any kind, but will be a standalone map.

I can't go into the details as to why (because I'm not privy to everything that went on a few months ago), but the site is not currently accepting alternate versions of the Classic map. I'd hate to see you spend many hours over many weeks working on this only to be told that it will never see the light of day.

I'd suggest you either shelve the idea until CC policy changes, or alter this map to not reflect the classic gameplay. If the map is good enough to proceed with classic play, it is good enough to be a new map in its own right.

Consider the two current "classic" maps as here to stay until you hear otherwise. The Foundry CAs are not advocating for additional classic maps, nor do we encourage you to begin working on any as we can not guarantee that they will be accepted for play. This is simply a place for discussion.

hey, it seems to me that a lot of people don't like the current classic maps cuz there's no landscape to them, but we can't use the earth's geography. I'd like to suggest a continent and/or land based map that incorporates the same attack routes and territories and bonuses as the world map, but with different names and NOT on a map of the world. This would seem to me to appease the complainers - it wouldn't be abstract or tacky, but would reflect the same classic gameplay and strategies in a land-based environment, but with different continent shapes. Would it be worth my time to do a sketch, or should I just not bother cuz no one's supposed to be thinking about the classic map right now? I just read thru the thread and this seems to be what everyone except a couple people who only want to play risk want. Also I'd like to say that CC is BETTER than the board game cuz there is a variety of maps which forces one to have good strategy, not just know the world.

Thanks for your enthusiasim. Right now, we aren't looking for any more classic-copy maps. Of course maps can be inspired by the general layout and structure, as a number of maps are. If you are interested in making a map, read over some of the guidelines and check out the map ideas and suggestions. :)

TBH I think what I'd like to see most is the classic art having each art type look like what it represents so "Abstract Expressionism" Would look more abstract than the rest
