Skyscraper! initial planning

Postby mibi on Sun Dec 09, 2007 9:56 pm

So I was thinking about the demand for large maps, and about the current size limitations, and what would be the perfect map to act as an exception to limitation and provide some large and long gameplay.

Well here it is.

Skyscraper!

Its 80 floors of towering mayhem, plus 5 sub floors.

Territories: around 700-1000. Although it would be madness to not have starting neutrals so a player doesn't start with 100 deployable armies.

Continents: lots, close to 100 or more, although only the first few floors are currently occupied. The final graphics will have lots of details like chairs and beds and stuff.

movement: Once you attack the elevator shaft on a floor, you can ride the elevator all the way up or down to the elevator shaft on any other floor. Stairs are up or down one floor only. From the elevator or stairs you can attack the doors. Also, there are some walls, although the thin walls designate smaller doors you can pass through, the thicker walls you cannot.

but mibi, this map is so friggin tall, it will never get past the foundry!

true, the tallness is an issue, and on any other map it would be an automatic DENY due to the annoying scrolling, but this map is different. why you may ask? because its a huge skyscraper, that has long elevators. now look around your screen... what do you see that looks kind of like an elevator and shaft. your scroll bars! thats right, scrolling up and down this map is part of the fun! Its just like taking an elevator to the very top! it's like having your own personal elevator control panel on the right of your screen.

so there you have it, the scrolling is no longer an issue, because it is a part of the gameplay, is that genius or what...

and with out further ado...

you are now at the top of the skyscraper, use your personal elevator control panel (scroll bar) to travel to the ground level.

going down...

last floor, everyone off.

I'm not confident that this will ever pass. Although your chances are probably a lot better with height than with width.

The small will need to be 630 wide. I'd advise making sure that's possible instead of waiting for size restrictions on width to lapse or expire.

A skyscraper map would be great, tho. It'll take me back to those days of playing SimTower.

Just don't forget to put the Project Mayhem van in the subbasement.

I am thinking the small map can just be a super condensed version with no text, just showing the positions of all the players. It can even be done in an evacuation map style, just so people a sense of the player layouts with out 'riding up and down the elevators'.

but yeah, not point in getting too far into it, without a green from the powers that be.

AWESOME....DO it I think it would be awesome.... For the higher floors you could have it divided between business and residential Zones.... Maybe even Low income Medium income and high income for the residential.... also maybe add duplexes and penthouse suites...maybe a helipad...and window washers rigs....maybe a service elevator....Water tanks, boiler, power rooms,
Maybe a Bank, or television/radio company...there are a lot of things you can do with this and scrolling is a nice twist on the game since you can;t see the whole board..almost like having fog of war without the fog

I think it would be cool to give it some more architectural design for the top....but i imagine the graphics will evolve anyway

Maybe Add King Kong climbing the side holding a girl or at the top crushing a biplane....That would be Hilarious

If the top floors were starting neutral and everyone started near the bottom, how would you ensure people had a reason to go up the the tower instead of just fighting downstairs?

if every one started at the bottom there would be no reason to go up at all.

what I was thinking was, if there are 700 territories making 72, 96, 120 of them starting territories randomly spaced through out the tower. then the whole tower gets play. all the rest would have 1 neutral army on them

Is the elevator shaft counted as only 1 territory? It seems a bit too easy to me to filter men all the way up or down.... Maybe if it were 20 Floor Sections then you could have each section bordering it nearest 20 floors up and down

for example... elevator 30-40 borders all territories from 10 to 60
Or maybe that is to complicated what do you think?

well the elevators are going to need some discussion for sure. currently, all elevator spaces can attack all other elevator spaces. Each floor has one elevator space. so you can go from floor 2 to 80 if you like.

your elevator idea is good but i was considering this... make a few extra lobbies. one at floor 1 and one at floor 35 and one at floor 65 or something. you can go from floor 1 to the the floor 35 lobby, and then from there to the floor 65 lobby or any floor between floor 35 and 65.

OR

another idea I just thought of is that any elevator space can attack any floor that is 20 floors above or below it. That way you can still get to the top from the lobby, but you need to conquer your way up 4 floors.

im sure there are other options, but those are two i just thought of.

You may want to keep the elevators a Non bonus territ... that way you don't necessarily have to fortify it with lots of men and players can bypass a controlled area,,, You may also want to have an elevator room territ .... basically. you conquer a floor of rooms...then you fort the elevator room and stairwells...
and you can progress through the elevator shaft to move through the building faster than the stairwell which is floor by floor

you can alway s add a service elevator to go a specific direction or to specific floors....You can even make the building partially under construction and add a crane hanging off the side....But i think KONG would be cooler

I just remembered what this reminds me of.............ELEVATOR ACTION..Anyone remember that

right the elevators and stairs will be non bonus. and if you hold the elevator on that floor and the stairs then you effectively wall your self in, although some areas will have stairs in the floors themselves that allow for more vertical movement.

there may be other ways to move around.... Room service can attack all hotel rooms, etc... Security cameras can bombard all stairs.

King kong would be neat.. but pretty hard to draw, but we shall see... i can only make a few floors on fire, as long as its not thought of as a 9/11 reference..

there are 80 floors so there is a lot of room for creativity.

you could have water leaks which caused a the floor of a room to collapse or some other disasters that you would see in a building like that to make more borders
