The Winter War 1939-1940 [idea]

Postby HapSmo19 on Mon May 26, 2008 6:06 pm

Hey all,
Obviously I'm new here but I thought I'd throw this idea out there. I've always found it an interesting subject so here's a snippet and a map I grabbed from the net. Check it out......

"For 105 days, the tiny nation of Finland fought a war that typically merits only a footnote in a history book, or a passing remark in a WWII documentary. Taking on the vast manpower of the Soviet army, the Finns put up a fanatical defense of their homeland, inflicting horrific casualties on the invading Soviet army. In the end, the overwhelming number of Soviet troops and tanks sent into Finland forced the Finns to sue for peace, but they walked away from the conflict with their much bigger neighbor with their independence and national pride intact. Their struggle influenced the landscape and direction of the entire world war that followed, and perhaps the outcome as well.
On the morning of November 30th, 1939, the Soviet Union unleashed its vast military might on its defiant neighbor. Soviet medium bombers attacked the Finnish capital of Helsinki, and immense Soviet resources in men and material surged across the entire length of the border in an attempt to crush the overmatched Finnish military and bring the defiant Finns in line Instead of the rapid Blitzkrieg type victory Stalin’s high command predicted, the ill-prepared and poorly led Soviet Army marched into a frozen, desolate meat-grinder, learning the meaning of “sisu”, a Finnish term that could be roughly translated as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. Instead of fleeing from the vast Soviet onslaught, the Finns fought bravely, using their knowledge of the land, and pulling from their fierce national pride and “sisu” to inflict massive casualties on the invaders, and earning themselves the nickname of The White Death. The Winter War had begun."

Theres a thousand lakes in Finland that would make for great impassables and as the Fins fought a great defensive and ambush war and I was thinking of maybe some kind of extra defensive dice (3 dice) bonus for holding three Finnish positions in a row or something....But I dont wanna get pushy here ;)

My two cents.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea. Can you use an image-editing program? If you don't get some kind of draft, this will be moved to the map ideas thread.

Can you recommend one? One with a help feature preferably.....and free?
I saw a thread here somewhere with alll the tools I'll need I guess but I've never done it before and am lost as to where to even start. If you can explain the process and programs to use I'll get started.
Thanks.

Read this page:

And then this one: scroll down to the "And for image development, many users have sworn by:" section
http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1410

Both are sticky topics at the top of the main foundry.

Actually, I could do all of that for you... but I have a better idea. Your timing is pretty good. We're actually getting around to make a FAQ on the Foundry -- PM TaCkTix with your questions (you can quote this post to explain, if you like), and I'm sure he'll answer your questions. And you'll be helping us out at the same time.

I'd recommend Paint.NET; it's an image editing program that's free to download to your computer and, in my opinion, just as good for mapmaking as the $324632462934867439.00 Photoshop. I used it exclusively for the Fall of Rome map; take a look at that draft if you like.

There's a link to download it on this page:

wow  I swear to ya I didnt know that was here before I posted this. I even did a search for "winter war" and came up with some "winter" and some "war" but not that. I will still learn how to do this in my spare time though. If the mods would like to move this thread, thats ok with me. I'll re-post here when I actually have a draft. Thanks.

hell yeah. less pressure on me. =D>

I think this is a GREAT map idea. One of those events I know nothing about. I kind of have a full slate right now or I'd help with graphics or xml. Probably not up my alley anyway. While I find it really interesting, I don't know that the battle based maps are my cup of tea graphically. looking for more puns... be back later. I am definitely bookmarking and will follow the progress herein.
