Basketball Map

Postby rfilm on Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:00 pm

This is my first post to the Map Foundry. I've been a long time Conquer Club player and would like to design and develop a map for this great site.

My concept, which has been attempted in the past, is to create a basketball map. I've read old threads in the Recycle Bin about why the concept may or may not work; however, I can't seem to find an image of the former map attempts. Does anybody have any additional info about this?

Here is my VERY early attempt. I'm adding stands and bleachers now, but before I got too carried away wanted to see why former cartographers abandoned this idea.Image

Thanks!

Hmm... I was prepared for something hideous and complex but you seem to have a decent start. I like the graphical style, but the hoops are in the wrong perspective for the map I think. Do you intend to put players on the floor?

Also, take gander at this as it will probably help you develop your map:

and when you post an image, you're more likely to get replies by posting it with the [bigimg] tags.

Sports maps have never been particularly well received by the foundry at large, which is one of the main reasons that there aren;t any on the site yet! That said, you've made a promising start on the graphics, although you need to put a lot more thought into how the gameplay is going to work...

One of the difficulties of sports maps, is that there isn't a very easy way to convey movement of the ball, because the image has to be fixed, and the nature of the game revolves more about expansion of territory - and while troops can be moved, it's not in the same fluid way that we expect when thinking of sports games.

Just because it's difficult, doesn't mean it's impossible; the key to making this a success is to think carefully about how you're going to represent the gameplay of basketball on a CC map. Once you have a solid idea of what you'd like to achieve, then you can start to think about how to achieve it...

Are bonuses going to be based on scoring hoops? If so, how are you going to make it work for your +2's and +3s?
Are you going to require particular groups of players to represent particualr passing/shooting movements?
etc.
etc.

I have not read any past discussions about basketball maps yet... but perhaps you can incorporate this idea for passing and shooting, which will be most likely needed if this is going to succeed.

For simplistic purposes we will call the left side of the court Side/Team A - and the right side of the court Side/Team B

We will say Team A and Team B have so many territories on both sides of the map (where Team A has more guys on Side B waiting to score and Team B has more guys on Side A waiting to score)

Here is where it gets tricky and if you would like me to draw up a diagram tomorrow just PM me and ill put one up in this thread but I will try to explain it well in words...

Both Teams have players on the court on both sides of the map, all players on the court have the ability to one-way attack a Passing territory for their respected Teams... From the Passing territory, you can attack anyone on that players Team (remember that both teams have a different Passing territory) This sets up the court so that each position that lies on the field has to assault the passing territory in order to attack anyone else on the same team...

Now similar to the passing idea is a Shooting territory. The Shooting territory for Side B can only be attacked from any player on Team A that is in scoring position on Side B and the same for the other Shooting territory for Team B shooting from Side A. Now from this Shooting territory it can only one way attack the Net on the corresponding Side.

Perhaps the Net territory can attack anyone in the Key? or within the 3 point-line? Which would involve the concept of the Rebound and ability to attack Team A if you only had spots on Team B...

Now I personally am not a fan of involving the scoreboard, the bleachers, the fans... But this is your map idea so take it in any direction that you are going to... Another tip to look into is going beyond the generic Basketball set-up... Perhaps become very bold and put 4 or even 6 different Teams on the map and call it ConquerBall (I picture that working well with the mental image of my attack routes drawn out above... in the extra teams case just add more passing and shooting territories)

I am pretty tired, just wrote an exam and have 830 class but definitely PM if you want me to elaborate this thought with a diagram... Also note that I have not looked any of the other attempts at gameplay sorry if this has been done before...
